miasious, submitted tbe twenty-second annual report of its operations. During the greater portion of the past year the board has employed 1-4 missionaries and evangelists, located the south. Great good has oeen accomplished but owing to the sad condition in which tbe war left the try, tbe board baa labored uader serious disadvantages. Tbe scarcity of nouey everywhere, and the extreme poverty of the churches at many points, have in numerous instances caused a cetwatioa of ministerial labors altogether. The report contains letters from many plan la tbe south revealing an extent of suffering for even tbe bare necessities of lite that in melancholy to contem plate.

One missionary writes: "My field of labor la a very destitute region of country no money. I have in my family a wife, widowed daughter, two little children and myself, and not one if us able to cat the wood and make ua a eood wiuter fire, aad we are now living ou bread alone. All we use, eat. wear or burn, we have to bay. The cruel war killed all my sons and aay son-in-law.

Their widows are on my hands without homes aad rpeans of support." A large number of intelligent and pious missionaries have been employed to preach specially to the freed men of the south. Tbe colored people generally prefer the white missionary to those of their own color, rnis is owing, in no small degree, to the fact that tbe white minister is better qualified to instruct them, and this is what they need, good, sound, theological instruction. Those people are gradually improving, and show evident signs of advancement. They are usually withdrawing from the white churches and organizing churches of their own, and this course is approved by tbe brethren, and promises to increase their efficiency. The missionaries of the board are encouraged in their work among this class of people.

This very able and comprehensive report "In conclusion, the board would express its gratitude to Almighty God, for that measure of success that has crownesl its humble labors In this department of Home Evangelization. The field is vast, its wants are many and pressing. Never in the history of our country was there such a demand for spirital, gospel truth. The only antidote to sin, we must look to its healing properties as tbe panacea for the evils that inflict our moral and spiritual constitution. No better demonstration of the interest in the prosperity of our people can we afford, than in promoting the advancement of this cause, that looks to the establishment of the Kingdom of Christ on earth, and tbe reign of His principles in the hearts of men." Accepted, and referred to committees on home evangelisation, colored instruction, Indian missions, Colisiuin Place Baptist church, New Orleans and financial condition of tbe board, composed of the following brethren Horn? to-day. km lot i. Theater. Thoae who failed to witness Mr. Forrest's "Othello" last night missed one of the most magnificent dramatic treats of their lives.

Nothing was omitted to stamp it one of tbe most consummate renditions ever offered upon the boards. Mr. Forrest looked, acted, wa the loving, trusting, duped, jealous Moor as Shakspeare's genius created him. His freozy, after eing wrought upon by tbe devilish machinations of iago, was something almost too terriDte to contemplate. It was a passion which swayed the audience as a reed, and caused one to momentarily forget that tbe scene upon the stage was not reality.

We have never witnessed so perfect a trayai or tne unman oaseions Barton Hill's Iago was a decided improvement upon his previous efforts and Mr. McDonough was very fair as assio If Mis Lillie had invested her character with greater pathos and aBicsation it would have been more acceptable. Her pronouoatation Is excellent, and that was certainly admired. We are to have Jack ('nth to-night one of tbe characters that mainly contributed to attain for Mr. Forrest his present great eminence.

The theu preeitlent of tbe I'Dited Ktaiee, Abrahsai Lincoln, during tbe war, sut- tereu the agent or this asylum to sell cotton iu New York that bad been contributed by these "rebels." The proceed were invested in supplies for the starving poor. There are now nearly five hundred beneficiaries of the benevolent people who created and endowed this eleemosynary institution. Such has been the unfortunate course of events that they who endowed the hospital at Lauderdale Springs are poorer than wheu savage war wasted their fortunes. Their expenditures have been enormous. Dr.

Teasdale, an eminent divine, and Dr. Buck, a veteran in the service of the church, have toiled indg-fatigably to promote the success of the asylum, which was founded by the exigencies' revolution. They have houses and broad acres, a faultless climate and water of properties as wonderful in medicinal virtues as those of Saratoga. Demands made upon the benevolent exceed their resources. They who have given so much can give uo more.

It has, therefore, been proposed that the Southern asylum, tbe land lottery at least for the present, shall expend its income that may be devoted to benevolent purposes, upon tbe institution at Laude dale Springs. It is objected that tbe Southern asylum is a lottery. True enough. It distributee houses and homes by chance. What has tbe church to do with this fact There are poor women aud children, victims of the desolation and hardships of war.

These unfortunate people must be cared for. If there be those who will invest oaoney in a land lottery, why may they not contribute to the consummation of a purpose in which angels might deign to smile It is not our province to inquire tnto tne morality oi lottery managers. We see tbe best men in the community betting against insurance companies on tbe duration of their own lives. There are others giving more or less for property, the price lessened or increased with reference to tbe chances of triumph or defeat of Brown low. In ttulh, in all trades we "calculate tbe chancts," and life itself is a lottery.

If we recur to the Holy Writ we find this fact recognized. Israelites drew lots for territories assigned to different tribes, and for aught know Lot gave paternity to lotteries. In any event, the suggestion to which we have adverted, that tbe funds of tbe Southern asylum sjiould be used by an institution already perfectly organized, rather than invested iu lands and buildings which can avail nothing till multitudes of women aud children have starved, is one which deserves serious consideration. There must be some mode by which opinions as to the morality of the lottery managers may be reconciled with the necessities of the poor. It is a practical question purely, uot one of morals.

Mubdeb From Mr. Aleck Waddell. clerk of tbe Dan Able, we learu that a murder was perpetrated yesterday morning at Walnut bend. It appears that several fiatboats are lying in the bend, and two of the boatmen, who were intimate friends, fell out about a knife which was thrown overboard by one of them named Wallace. When Wallace threw tbe knife into tbe river, tbe murderer, whose name our informant could not remember, demanded pay for it.

This Wallace refused, when the other picked up a gun, walked ashore and raising his weapon shot Wallace through tbe body. The corpse was brought to this city ou the Dan Able. Both men were from Castle Rock, Illinois. G. Sellars, J.

M. T. Sumner, secretary of the board of domestic and Indian The fact that negroes commit the greater part of tbe burglaries and robberies in this city and vicinity is daily becoming more and more apparent. On Wednesday night, a negro named John MoFwen attempted to force an entrance into the residence of Mrs. J.

B. 8ynnott, on Union avenue, near the State hos- Cital. Mr. Synnott being away from ome, Mrs. Synnott was entirely alone and unprotected.

Between ten and eleven o'clock, she was alarmed by a noise outside, and arose to ascertain the cause. On looking tbrough tbe blinds, she saw a man standing at the fence. He asked in a loud voice if Mr. Jones lived there. Mrs.

Synnott replied that he did not. He then asked some irrelevant questions, when the lady told him to go away and not disturb the inmates. He he didn't rare for who was in thereine knew who lived in the house. He, evidently not frightened, threw two bricks at the house, one 'of them striking the blinds, when he went off only to return in a few moments. In tbe meantime, Mrs.

SyDnott went to an adjoining room and urocured an army revolving pistol. In short time the negro returned, and threw more bricks, when he- got over the fence and mounted tbe porch and commenced battering in the window blinds with bricks. Mrs. Synnott stood to the left of tbe window with her pistol iq 'aud, and finding that the negro was tsVnd to enter the house she fired the negro ran and she saw nothing more of him at tbe time. Mrs.

S. then seated herself near tbe window and waited till daylight for more of the same sort. When it was light enough tosee.she went to the window and saw the negro lying near tbe fence, and supposing him to be dead, she went to the residence of Mr. T. V.

O'Brien, her nearest neighbor, and told him of tbe facts. He, with Mr. Jas. Rose, accompanied Mrs. S.

to her residence and found tbe negro dead, he having been shot through the right breast, tbe ball passing near the region of the heart. A messenger was dispatched for the county coroner, W. B. Cotton, who summoned a jury and held an inquest. After hearing the evidence and examining tbe body, the jury returned the following verdict: "That the deceased came to his death by a pistol shot fired by Mrs.

Julia A. Synnott in self-defense, while deceased was endeavoring to enter ber house in a burglarious manner Tbe negro lived in a sbanty about three hundred yards distant from Mrs. Synnott's bouse. His wife, having been employed for some time as a washerwoman, was fully acquainted with the circumstances of Mrs. Synnott's being alone and the isolated condition of the house, there being no inhabited place within several hundred yards.

Knowing these things he concluded to enter tbe house and commit a robbery, or perhaps a still blacker crime. All honor to Mrs. Synnott Some of our citizens think she should be presented with a gold medal. If more burglars were treated in a similar manner, the rascals would soon quit tbe business or change their base of operations. fit Gigantic Scheme.
