We received yesterday, from New Orleans, a specimen of this new fiber, grown this year, near New Orleans. Words are inadequate to express our admiration of its beauty. It is white as the driven Bnow, almost as fine as silk in texture, and has a brilliancy and glossiness even superior to silk. Mr. Bruckner, who introduced the Bamie into America, has promised to send us some new circulars, containing valuable information, in regard to its culture and preparation, which we will present to our readers at an early day.

The specimen is at our editorial rooms, and we will be happy to show it to any one who feels curious to see it. We call attention of parents to Mr. Ward's first-class Seminary for Young Ladies at Nashville, which, in addition to its former advantages, now controls the complete apparatus of the University I of NwUvllle. A reaction took nlace on Saturday-Uplands in Liver pool advancing to 9d, but Middlings In New York only became nrmer, no hicher.

To-day the former market was advancing at the opening, with Uplands 9JJ. At noon it had gone op another Jd, and closed witnquotations uomiaany unchanged; sales lSjOOO bales. There was but a moderate demand at firm prices this morning in Now York, but holders soon asked higher prices and were very firm at 231c for Middlings. At the closo it was quiet but firm at un changed quotations. We have no stocK to mention, and outside the sale to-day of 1 bale liow Mlddliug it 27ic and 5 bales Good Ordinary to Low Middlings at 25c, there was nothibg done.

It is doubtful whether there is as much more in the city for sale. The First bale is now tue absorbing question. Some of our houses offer a premium to the shipper who sends in the wished for article, and it would not astonisli us to see it claimed before our next weekly Issue goes to press. Sales In Liverpool for tho weeii ending Friday last, 68,000 bales. Stook on hand at that date, 5S1.000 bales, of which were American.

In tho dry goods and boot and shoe markets there has been a very fair share of activity during the week, and prices have been unchanged. There is no abatement from the firmness whlsh characterized last week's market. Staple dry goods suitable fall trade are in demand and country buyers have about concluded that this is the bsst time to replenish thelrstocks, while shoe dealers report an equally good inquiry for fall wear in their line. The market for live stock is very quiet, with good beef cattle scarce and no de mand outside the local market. APPLES The demand was active earlv in the week, but receipts are falling off.

River rising 6 feet in caual cloudy and warm. Memphis, August 11. A heavy raia fell after daylight yesterday morning, which lasted an hour or two. 'Che rest of the day was clear and warm. The river Is falling rapidly, and tho boats at the levee are constrained to put out spars.

From Capt. Crane, of the Belie Memphis, we learn that there Is scant 7 feet and falling, from St. Lcuis to Cairo, quarter-less twain at Phillips' aDd Point Pleasant, and 7 feet at Si, the shoaleet place hence to Cairo. White river is falling, with 4 feet to Davali's Blulf, 1 feet to Augusta. The river is very flat at tho mouth.

The Commercial rubbed at several places coming out. In the Arkansas there is 34 inches to Piue Blulf and 30 inches to Ltttlo Rjck. Arrivals. Steamer Mollie Able, St. Louis.

made her debut as a Memphis packet ls3t evening. She will leave at 5 p.m. to-day for Cairo and ut. Liouis. We have been called upon by Capt.

Crane, the Bella Memphis, in refer- i ence to a letter wuicn appeareu in a co-temporary relative to the officers of the City of Cairo. We knew Capt. Crane too well to think that any act of inhumanity ojuld emanate from him. The party who it was claimed was put olf at Cape Girardeau did not express a wish to come to Memphis, but paid his fare to the Cape, where he alleged ha had friends who would assist him. Capt.

Crane states In reference to Capt. Worman that he did not know that bo was not a cabin passenger until some time after leaving Cairo. That he met him times on. the boat on the boiler deck, in the en- gino room and other places, and when informed that he was on deck he in vited him up stairs, but that Capt. W.

declined. Capt. Crane is well known as ouo of our most liberal river men, and as we said before, an act of discourtesy to a brother boatman Is foreign" to his nature. The "Old Reliable" goes out to-day at 5 p.m. for White'rtver.

Kao connects with the Plain City for Vicksburg and the cars for Little Rqck at De vatl'a BJuil, as well as tho Brooks and Fairy Qaeen for upper White river. Capt. Billy Ash-ford Is master and Charley Smlthers Is clerk. Capt. J.

E. Btreeper has severed his connection with the Southern Hotel, of this city, and goes North. He will return soon, and may go to steamboating again. The Molllo Able passed down yesterday morning, heavily laden. The people of White river will see their new steamer Mayflower next week.

The St. Louis Htpublican of the 8th says: "Jim Dutlf, of the Memphis Avalanche, is very handy with his scissors." It is natural for him to pick up old iron or steal. The towboat J. N. Kellogg passed up and tho Newsboy down yesterday.

The New York, Capt. Stein, with Mr. Richmond In the office, leavea to-day for Cairo and Cincinnati. She makes all way landings, and is in all respects a No. 1 packet.

The Ruth and H. M. 8breve were both due last night. A Cincinnati paper alludes to Mata-moras, Texas, aud to Monterey "across the river." Tbe Continental left New Orleans on Saturday. She will be due here Wednesday night.

The St. Louis Times says: "The Vicksburg packets are doing a fine business and will continue to as long as tbey display such energy in trying to accommodate the shippers and travelers by placing such superior boats and accomplished gentlemen in the trade aa they do now." We say they must not advertise to leave port, however, at a particular hour and get away some hours in advance, thereby preventing shippers from getting their bills of lading signed, aa they have been doing here. The Cairo Democrat local, alluding to snag-boats, says' "Tbey clear the rivers of innumerable dangerous snags, thereby saving valuable boats laden with inland commerce." We wonder if ocean navigation wouldn't be profitable freight, Capt. Stut Neal will place the Richmond in the Memphis and New Orleans trade. She Is now at Cairo, where addi-dltional rooms are being added to her cabin, and her texas is being lengthened, thereby making her the largest passenger carrier afloat.

She has always been a favorite with owing to her safety and speed, and will no doubt continue to be "the chief among ten thousand, and the one altogether lovely." Ssehercard. We havo received a visit from. Mr. Martin Kelly in reference to the, state, ment made in this column, some days ago, reflecting unon him. We are as sured by Mr.

Kelly that so far from being ucuiuu uauu money matters wttn tue jpire uompany (old No. 7), that he has on two occasions received a complimentary note from the company for promptness, and at tho time tbe company was disbanded a fine shot gun was voteu to Dim as a mttrK cl appreciation.
