AFTERNOON EDITION TUESDAY, MAY 10, 1364 EVENING EDITION. A.T LANT GtA TUESDAY EVENQJG. MAY 10. 1864. Till Ml TUATIOrn-MKlKS BBIflHT Rill.

At no time daring the war have cur pro pact been to prom icing as at the present. Unifonn had nninterrup.eJ success baa attended cor li mi tico the opening ot the spring campaign. We canmot now call to mind a single reverse, a.ni the fatttro looks as cheering a the past has been glorious and saoeeasfaL Our dastard foe have been sncoesafnlly Toiled at Charleston, be ha baeu beaten and driven from Florida, while a perfect sbuckirg has bees made of him OS the west side of the Mississippi. Toe victory of Kiaf Smith over Bucks is the most complete asMTbvarw helming of the war, and rb iivo. no ids that Basks wi'l L.

ai.le to arsnme the ot- this summer. From the latest aad bf acooants received, he has lost all his artillery, wagoie. males, -heroes, ordnance and etaaawussary stores, together with about one balf of his army. Besides this, by the Provi dential falling oi the water in Kad river, a large nsstber of Commodore Porter's gunboats and transports have been entrapped above the shallows on that stream, and left without the hope of escape. Of" a truth, such a signal umph has not been vouchsafed to us sines, the comjneacement of hostilities.

We should ably in making this remark, except the victory of Oeneral Price over Steele, hich seems to have been a clean and clear wipe cut. From cur latest accounts Steele has lost not only all his artillery, wagon train and stores, but he has lost his whele army and huceif with it Tbo West is now comparatively free from the enemy, and it will be a lrag time before he wit; again summon courage to advance into the interior. The ceptnre of Plymouth, too, has been or will be cf incalculable advantage to the cy. It opens a new port for the blockade ners, and from our latest accounts, we have already derived great snccor to cur army and cocutry through this source of supply. The iron-ciad ram Albemarle, moreover, which has been let out ot Roanoke river by this triumph, is playing hob with the gunboats of the enemy, and will, in all protabili.y be enabled to police aaGeessfally Albemarle sound, by which the nsher.es of N.r;b are again opened up to as.

But the most gratifying intelligence of all comes to us from the invincible army of Vir giriia (J RANT lias thus far been successfully toltd in bis great "on to Richmond" movement, aed, judging from the equanimity cf our mili tary leaders and Government officials at Rich- m' ed. we need have no fears as to the final am t. They are fully apprised of the Herculean tffjrts now being made by the Yankee Govern meat for the capture of the Confedtirate capi it, and cf course are or will be prepared for tho shock wherever and whenever the onset is made. With all the lights at present before us, wo are forced to the conviction that Graht is bound to foliovun the footsteps of his ous predecessors. He has ccrr.o into the flict with all the1 pomp and vain glory of Pope; may be come out of it with the same chagrin asi humiliation.

As to the Daltsn front, the public hereabouts who know the sitoation and condition of atl irs. have no fears or apprehensions. Hose has already ripened into confidence, and the enemy are already regarded as whipped if he will only ign to give battle, which there seems to be some doubt. Out officers there were never more cocfiJeot ef success, while oar noble and gallant soldiery are eager for the ball to open They were never in higher spirits or better fighting trim, and the country may rest assured that they will do up their work in apple-pie order when they once get at it. Gen.

John stom has an eagle-eye upon the foe, and is pared lor him at every point. From a survey of the whole field, from tbr, Potomac ts the Rio Grande, our skies were never brighter or cur prospects more promising. All, both army and people, feel that cuoceas in the two great contests new at ch- mond and Dalton will pat an end to the war, and with this conviction on the minds of cur soldiers, they will fight as never men fought before. The Yankees no doubt have been per- aaaded by the experience cf the last three years, that our boys know something of fighting, but they have severer lessons yet to leant which will be Uoght them in the campaign now pend ing. They have already bad a foretaste of the fighting propensities of our troops at Plymouth, Fart Pillow, in Fiorida, and on Bad river.

The Gael lessons to be imparted by Gens L.EB and JohRbtok, now being taught. The Fives The action of ogress having settled the value cf the fivee at 0C cents after the first of a disposition prevails on the part of thermal! traders and spectators to let them drop at ccce. While wa think this is wrong, as the June tszes will more than sorb the amount afloat at par, it really seirns endeavor to nUru the current against i the extortioners' raised Withourco temporary of the chmond Itig, we wish we were well lid of tbem altogether, and recorn mend a a means bringing about a consumma tion so devoutly to he wished, that all who have not paid their do so as soon as possible abddai all who buy the new six per cent bonds settle for them in these notes. List or Wouvmrd. We have been unable to obtain a complete list of the wounded who arrived to day, in tirr for ihi afternoon issue, bat have been promised one for the morning Amen? those who were brought down were the following: Lieut.

Cannady and Austin, company UTth Mississippi Sergt. O. H. Del-auee, company A R.Arnett, pany J. W.

Haider, company and Addy, mpaoy 37th Miss; C. W. LessV, BiWelariri'a aharo shooters T. Knight, 17th Alabama; A Y. White, S.h Alabama A.

Toe city has be-an fall of rumors about a fight atRaseea on the Western and Atlantic road since yesterday. Daring the night it became evident that the telegraph line, though rently working fr jat here to Dalton, was being tempered with, and that soma strange operator had hold of it The superintendent of the At lanta office withheld all business until be could get the true signals from oar operators at the other end. About half past nine this morning these were obtained and It became evident that the Una between her and Dalton wa free from the enemy. At 10 o'clock the Kingston train arrived, thirtv-fire of our wounded who had been in the fight at Rsaaca. Those were ed during the middle pnrMon of the day day and was at ones) brought off the field.

They know nothing of what occurred later than terday 4 pm. had the pleasure of an interview with Lieut. Cabtsady, company 37th Mississippi, Car revV bridade. Lieut. C.

is wounded by musket shot in the fleshy part of the left thigh. Prom him we learn that the Bm appeared in fore; aboat four mile wst of Rssaca at 10, a. at yesterdsy. Oar pickets engaged them, gredaauy failing back upon the main force, which consisted of Cahtey'8 brigade. The enemy appeared to have two divisions of fantry, some of them mounted.

Thoyadvanced steadily upon Resaca, when our line gradually fell baek to within half a mile of the village, wbere tbey held tho enemy in check. In the after oo reinforcements begin to ar rive from above and below, anl the result of the battle we know only from the workirg of the telegXsph line, which we have already given. This portion of the enemy evidently came down from the Lafayette road, passing to the left of oar forces, sod had for their object the catting of the line of communication between Gen. Johsstos anl his base of supplies. In this they have been signally defeated.

About 11 in the morning our forces captured sixteen cf ths Yankee adfance pickets, one of whom was a negro. Resaca is a small railroad village, eighty-four miles from Atlanta and eighteen miles from Dalton, where tho railroad crosses the Ojsta- naula river. The bridge at this point, the struction of which the enemy was doubtless aiming to accomplish, Is an important one, and had they succeeded, its loss would have given Gen. Johmtom trouble. HKPOKTANT TO TAX PATsTBs.

The commissioner of taxes, in a late ecrre- pondnce with Messrs. LestW, bell and Aiken, members of Congress from thei Stale, render soma important opinions on the tax question. Hs decide that the five-fold penalty for the non-payment of the tithe tax applies only to the tithe tax of 1864, and cot that of ld53. The penalty for the non-peymant of the tithe tax of 1863 is the assessed value thereof, with 50 per cent, added. The tithe tax on ba- eon payable in tha year 1864, and the time for assessment not.

having arrived before the l'7th February, 1664, the data of the ed tax law, is subject to the five-fold penalty Another point decided is that, in cases where the produce subject to tax in kind has been to ken and receipted for by any qaarUrmaster or commissary serving with troops iu the field, the receipt may be allowed by the collector in set- of the money value of the tax in kind In cues where such produce of the farmer has been taken and receipted. for by any person longing to the army not a quartern or missary, proof mast be made of the 'sets by the tixpeyer to the satisfaction of the collector, and hs ii istisfied that the produce has been re ceived and ased by the Confederate 8 army, the receipt may in like manner be allowed. So, also, in cases where such produce bag been token by the Confederate States and no receipt given, upon satisfactory proof being made, the amount so taken will be allowed. APT EXPLANATION. The only explanation of the geography of the late battlc-ficd and vicinity, we have yet seen, is furnished us by the Charleston Mtreury and a proper understanding of the position ef the roads and fords alluded to in Gen.

Lee's patches, as well as these of the press reporter, is necessary to a comprehension of the exact state r.f affairs on Saturday night "Gennania and y's crossings, on the Rspidan. are on the roads leading from Calpeper to Fredericksburg. Germania is the cTossirg for the plank road, and y's, which is lower down the river, for the old wagon road. These are the roads merly used by the country people in passing from Culpeper to Fredericksburg. When the enemy crossed, be occupied both roads and both fords.

But it seems that, on Saturday evening, our forces turned the right of his line, which was drawn up aioog the plank road, and at right angles to the course of the river. Being thus cut off from the south bank of the river at Ger mania ford, the enemy appears to have with drawn his line of battle to the old wagon road, lower down, at the same time removirg his pontoons from Germania to Ely's ford." Gsn. Stafford, who was wounded in the recent fight in Virginia, is from Loaiaiana. Personal Mayor Monroe, of New Orleans, was in Mobile, on Saturday. He expects te mxko the latter city his home, until able to re turn to New Orleans.

Gen. D. Adams, of New Orleans, was also in Mobile Sunday. Gls Lovkll. The Mobile Tribes of Sun day, has a long and well written artiol in refer ence to tbe crucial conduct oi this officer, in connection with the defense and fall of Nsw Orleans Tbe facts stated are such as have been published in these columns, and completely exonerate Gen.

Let there be a hearty "amen" to her request Cy The following promotions have been made inMcGoiran's brigade, army of Northern Virginia: Mej C. McCreary, Capt W.

P. Shooter, lieutenant-colonel, and Capt. T. Alston, major of tha 1st South Carolina regiment. A 9uoESTieH.

In view of the success that has lately attended our efforts to deter the kee gunboats from entering our waters, by tbe oseof torpedoes, and ot the whelssale dread en- tertsined of these hidden agents by the kees, a Richmond correspondent cf the Mobile Regitttr suggests that we apply the torpedo system to the land as well as to the water not to railroads only, bat to all roads in which the enemy is likely to advance. Apply the system on a grand scale mine a road for a mile in length, or, better still, plant large shells at tervals of fifty or a hundred feet for a mile or more, and blow up a whole brigade of cavalry or an entire division of infantry at a pop. ier said than done, you will sy, for our people ars always traveling over the principal roads Tree, but where there is a will there's a way. and caution would be rcquirtd, but the work could be done. Plant the shells at dead of night, four or five feet under ground, connect them by mines, and explode them ultaneously by electricity.

Tradibu at VtcKJWURO. We are informed by a gentleman from Jackson that able disposition to trade cotton with tbe enemy at Vicksburg, exists among tbe people of that section of tbe State, especially those of the zoo country. This is in General Adams' trict, and tbe practice meets with great tion from lum. A correspondent of the Varum says be exercises all vigilance to prevent It. In several instances he has permitted persona to carry on this illicit traffic, but it was only when it was known to Lim that these persons were between the lines, and suffering for tbe lute ntceisariee of life.

thus became a que tion of humanity. OKIJJA ITJK.T!-. The Lake City (Fla Columbian is informed by several gentleman, who had jast arrived from Jacksonville, that the number of the enemy's forces in Jacksonville is about MOO, a large msjority being negroes. The troops are under the immediate command of Col. Bir- ney, of the 6th United States colored troops, a native of New York, aud a son of the notorious abolitionists by that came.

Genera's Uilmore, Seymour and Hatch were all on board the steamer Maple Leaf at the time she exploded a torpedo in the St. Johns, and barely escaped with their lives. Since the explosion of the above steamer and the Honter, they are not much inclined to ascend tbe St. Joha. There is large number of cases of small-pox and other diseases in Jacksonville, and their troops are likewise upon very small rations.

Isaac F. Wiley, brevet 2d lieutenat of Capt. Reynold's company, 6th Fiends battalion, together with another deserter from Coffee county, who, in conjunction with other deserters and tcries have been committing depredations in Fiorida, ware captured near New Boston, on the Suwan nee river, acd hqcg by a par'y of Confederstc's a few days since. Notwithstanding the severe etorms of rain and wind which were experienced during the two preceding mouths, and which retarded the planting interests to a great tent, the most cheering intelligence comes from the counties east and south of Like City as to the prospects for a large grain crop. Jn the section cf country not cotitignoas to and bor dering upon the enemy's lines, larga quantities of grain have been planted, with a promise of a large and abundant harvest In conscqaence of the backwardness of the crops and the un settled condition of the country, Judge Daw kins has determined to hold no courts within his circuit this spring.

The same may be likewise said of Judge Pjtnam of the eastern, and Judge Kmg of the southern judicial circuit. is QF The firemen of Mobile, are to double duty act as firemen and ilice. Crops in Attala Count, Miss A latter fiom Kosciusko says i To wheat, rye and oat crops are looking well, and if the rains cease their frequent visits, Attala will make another gocd crop of small grain. Ccru has been very backward this spriog, but the last few days of warm weather have tended mo zh to cheer the farmer's heart as to its prospects fp" The Yankee ruffians, trae their brutal instincts, applied the flames to Washington, N. before they evacuated, leaving two-thirds of the town a heap of smouldering ruins. Yabkee Raid The interruptim to graphic communication between Richmond and the South, on Saturday afternoon, was caused by the Yankees. The Columbus Times says Tbey struck tbe railroad at Stony creek, about thirty miles south of Petersburg, destroying the bridge across that stream and catting the graphic wires.

We have no information of tbe strength of the expedition, but presume it will not be allowed to do much further damage. The Florida. The Charlestoa Courier titates that this vessel is now commanded by Captain Manigault Morris, with S. W. Av- orett, 1st lieutenant.

Captain Maffitt, who was relieved on account of sickness, is believed to be on bis way home, and we hope will be spared to hear further reports from the Florida, and her elder sister, Alabama, and others of the sea- roving family of Confederate fiag-bearers. The War on the 8owtk Side. We can get but little from tbe movements of the enemy on the railroad lines outh of Richmond. Be tween that city and Petersburg they seem to have been disappointed, but there are reports of another raid to a point south ot Petersburg. The Augusta ChrtnUU of the 8th says, a vate dispatch received in that city last evening siates that fighting was going on this side of Petersburg, Va.

It appears that a Federal force ma le a raid and homed the railroad bridge over Stone creek. Tbey also cut tbe telegraph wires. We were unable to get further lars in regard to tbe matter. Oeb. Behmmu The Columbus, Georgia, Times learns that the wound received by ral Banning in the late battle in Virginia, is more serious, or severe, than was reported in Saturday's telegram.

A private dispatch from Orange te his family states that he was "severely, but not dangerously wounded in the shoulder; that he was doing wall, and would come home. XW In tbe House of Representatives on last Tuesday, Mr Keehle, cf Tennessee, introduced a resolution of thanks to Major-Gen. N. B. rest and the effiaers sad men under his mand, for their successful campaign in sippi, West Tennessee and Kentucky that hi mat and brilliant achievements entitle him to be placed among the renowned chieftain of the world, which wn adopted.

"Xcfccl Oatk-TaklBS Swiwdlere The Philadelphia Inqwtr says On Saturday afternoon, the 19 instant number of "rebel oath-takers" were at the Cooper Bhcp Volunteer Refreshment saloon Tbey all seemed anxious to cbtain work. It was not to be expected they were ail honest. It may be safely inferred there is always one Judas in every twelve men. It seems, however, that a worthy farmer, Mr. Middleton, of Dela ware county, in agreeing to give work to three of the repentant rebels, happened to select three tie desired to nave one band to work on his farm, but three of the released prisoners prevailed upon him to give them employment.

He paid tueir passage 10 me cc untry, and on tbe following morning, Sunday, they appeared isfied. One of the party, giving tbe name of Wilson W.
