FKIVATK LAND GRANTS. Something about them as Relates to Arizona and New Mexico. Official light begins to dawn upon this subject, which Is of such vital importance io settlers in Arizona and New Mexico We published the general opinion nearly a year ago, that the records of private land claims were incomplete and possibly but few If any grants would ever be confirmed. Whether correct or not, the light now before us does not change hat opinion. Now for some authentic evidence.

February 3, 1873, the Senate of he United States passed a resolution requesting our Secretary of State to ascertain, through our Minister in Mexico, as follows, viz: Department of State, Washington, Dec. 8, 1874. To the President: On the 3J of Febru ary, 1873, the Senate passed a resolution. requesting the Secretary ot stale to ascertain, through the minister of the United States to Mexico, the condition of the rec-ord3 and documents of that government relating to the land now embraced wittiin the Territories ol Arizona and New Mexico, also at what place or places such records and public documents are deposited, and i in whose custody, ana to communicate to me senate such touching the premises as he may have been enabled to obtain; and also what will be the best method, and the expense thereof, of pro curing true and authentic transcripts of such records and public documents. Kespectluiiy submitted, Hamilton Fish.

In pursuance of this resolution, Rufus C. Hopkins, who had been twenty odd years in charge of the Spanish land archives lo California, was appointed by the Interior Department to proceed to the City of Mex ico and make full examination and re port. Without burdening our columns or this article with much necessary official correspondence In the matter, between the several officers in Mexico, wo give this let ter as the first in order right in point General Archives op the Mexico, March 22, 1S73. Citizen minister of foreign affairs, pres ent la ooeuieuca to me instructions you have given nie to inform you what documents relative to Arizona and New Mexi co are found in the archives under my di rection, i nave tne nonor to state mar. bv the practical knowledge of its recoitis pos sessed oy me oiuesi, employees of mis office, we Know that respecting the said Territories, us well as all those which dur- the Spanish government were called interior provinces, there only exist histori cal documents, expressly nnd directly classified as such, and that under otheV classifications there are indirectly found certain scattered data on the subject but, as 1 did not wisn to Dase my leportupon such general knowledge, which might be inexact, I ordered a careful examination of the indices of the records classified as lands, grants, in which some docu ments might be lound relative to landed property, whether in Arizona and New Mexico or in omer portions ot me internal provinces, and nothing was found of that character, which confirms tlie opinion pre viously expressed, ana mat which is gen erally entertained, mai inasmucn as all the territory north zacatecas was judi cially subject to me audiencia or tinada la iara.

it is in the archives of that city, which were saved 1 rom the conflagration or ly that documents may perhaps exist of the character in question. Independence and lioertj, F. P. i)S URQUIDI. The next of value, is this Supreme government of the State of Ja lisco, section of the interior, number 1508.

With yesterday's date, the citizen Juan Rlestra. notary public, in charge of the mortgage-office of this city, communicates to the secretaryship of this government the following In the archives under my charge, ftae suppressed especial land tribunal, there are no tit le-dceds ot grants oi lanus men tioning their location in Arizona and New Mexico but as Arizona Is in the State ol Sonora, and as formerly it was not prona bly known by that name, perhaps some oi the title-deeds ol grants to ue lound in these archives may be of lands within Arizona. For example, there are sonte title- deeds of lands situated in places named Acuacate. Palos, Blanco, Palomar. 1 asa- iera.

Techurl. Potrero, san Juan isau lista de aconete ano in mese tiue-oeeus it is stated that the lands are in the prov inces of Sonora and Sinaloa and it is gen erally in this way that the situation of Ihe lands is referred to in me omer tuie-deeus. Independence nnd liberty, Guadalajara, May 21, 1S74. J. L.

Vallarta, Citizen Minister Foreign Affairs, Mexico. F. G. Riestra, Secretary. And the last we will give is this one Supreme government of the State of Ja lisco, section of number 2D-'i9.

Arpportof the tribunal of justice of the Stale is transcribed, about grants of lands in Arizona and New Mexico. With yesterday's date, the keeper of the archives of this tribunal states the follow ing With the greatest minuteness I have looked for the references which I am asked for relative to grants of lands made in Arizona and New Mexico. I have read all the books with care, and nevertheless, my researches having been useless, and not having found the said data, 1 feel bound to give the present report. I have the honor to communicate it to you, and in answer to your note number dated on the lSth of last May. Independence and liberty, Guadalajara, July 2, 1874.

T. L. Vallarta, Citizen Minister ol Foreign Affairs, Mexico. T. G.

Kiestra, Secretary. December 8, 1874. President Grant transmitted all the correspondence to the Senate. We have given all the really valuable information obtained by the Senate resolution. All concerned may judge It as they please, but to us it looks somewhat as if grant claimants would have difficulty In showing such evidence to our government as will be required to secure a confirmation of their titles, considering that the government authorities of Mexico can find no certain records of them.
