B5 Dick Stout agreed to a life sentence for the woman who killed his wife and shot him in 1990. Dick Stout, forgave his wife's killer By KAY POWELL Nothing tested the kind and forgiving nature of Dick Stout more than the 1990 murder of his invalid wife by her nurse's aide. It was because of Mr. Stout's belief in redemption that he supported allowing the murderer to spend life in prison rather than being sentenced to death. Richard Arnold Stout, 94, of Powder Springs died of heart failure Sunday at Tranquility hospice.

The body was cremated. No service is planned. Wages Sons Funeral Home, Stone Mountain, was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Stout and his wife of 42 years, Violet F.

Stout, had been assisted by Mary Susan Nash of Dallas for two months when he discovered she had forged checks on his account. Earlier, he had given the nurse's aide $350 for her daughter to make a school band trip to Washington and another $500 to keep her mother from being evicted. Even when he discovered the forgery, Mr. Stout made arrangements for the aide to repay the money. When she did not, he called his bank.

The aide shot him in the back and shot him again as he tried to call 911. As Mr. Stout pleaded for mercy, she got gasoline from the garage and set her patient's bedroom on fire, killing Mrs. Stout. Mr.

Stout used his Navy training to pull himself by his arms to safety. He could no longer ride the horses he had retired to his Cobb County ranch to enjoy. He had to get around with a walker, one bullet left near his spine. The nurse's aide pleaded guilty in return for a sentence of life plus 40 years, an agreement Mr. Stout supported.

"Confession of guilt is one of the first steps toward redemption," he told the court at sentencing. While hospitalized in critical condition, Mr. Stout decided to donate his 81-acre ranch to Cobb County as a park in his wife's memory, said Glen Henry of Mableton, his friend of 25 years. He arranged to live out his life on the ranch, which would become a park when he died. Mr.

Stout had enjoyed mending fences and exploring his property on horseback. Despite losing his hearing and eyesight, he took pleasure in the deer, creek and solitude. After the crime, he rebuilt the house, moved I back to the ranch and explored his property by tractor. "This is where I was happiest. This is where I feel closest to my wife," he said in a 1996 interview.

"I had to cure myself." Mr. Stout earmarked the proceeds from an out-of-court settlement with the nurse's aide's employer, American Home Health Care, to endow the park, said his trust manager, Christian Beyers of Woodstock. Mr. Stout also donated the park's development plan prepared by Mayes, Sudderth and Ethridge. Mr.

Stout was a Harvardeducated lawyer who worked for Hollywood movie studios before coming to Sandy Springs after World War II. For 25 years, he was executive director of Georgia Printing Industry Association. He played polo and hunted with Shakerag Hounds. In 1977, he retired to the ranch. As his body failed, his brilliant mind remained alert, said Mr.

Beyers, and his favorite books on tape topics were economics lectures and the great philosophers. "He was always a forgiving man, a good-hearted said Mr. Henry. There are no immediate survivors.
