George K. Burba, who went to Day ton last night: "Deaths may run aa high aa 1,000. Property loea 110.000,000. River four miles wide. Cannot get anywhere near the center of city.

Water up to second story of Philips House. Worst calamity In the country since Galves ton." Fires Lighted Skies and Illuminated Waters During Long Hours of Dismal Hight Dayton. Ohio. March 28 (Via Lebanon. Ohio).

Da ton Is devastated. The dead no one ran even estimate. Beneath the yellow flood that Is seething through the city there are probably several hundred drowned. Throughout the night fires lighted the sky and Illuminated the rushing waters. Fifty thousand people are to day jammed In the upper floors of their homes with no gas, no drinking water, no light, no heat, no food.

John H. Patterson, of the National Cash Register Company, has UO carpenters at work building boats. He himself haa saved a number of lives. Mlamisburg Is under water and there Is no food. Country people are taking supplies to the refugees.

Twelve hundred persons are being lodged and fed In the National Cash Register plant. Scores of automobiles and boats are carrying the marooned to safety at many points, but up to noon to day no boat could venture Into the heart of the city. The water dropped two feet this morning. Not a telephone la in commission. George W.

Burba, representing Gov ernor Cox. and J. II. Patterson, head of the local relief work, agreed at noon that the loss of life would be between BOO and 1,000. Both declared, however, that these estimates were based on conjecture.

The danger from fire seemed to have disappeared at noon. So far as could be learned there were no serious fires burning. The flood still pre sents a barrier that prevents boats from reaching nearer than a mtle from the center of the city. The crest of the flood passed about midnight and the waters have fallen noticeably since then. Few bodies have been recovered.

Relief workers who penetrated a few blocks Into the downtown district believe there has been little loss of life In the business section. Great loss of life is probable along the river in north and west Dayton, where the foreigners refused to obey the warning to leave before the levee broke. Except in few Instances where houses were notably unstable there will be no loss of life in Rlverdale or the south and east sections. Relief committees to day Issued the following statement: "An awful cataatrophe has overtaken Dayton. The centers of Dayton and the residence district from the fair grounds hill to the high ground north of the city are under water.

"Bring potatoes, rice, beans, vegetables, meat and bread and any other edibles that will sustain life. "We have cooking arrangements for several thousand. We are sending trucks to nearby towns, but ask that you haul to us, as far as possible." Fire Breaks Out in Flood District in Hamilton Hamilton. Ohio, March 2. After a night of horror for the marooned flood sufferers there was a ray of hope that the worst was over early to day when the river began falling at the rate of nine Inches an hour.

On all aides can be heard rumors of deaths due to the flood. At least a score of persons are known to have perished and tt was reported that more than a hundred were kilted when a monster reservoir north of the city broke last night. This latter report cannot be venned at the present time. To add to the horref of the situation fire broke out In the flooded district last night. One of the buildings reported to have burned waa the Champion Coated Paper Company's plant.

This plant was the second largest of its kind In the world and was built at a cost of over $5,000,000. From the telephone exchange building many houses can be seen floating down the stream. Occupants could be seen In some of them. Estimates Make Railroad Losses Near $15,000,000 New Tork. March it.

Conservative estimates of the damage to railroad property In the flooded Middle West, plus the lost entailed by the suspension of the traffic, range from $10,000, 000 to $16,000,000 and it Is conceded that these figures may be exceeded by several millions. This was the opln on of railroad men here to day. Never In the history of the United States has there been such a complete tie up of railroad traffic as now exists in Ohio and Indiana. Floods have frequently stopped traffic on Individual railroads In the territory now affected, but In such Instances, train service has been maintained by using the tracks of other railroads. In the present situation, however, although Ohio is covered with a veritable network of tracks, only one road In the State, the Lake Shore in the northern part, was able to run through trains to day, according to reports re ceived at railroad offices here.

At the offices of the Erie Railroad tt was said that It would take at least fifty six hours before service could be re established, and It was estimated that It would be over a month before traffic conditions In the whole flood district would be restored to normal The Erie's tracks between Chicago and Salamanca, N. are out of business, fifteen passenger trains are stalled be tween those two points, all of them fortunately at large towns. mm tliia cJT GLEN WOOD "Elliabeth" writes: "Kindly publish again the prescription for stomach disorders and constipation.
