An estimate, probably not exagerated, puts the loss of the Nationals at 2,000.

The Government troops shot the prisoners as popular indignation against the Yer-sailes Government is terrific. The Nationals threaten to attack Versailles. Bawley, from Washington: The President will accompany the transmission of the San Domingo Commissioners report to Congress next week with a message, in which he says in substance that had the subject received fair treatment when the last treaty was rejected, he would not have asked its furtoer consideration, but believ ing it had not been fairly presented to the country, and the question having become complicated with charges and insinuations foreign to its merits, he desired a full investigation at the hands of Congress, which has been had, with results vindicating tne correctness of his public policy, and disproving charges of improper actiou. lie does not ask for action now, but transmits the report for the information GENTLEMEN'S LIST. He holds his office until January, 1872, or his successor is elected and qualified. Col. Johnson is a Norwegian by birth, but be baa been in this country since his youth, and Wis educated here. At the time the war broke out he was a student in Beloit College, Be threw aside his books and entered the ranks as a private soldier. He served his adopted country with fidelity and eourage, and won, by meritorious services, the rank of Major.

Col. Johnson was Ser-geant-at-Arms of the Assembly last year, and proved himself an excellent officer. At the time of his appointment he was engaged in the manufacturing business in Beloit, we believe. His extensive acquaintance in the State, and knowledge of the wants of immigrants, will be of great service in his new position. His office is to be in Milwaukee.
