With that, he said, the board could be briefed as early as April, and subsequent approval "looks very encouraging." Jones said the Red Cross decided to become Involved because "In talking to other agencies In the community, a need was expressed to us. And as Red Cross, we're also concerned with meeting this need. It's Just a matter of whether we can get the support necessary." The coalition is made up of social service officials concerned that there Is no existing shelter in Greene County. Among the coalition members are Carol Taylor, director of the Greene County Community Action Council; Jack Harding, director of the county's department of human services; and Phil Bass, director of the Red Cross in Greene County. Bass formed the coalition.

Bass pegged the cost of purchasing and renovating a building at $80,000, and said those funds could be available through the United Way of the Dayton area or through some state or federal funding. The coalition Intensified Its efforts In January after Greene County officials were told they would not receive federal funds for emergency food and shelter programs this year because of the county's low unemployment rate. "We're always Interested in meeting emergency needs," Mrs. McDonald said after a Wednesday afternoon meeting in Xenia of Towards an Emergency Housing Program, a coalition studying Greene County's emergency housing situation.

She also pointed out that the Red Cross has an emergency shelter in Dayton that can house 20 families, and Red Cross staff members can lend their expertise to Greene County officials. J. Homer Jones, Red Cross chapter manager, said before the proposal is presented to the board, the agency must know which Greene County organizations will commit local non-contract.
