Committee examines whether background checks go far enough SHAWANO (AP) A Keshena school district was stung when it hired a high school principal who had been arrested in Illinois on the rooftop of a student's home dressed in a black ninja outfit. Now Menominee Indian school officials have a chance to tell state officials how a law requiring background checks before a teacher or principal receives a state license could be improved. The Department of Public Instruction was aware that Mark Fry had a misdemeanor disorderly conduct conviction when it renewed his license in 1995.

Fry revealed the conviction but the DPI did not investigate the details surrounding the case. Fry was removed from his job three months ago after he was banished from the Menominee Indian Reservation by the tribal legisla- school in Baraboo and worked as a driver for Consolidated Freightways for 32 years until his retirement in 1991.
