Cbsokmc and So.n, 5, New London-street. par 5 1 dis. 23 tl refrained from buying abroad the millers, dealers, bakers worked froin hand to mouth, under the impression that after the crops should have been secured they would have plentv of time to come in on favourable terms the fact that the enormous deficiency in the produce of food 2853, had caused every hole and corner in all parts of the world to be swept out, was disregarded when allusion was made to the complete exhaustion of old stocks, the reply almost universally was, Well, what of that we shall soon have plenty of new." The same feeling prevailed in France, Belgium, and Holland, and at the time the harvest had been saved, the new grain had to be commenced upon immediately. Farmers were in a great degree under the impression that governed others they were anxious to be early in the market with their produce, and for some weeks all that could be got ready was hurried foi-ward for sale this added to the depression, and convinced those who had predicted low prices that they had been right in their conclusions.

Meanwhile consumption was going on the granaries, the mills, and the bakers' shops were alike empty it became necessary therefore to purchase and though this was done with caution, it was after a time discovered that even with liberal deliveries from the growers, consumptionkeptpac.e with supply. Shortly the former outstripped the latter, and prices speedily advanced. The rise from the lowest point of depression is, up to the present time, from 15s. to 20s. per qr.

on English, 20s. to 25s. per qr. on foreign wheat, and other articles have risen in proportion. Great as this advance is, it has been brought about solely by the supplies falling short of the quantity needed for actual use speculation has, till within the last eight days, had nothing to do with it.

Latterly, somewhat more" may have been taken by millers and dealers than they have needed immediately, which is a species of speculation; but hitherto there" have, in our opinion, been no large investments in com by capitalists with a view of future profit. The trade may, consequently, be said to be in a sound position, and there certainly does not seem much prospect of an early reaction. Notwithstanding an anxious desire on the part of the farmers to profit by the high rates current, they have not been able to bring forward sufficient to check the rise. Thrashing-machines have been busily engaged in all parts of the kingdom, and we believe that a larger proportion of the new crop has already passed into consumption than is usual at thi6 period of the year. The growers are therefore in funds, and will be under no necessity to hurry forward what they now hold meanwhile, there is little probability of foreign supplies of any importance reaching us.

For some weeks past the exports from this port and Liverpool have actually exceeded the imports and though we may expect that the prices new current may have the effect of checking the shipments to France and" Belgium, and possibility of drawing consignments on a moderate scale from the Baltic, Hambure, still we do not see anv dis Australasia British North Chartered Bank of Chartered Bank of India, Australia, and English, Scottish, ft Australian Chartered- London Chartered Bank of Australia London Joint Stock 69 8 THE BUCKS HERALD and WINDSOR and ETON JOURNAL, Published every FRIDAY EVENING (for Saturday), at the Office, Temple-street, Aylesburv, price circulates in Bucks, Beds, Herts, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, and West Middlesex. Some of the water mills have been enabled to recommence work, but a further fall of rain will be needed to set others going. The arrivals of wheat coastwise into the port of London have been on quite a moderate scale, and the quantity brought forward by rail has been less than last week. The show of samples at Mark-lane was very small, both on Wednesday and Friday the Essex and "Kent stands were almost bare, and the offers from Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, were not by any means numerous.

The smartness of the supplies has prevented extensive transactions, but the business which has been done has been at gradually rising prices the sales made on Wednesday were at rates quite 2s. per qr. above those current in the beginning of the week, and the advance from Mouday to Friday may be fairly estimated at 4s. per qr. A few small lots of foreign wheat have come to hand, but the entire quantity reported up to this (Saturday) evening has amounted to only 6,065 qrs.

The stocks in "warehouse have been greatly reduced, and only a comparatively small quantity of fine wheat is now held at this port. Buyers Lave therefore, of late, been obliged to direct their attention to secondary descriptions, and all sorts have risen materially in value. The sales made on Friday were at terms quite 4s. above those at which purchasers might have secured similar qualities in the beginning of the week. Verv moderate qualities of red Baltic brought 72s.

to and fine over 80s. per qr. A cargo of new Rostock, the first arrival, brought a high price. The arrivals off the coast from ports east of Gibraltar have not been large, and what has come to hand has met with ready takers at full prices. For Egyptian wheat 41s.

up to 46s. per qr. cost, freight, and insurance, has been paid, and a cargo of Roumclia has brought 56s. 6d. per qr.

We have heard of no sales free on board at Baltic ports the exhausted state of the stocks there, and the smallness of the supplies from the growers, having prevented any offers being made at such rates as to lead to business. The millers have had considerable difficulty in making flour fast enough to keep their regular customers supplied'. The metropolitan bakers, afier having held off until thev were absolutely forced to purchase, are now going to the opposite extreme, and seem inclined to buv somewhat freely. In this position of affairs, the millers have deemed it advisable again to raise the price of flour, and on Friday the top quotation was put up to Cds. per sack.

Household, wluch on Monday last was sold at rose 2s. on Wednesday, and was not offered below 58s. per sack on Friday. American flour has become extremely scarce, and of Spanish there is hardly any remaining on the market. The former has been a good deal inquired for, and reallv fine qualities were, on Friday, held at 43s.

to 45s. per brl. Barley of home-growth has come sparintrlv to hand, and though the maltsters and distillers have conducted their operations with great caution, they have failed to check the upward movement in prices. The few small lots which changed hands on Wednesday brought higher terms than those previously current, and the rise on Friday amounted to at least Is. per qr.

Foreign barlev for grinding having been in good request, has sold at very full terms, and towards the close of the week the ordinary sorts of Egyptian were held at 27s. whilst for the best "sorts 28s. to 29s. per qr. was demanded.

To Advertisers the "Banner," therefore, presents a most desirable medium for the publication of their announcements.

The "Banner" supports no political interest, every subject in reference to the State being fully and freely discussed by it on its own merits, and without regard to partv. It gives its warmest encouragement to every movement tending to correct existing abuses, and to promote the social, moral, and religious elevation of the people.
