in il DEATH AY FROM PAGE THREE pect, Peter Deresky, 28, of Russell Queens. Last Thursday, police said, they received a report of a possible hostage situation at 116-13 Liberty Queens. They said they entered the apartment and found Deresky hiding behind a refrigerator with a sawed-off shotgun in his hands. "WHEN WE WENT to collar him, he attempted to fire the shotgun 'at police," said Detective Stanley Olsen. "The gun misfired, and Deresky got away." And, they said, they also discovered Noel Kates' wallet.

Police said that a girlfriend of Deresky then led police to Tarnovska, who then led them to the youth's body. Kates was shot, sources said, allegedly by Deresky. He reportedly fired two bullets into the victim's back. Still missing, in addition to Deresky, IRAN FROM PAGE THREE said thousands of demonstrators marched in Tehran, "calling on the imam (Khomeini) to let them crush the counterrevolutionary forces." Beheshti was a member of the threeman Interim Presidency Council that also included Prime Minister Mohammad Ali Rajai and the speaker of parliament, Hojatolesam Hashemi Rafsanjani. Sources in Tehran told AP that Rajai and Rafsanjani were called out of the party meeting moments before the bomb blast wrecked the headquarters.

GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS issued statements blaming the leftist Mujahedeen Khalq, a group that blends Marxism and Islamic rhetoric, and the Fedayeen Khalq, a Marxist-Leninist group. Khomeini said: "Who are those sitting corners (hiding)? Are they human beings or savage beasts who dare not themselves emerge? They send other people's children to carry out sabotage." This was seen as a reference to Bani-Sadr, who has not been seen in public since Khomeini dismissed him as commander in chief of the armed forces 20 days ago. The Islamic Republican Party issued a statement saying: "America and Israel cannot terrorize the Iranian revolution by assassinating Iran's revolutionary figures. The Iranian revolution shall advance until the hands of America and Zionism are cut off in the region." THE STATEMENT urged all Iranians to remain calm and follow the dictates of Khomeini. BRIDGE FROM PAGE FIVE suspension cables- the ones that hold the bridge up.

Corrosion continues to eat away at the Queensboro Bridge, where outer roadways were shut one year ago when they could no longer bear the daily traffic burden. Now some good news: The city has embarked on a $500 million, 10-year rebuilding job for the four crossings, the newest of which is 72 years old. This race against time will be the most sweeping bridge rebuilding project of any city in the nationassuming the federal budget ax does not wipe it out. State transportation officials, who feared as recently as last year that one or more of the bridges might lose the race with time and be shut down, Unto is Mark Braun, 32, an escapee from a Lehigh County prison in Allentown, police said. "I've never been involved in a more closely kept secret," said one detective, who said some 50 cops from three precincts, the Sutter Ozone Park and Fresh Meadow stationhouses, were all involved in the homicide investigation since the attempted arrest Thursday of Deresky.

Cops said that after Kates was abducted by the three suspects, the car was driven by Tarnovska to Sutter Ave. and Vandalia in the East New York section of Brooklyn, where Kates was marched to his marshland grave. According to police, Kates pleaded, "Please, please, don't kill me." "He was a very nice, straight kid," said a friend of the family, who confirmed that the Kates family has "a lot of bucks and a large estate." Haig on bombing: U.S. not involved Washington (News Bureau) Secretary of State Haig said yesterday that there was "absolutely no American involvement" in the bombing that killed 34 high-ranking officials and 38 other Iranians. He urged other governments not to meddle in the turmoil.

"Let me state categorically that there was absolutely no American involvement in the recent tragic events in Haig told reporters. Demonstrations of mourning were reported in cities throughout Iran, and Hezbollah (Party of God) fanatics, many of them with shaved heads, carried posters of Beheshti as they raced around Tehran on motorcycles. A crowd of 200 assembled at Tehran University. A group of about 7,000 was seen marching through the city center. Shops were closed and there were long lines of black-clad mourners waiting to donate blood at two blood banks, Tehran radio said.

Since Bani-Sadr's dismissal as president, there have been a spate of bomb attacks, and the government has arrested hundreds of Bani-Sadr supporters and executed 62, by official accounts. BEHZAD NABAVI, state minister and government spokesman, told a press conference that the explosion was caused by a 66-pound bomb planted in a school adjacent to party headquarters. Witnesses said the roof of the two-story building collapsed, burying people who were at the party meeting on the ground floor. said yesterday they no longer consider that likely. Even before the 10-year plan goes into full swing, city Highways Commissioner Henry Fulton optimistically noted that he has "the greatest confidence to walk or ride with my wife and children on any bridge in the city of New York." Sunday's Brooklyn Bridge mishap was a dramatic reminder, however, that walking across a bridge is no longer a risk-free proposition.

Akira Aimi, a 32-year-old photographer who moved here from Japan years ago, was hit on the head when two stay cables, which are not essential for structural support, snapped loose and crashed down. Aimi was in critical condition yesterday in St. Vincent's Hospital. BARTLEY-Ernest Dewey. A Native of N.Y.C.
