(INS) About two hundred Methodist ministers and laymen from six Southeastern states formed an organization in Birmingham last week to fight efforts to desegregate their church.

Sidney V. Smyer, Birmingham attorney and lay leader, was elected chairman of the organization. Smyer immediately pledged to work hard toward upholding segregation, in the Methodist Church. Walden has been named treasurer of Wiiberforce University.

The appointment was made by the school's trustees board executive committee which convened here last week. Dr. Walden is currently pastor of the Grant Memorial AME Church in Chicago. He was supported for the position by Bishop D. Ward Nichols of the First Episcopal District who turned over to the new treasurer $8,500 held over from last June.

BISHOP NICHOLS also suggested that the school's budget be cut to confirm with its registration of 200 students. Jane Wright Is Demoted by Board NEW YORK No one at Har lem Hospital was talking last week about the quiet demotion1 of Dr. Jane Wright, daughter "of the late Dr. Louis T. Wright. She had headed the hospital's cancer research foundation since the death of hor noted father two years ago.

At a recent board meeting, it was learned, members voted to relieve Dr. Wright of the supervision and control of the foundation, although allowing her to continue as iiead of research. The action followed close the granting of $61,000 by the U. S. Public Health Service and $10,000 by the Damon Runyon Cancer Fund to the foundation at Harlem Hospital.

The grant also provided for a salary of $9,000 for the top post. Dr. Wright has worked for virtual ly nothing. It was suggested by at least two physicians at the hospital that Dr. Wright's youth and inexperience were factors in the board's belief that she (Continued i Page Col.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark The school desegregation picture In Arkansas is favorable. The state is setting the pace for the reyt of the South and can be easily compared to the border state of West Virginia. Like Tennessee, the State of Arkansas has its liberal and lily white, areas. School desegregation actually is working in the northwestern and central regions of the state, whereas the southern and eastern sections of Arkansas are more like the western part of Tennessee and all UI JMUSBlSSippi. Negroes attending formerly allvhite i schools in the state were able to gain admittance without the aid of lawsuits, but it appears definite that suits must be filed In some sections of Arkansas once the Supreme Court hands down its final decision.

Negroes, by the hundreds, are enrolled in all graduate departments of the University of Ark ansas at Fayetteville and at the University Center and Medical School in Little Rock. They also are doing extension work at three of the smaller tate sup ported colleges Monticello A. and M. at Monticello, Henderson College at Arkadelphia and Arkansas State in Jonesboro. Negroes are admitted to the University System on the graduate and professional level only but, technically, colored girls in the nursing school are doing some undergraduate work there.

THE ROMAN Catholic Church has admitted colored children to some formerly all white parochi al schools in areas where the church has not provided separate schools for Negroes.
