(State Health Officer) With the present day surgical concept of the treatment of appendicitis, it is no longer the threat to human life that it once was. If the public in general were well informed on a few points in the diagnosis and treatment of appendicitis, the threat of this malady might be still further lowered.

There is not, as a rule, any feeling of ill health prior to such an attack. The first knowledge that the person has that all is not well, is a pain in the abdomen which may be either severe or mild. The pain may at first be rather generally spread over the lower abdomen, but soon it becomes localized to the lower right side of the abdomen. There is an accompanying low fever ranging from 99 to 101 degrees. This is the time to see your doctor! If, however, you don't or can't II that the aldermen will caucus the same night and decide upon the mayor's successor.

The State Journal learned today that possibly two or three council members may vote for Starr or some other aspirant but that it is likely that in the caucus Kraege will get the unanimous support of the aldermanic body. Patton, president of the National Farmers union, charged Wednesday that many county agricultural agents have digressed from educational functions and urged that they be restrained from participating in activities of "political pressure groups." Patton, addressing the 28th annual convention of the National County Agricultural Agents said some county agents had neglected their extension service job of supplying agricultural knowledge to all farm people," to participate in political movements by minority groups "violently opposing certain war agencies, labor, and other agencies within the. department of agriculture." In many instances, he said, the American Farm Bureau Federation, "representing a minority of farmers," has dominated county agents and in some cases agents have acted for the federation. Patton said county agents should be ready to introduce advanced technological techniques which will be available after the war and teach those techniques "to all farmers." M. L. Wilson, director of extension for the U.

S. D. told the agents that the success of next year's agricultural program hinges largely on "the practical application of science to the farm." There are, in fact, several reasons.

The chief reason, of course, is the constant struggle of reliable cleaners to become dependable, to play fair with the public, to make themselves indispensable through the excellency of their work. Toward this end the cleaners many years ago established a National Association of Cleaners and Dyers which, in turn, set up a Drycleaning Institute for testing fabrics, improving methods of cleaning, and for doing research work iiito the causes of poor cleaning. The National Association has also interested itself in promoting legislation favorable to the industry and in fighting that harmful to it and its customers. Just recently, for instance, there was introduced into congress a measure which would permit manufacturers to stop labelling materials as to their true content until the war is over. And, besides consumer respresentatives, the only people to appear against the bill were drycleaners who realized how an unfair law such as that which would make it impossible for a consumer to know whether a garment should be or dry-cleaned, would cause millions of dollars of loss to the public.

Another reason drycleaning has been declared- essential to national health is because certain educational institutions, realizing its value, have voluntarily done research on it. At Pennsylvania State College, for instance, Ellen R. Richards and Dr. Pauline Beery Mack, have done an important research on the bactericidal effects of drycleaning and written a bulletin on it, showing that contagious germs in clothing are effectively killed by dry-cleaning. Incidentally, going back to the work of the institute, there is one interior decorator in Madison who never sells a piece of material to a customer without first having it tested by Savidusky for color-fastness and shrinkage.
