PAGE 2, SECTION 2 WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1969 0) tV the project. And you've got to be committed to the task. But I prefer motor racing. And I like driving, and winning, in my own ca best of all. I've been fairly successful at this in the Canadian-American a 1-lenge cup series.

Some people say I've even made it look easy. But don't believe it. The job has taken its toll of my leisure time back in England, where I now live. I see too little of my wife, Pat, and my beautiful daughter, Amanda. But I take pride in being as much of a perfectionist as this sport will ever ailow one to be and, happily, the entire crew at McLaren Cars, shares it with me.

It was rough work, the kind that makes you wish you had a machine that could do the job quicker and easier. I suspect that if I were still a potato digger back in New Zealand I'd be trying to develop an even quicker potato digger. That's the way I am. I VENTURE to say that building a bigger and better potato digger is much the same as building a bigger and better racing car to do either you've got to spend time and money on about him I would deduce that we operate the same way cautiously, conservatively, with a great deal of attention paid to fundamentals.

This is no slap at the great innovators of the sport, Jim Hall being the preeminent example. I'm sure he'll be back to haunt us soon. And he'll do it with a car that will make us all envious. But I wonder if he'll beat us. IN FACT, I'm sure we will be beaten, eventually.

But the team that does beat us will have to be as serious about this thing as we are. And the team will have to have the kind of talented, dedicated people that I have with me. make our cars go faster. IN FACT, we never stop testing. Please don't ask me for specifics, but our Can-Am cars are significantly different now from what they were before the first race at Mosport in June.

We keep adding and subtracting all the time. One of the reasons this has been possible is that we've tried to keep things simple. Our engines are that way to a surprising degree. No one believes us when we list the strictly stock parts in our Can-Am Chevy engines. I'D GUESS you could liken our approach to racing to that of a very successful man in another sport, Vince Lombardi.

From everything I've read programs both large and small, both scientific and rudimentary, with a kind of team spirit that men of all sports know and cherish. Our American-born chief mechanic, Tyler Alexander, was a mainstay in our development of rear-mounted airfoils, for example. We bolted a test model to his Austin-Cooper and drove up and down roads near our shop in Bolnbrook, Bucks, attempting to measure the amount of down-thrust it created. That downward pressure was measured by nothing more sophisticated than a bathroom scale. This provided us with basic data that we used to continue our work on wings just one of many programs we have going at all times to try to 4 bruce McLaren WE'VE undertaken testing UUnl Ar Up V- OSU by 17, Purdue Boss Doesn't Care CHICAGO UP) Purdue, ranked 10th, will be a 17-point underdog at No.
