UW Opera revives Greek drama Music review Wisconsin Mate Journal ril I 1 each other. This one sticks right to the storyline and moves methodically to its climax. The opera, which lasts a short two hours, is presented in two acts, separated by a 15-minute intermission. There is only one set dark hued drapes that surround the stage and fit the dark nature of the story. Costumes are varied a gold gown with an over-one-shoulder figured drape for Iphigenia; a royal red gown for the king; short tunics for the Greek prisoners and equally simple costumes for the priestesses and the soldiers.

The chorus, which in Greek tradition, comments but does not take part in the opera's action wears robes and hoods with half-masks. Karlos Moser conducts this production, half in and half out of the basement orchestra pit, and on Wednesday his orchestra had only minor problems in timing. By Wednesday night, Saturday's performance was close to being sold out. Showcase Friday, February 9, 1979, Section 4, Page 7 By Carmen Eisner Of The State Journal It is a genuine rarity that the University of Wisconsin-Madison Opera has dusted off in "Iphigenia in Tauris" which it is staging this eekend to observe the 100th anniversary of Music Hall where the Opera has been at home for the past decade. Look for a recording of "Iphigenia in Tauris" and you'll be disappointed.

Try to remember when you've heard it, and the nearest you can come and possibly mistake for it is in Aulis," also by Cluck. This nearly forgotten work, which changed the course of French opera in the 18th century, would be worth a hearing for this reason alone. It is a typically Greek story about the wTath of the gods, blood sacrifice, and tormented souls' desire for the release of death. All of the four principal characters have death on their minds. Iphigenia (Ellen Sheetz), a transplanted Greek, now high priestess in the Scythian kingdom in Tauris, would give her life to join her long-lost' brother.

Thoas, king of the Scythians (Teter Halver-son), is seeking a blood sacrifice to save himself from a prediction of death. Orestes (Scott Hunsberger), one of two Greek taken in a shipwreck, thinks of death as a release from the torment of living with blood on his hands; and Py lades (Kevin Janssen), fellow prisoner and life-long friend, argues that he should die in place of Orestes. As nigh priestess Iphigenia must make the choice, and the decision is torture. Even at this late telling, it adds up to a compelling story. This production, which opened Wednesday night and continues tonight through Sunday, has been thoughtfully planned and directed by Ronald Mitchell to fit the small confines of this tiny opera house.

Mitchell, retired member of the L'W-Madison's theater department, has a special feeling for ancient Greek drama. All of the principals developed their roles into believable characters. They performed musically. and with diction uniformly clear, opening night went smoothly and in very understandable fashion. A fine English translation of the French libretto had been prepared by Janice Walter, who also served as costume designer.

Ms. Sheetz, in the title role, was absolutely commanding and the center of interest whenever she was on stage. Hunsberger and Janssen appealed as the Greek prisoners, and Halverson effectively portrayed the frightened king. Priestesses of the temple, frightful masked furies who added to the torment of Orestes because he has killed his mother to avenge his father's murder; groups of Scythian spear carriers and Greek warriors, and the goddess Diana, in whose temple the opera takes place added to the color of the piece. Diana appears just briefly at the opera's end to reveal what will happen when the Music Hall's make-believe curtain goes down.

In comparison with the kind of opera one is accustomed to hearing, this is plain stuff. There are no frills to add thrills to the anas, and the accompanied recitatives, through which the tale is told, reminds one of Handel oratorios. Neither are there several groups on stage all singing gloriously against Happy couple Tired of fad diets, and gaining lost weight back? Our program aims ol permanent change of habits. Your subconscious mind has all the added willpower you need. Safe and effective.
