has installed Madison's first "UHF-KAAR Community Repeater" the ultimate in personal 2-way radio communications! The central repeater antenna is located at the 900 foot level of WMTV's tower and the repeater system is located in the gle cable to carry thousands of conversations between local telephone switching centers, has made it possible for the company to reirove hundreds of line miles of aerial wire in the Madison area. About 280 telephone poles and 58 miles of aerial wire were removed on Highway east to Stoughton. The company is now removing 834 poles and 145 miles of aerial cable near County Highway east of Madison. The utility beefed up its long distance lines significantly in 1970, adding a $582,000 cable from Madison to Baraboo. Over 50 manholes and 30 miles of underground of cable were used in the project.

Long distance circuits via micro-wave were added to routes leading to Oshkosh, West Bend, Racine, Water-to wn, Waukesha, Kenosha, and Milwaukee. Central office facilities were improved with the opening of a high speed switching plant, known as ESS, at the Main Street office. Three additions to the plant will be built by 1975, increasing its telephone handling capacity from 12,000 to 25,000. Costing $2.5 million, the ESS facility will provide such customer services in the near future as speed calling, call forwarding, and three-way calling. Calling volume in Madison increased to 736,000 a day in 1970, a gain of about 25,000 calls a day from the 1969 total.

Madison ranks second only to Milwaukee in both calling volume and total Wisconsin Telephone. o. capped a record year of con-, struction here in 1970 with completion of a modulated switching system which makes push-button dialing, known as Touch-Tone calling, available to most of the firm's customers in Madison. Touch-Tone service, which can place a call about twice as fast as standard telephone sets, became operational cn Jan. 1.

It utilizes a new telephone which 1 a the present rotary dial with a group of 12 push buttons. The new phones emit musical tones, required to transmit a number, when the buttons are depressed. Madison District manager J. P. Scheel said the Touch-Tone control center generates a low melodic hum which replaces the old dial tone buzz on both the dial and new push-button sets.

Scheel said Touch-Tone calling makes possible a wide variety of new services now in the experimental stage. Included are remote banking, remote control of household appliances, and shopping via computer. Total investment in plant and equipment here rose to $67.3 million in 1970, up more than $15 million from the previous year. The company payroll reached $8.5 million for its nearly 1,200 employes in Madison. Now set for limited occupancy by mid-summer, the firm's service center complex on West Washington Avenue accounted for the largest single item in the entire Wisconsin Telephone Co.

An automated switchboard, eliminating the need for operators to manually plug in connections, is planned for the new facility in the future. Long distance rates and calling times will be recorded on magnetic tapes. The setup will cut space requirements by 25 to 50 per cent. Extensive cable installations were needed to meet growth of the telephone population which reached 150,500, an increase of more than 4,000 telephones since December, 1969. More than 140 miles of cable valued at over $1 million was installed in the Madison area in 1970, about 80 per cent being placed underground.

Included were projects on Mineral Point Road, West Wilson, South Hamilton, and South Carroll Streets; and a $31,000 cable job which will serve 275 planned lots in the Wildwood subdivision.
