MR. CLAY'S FATE. It aeemf now to be pretty well understood by the knowing ones, that an intrigue ia on foot, in which Governor Sewaid and that faction of the whiga who procured ihe nomination of John Young as Governor, are laboring to get ri 1 of Mr. Clay, aa the nextcandi date lor the Presidency, and to substitute Jude Mc Leao in his place. Il is well understood that the plan ba been matured, and lliitt a correspondence with Juc'ge McLean been the fruit ol if.

Clay it to be deputed from Ihe chieftainship of the party il pota ble. A corretondent says The report that a whig leader in thii state with the aJvire and content of hit council, Ihe journalists and other who long to hit division ol the party, hit opened a correspondence with Judge McLean, to offer him the vote of the whig party a their next candidate lor ihe Presidency of Ihe Unitrd Stales, baa never been denied. The Tribune, the other day, put forth an article which it intended that its readers hould receive for a denial, but it was in fact no fc'ich ilurg. Il waa not a contradiction of the tubnttince of the report, but only a contradiction of the firm which it was firvt stated. It wat a mere blunter of wordt intended to cover tneaking falsehood, and deliberately lo convey to the minds of its readers nn imprewion utterly contrary lo the f.ict.

"There are whiga Ihia city who are aware of that Correspondence and know it cuntenit, and are exceedingly dissatisfied with the proceeding of Sow ard and hit friends. They will not venture t' tpcak out lett it ahoulJ have an unfavorable effect upon Ihe election held next week. The Sewaid pstty are also keeping ihe proceeding at clusr and secret aa pot Bible. Uulil it wat exposed Ihe other day in the Evening Pott, they thought that nobody knew of it but thrmarlvet, and were q'lite dismayed to Gnd that it had taken air. When the election la over the tiling will be blown, and the Haniea will burst out.

shall then probuhly tee a pretty quarrel. "Mr. Clay certainly haa the power of attaching hit fnendt warmly to his mpport not hit personal acquainttoce merely, but thousands who never heard hit voica nor taw hit lace. Among these are mtny who would put iheir utinort exertion ensure hi election, tnd yield him a (uptxirt which cold and exact a man as Mclean cnuld never re ceive from any quarter. Itut Mr.

Clsy haa some old and tried friends whom he would probably call to cabinet if by any chance he should be elected, and on whom he would beatow the principal offices. But small number of these poats would tail to the lot of the Seward party. With Jude McLean, by interesting themvlves early in procuring his nomination, they might probably be able to nuke more advantageous arrangemeiila." MR. WRIGHT'S FINANCIAL CHARACTER One of the merita of Mr. Wright't character it pecuniary exactness the strict senee of obligation with which, both in private and public life, all his transactions of tint nature have been governed.

This is one ol the suuice of the confidence that ia felt in hi administration, and it ia a legitimate me. So strong is the confidence arising from this cause. that previous to hi last election, two of ihe laigett capitalist in thia country resident in this city, who had known and observed hit condnct as loimer Comptroller of the slate, took a warm interest in bis success, though ct different political school from himself, and contributed liberally to the expeoteiof hit election. Il strongly defends the action ol the Convention, and present a uciinct but clear and impressive statement of the ad vauisze of the new inttrument, and it superiority to auy existing constitution.

The writer, though he enamerate several defect in it, agree with and Hoffman that the constitution about to be submitted to the people i one of the raoet popular and excellent that man haa yet devised llrt points are, 1. That it will secure a more free and fair representation of the pecple, in the making nad in the ad ministration the laws; by reducing, and decentralizing political patronage, by withdrawing Irom the executive and Senate, ibe appointment of nearly all judicial and admimarrative officer, by dividing the tat into emgle Senate and Assembly diBtncr, so that ibe dtlegaie brought nearer and made more directly responsible to hi constituency by placing restrictions the ufe of stale power and credit for private purpose. 2 Tbt new constitution will diminish local and special legislation because no bill can pass without assent of a majority of both houses, because no private or local bill can embrace more than one ub jec', to be expressed in the title, because corporations can only be formed nnder general law, because bank charters cannot be created, and because the credit of the state cannot be given or lent to auy individual or association. 8 The financial credit ot the state will be effectually and permanently secured. 4 It will also secure the citizen a more ample freedom of opinion aad pursuit, and greater purity and fairness in the enjoyment of the elective franchise.

The pointtareilluitrated at length by the writer, aad we should likt, to enable our resdert to form an impartial judgment of the new constitution, lo lay this argument before them but our limits compel us to confine our extract to what ia said of the judiciary which is the part of the inttrument most ob jeclej lo. The writer says i The proposed constitution must inevitably secure a more speedy, pure, and economical administration ol juatice, for the following, among many other ren aouti 1 It provides for an entire separation of the iiirli. cial (rem the legislative power, so that the people of i i or may nave no apprenention lor the tuture ol beholding iheir Senate engaged in the passage of aiiRoosiilutional laws, and then convening itaell into a Court ol triors, to establish Unconstitutionality ot such laws by solemn adjudication aa a Court of Final Appeal. It makes the judges of all the courts elective by the people, and for a irrm in no case exceeding eight years securing thereby in the incumbent accounta bilny to his cousliiuenna to ihe people, judges with out reference to the partisan schemes and policy ol a central appointing power, and also nn opportunity lo be rid ot an objectionable officer, without waiting lor his superannuation. For reasons which we have slated on a previous occasion, we believe this change will bnug lo the bench a higher average of merit than ine bench has been, or is likely to be, illustrated by, under Ihe appointing tyttem.

we sincerely regret teat the state judges should have been made elective from judicial districts, rath i uinu uv xenerai ncrtei irom me whole ite it cl ar departure from the principle upon which the octriue vf popular elccliona ia founded and will ndtr the exeinolitiration ti the elettv nrinir.u applied to the ludiciarv. less triumnhanilv sucm lul than its friends could have wished. Another experiment waa tried with these camels IB our water yesterday, on which occasion a vessel of the largest class was taken over a bar which she could not poestbly hsve passed in any olhef manner. The more we examine the merits ol this new invention, the more are we impressed with the advantages which will be denved from its general introduction into our Navy. The inventor has followed the sea from his boyhood, and the dangers to which he has been exposed, for the want of an "instrument of this kind, together with the existing necessities this particular of our naval force in the Mexican waters, first gave him the ides, of na India Ruhhr n.ml. and it is gratifying to know that the best judges have pronounced it an invaluable invention.

For the Evening Fo.it. Tua Tract Society: Managers Mr. Editor, I have, day after day, made visits to the premises of Gould Co. to know whether or not the Roman wall was yet demolished. I have said that it must come down, if the gentlemen who rule the sanies of this society would maintain the character of Christians or gentlemen, and I am of the same opinion still.

Public opinion in ihis country is om nipotent it is oftentimes, in the belief of those who profess Christian morals, wrong, but in ihis case they are rignt. it is useless, perhaps, io argue on Christian principles wiih men who. tor one whole month, have slept upon the perpetration of a3 great an outrage as ever disgraced heathen. If law is on their aide, thev know or ought to know that it is in direct contraven tion ot the law at laid dswu by the Gospel they know that those who are only leeallv honest may. in ihe view of Gospel truth.be condemned as the worst ot men.

Chancellor Livingston, whom some ol us are old enough to have k. own. used to sav. very pleasantly, but with much point, 1 tell you, gentlemen, ihnse who constantly walk on ihe line of the law ought to hang by that law it is the duty of a gooa man to walk insiae oi ll. But to be serious Mr.

Editor. I believe that the managers of the Tract Society, if they were paid by Ihe enemies of Christian morsls to do their work in place of what they profefs to be their object, would not be blamed for lack of attention to their interests. I knew a man once who, il he bad been a member of the Tract Society, would have said My friends take down that wall don talk about it demolish It al once for I believe in the doiirine of retributive justice, and it the wall is not removed, I fear that the house will not stand Ihe managers of the Tract Society will not fail to identify the gentleman to whom I refer and if thry do, they cannot but respect the expression ot honest Christian indignation which 1 would attribute to him. M. Mason. For Ihe Evening Post. Geikral Bitxeb 1 have read wilh surprise, and some decree of indignation, the attack which have appeared in manv whig papers upon the reputation of Major Oeneral wm U. iiutirr, in connection wun the desperate assault of the division under bis com maud, upon the foriiflcaiioRc of Monterey.

Most of these attacks evidently proceed trom the very vulgar motive ol partizm malignity. In politics Gen. Butler is uot only a democrat, but belongs to that school of vigorous thinkers and determined actors, known in the parlance of the day as "barn have been told thai he rarned the honor of Ihis designation in the war of 1812, by conducting a gallant coup dt main upon barn irom which a party or the enemy were nourng a destructive fire upon the American troops, and by burning the building after the former were dislodged Irom i shelter, do not vouco tor the inuh of the anecdote, but it may serve to show ntion what grounds his character for courage has been lirretnlore supposed to have rested. Ihe charge has been brought against him that he acted the part of a rowdy bullying champion of his party while in Con grrs. This SHeeriinn is iust the reverse oi the truth.

His conduct in that body was remarkable for mode ratio i and unobtrusive propriety. Indeed, those who were impartial witnesses of the proceedings ol Ihe congress ot which he was a member, thought his de portnient rather marked by the tuaviter in modo than the fjrtittr in re. It any exception can be iustlv taken to bis conduct in the storming ol Monterey, il is that his judgment wim overcome by hit impetuous courage, nnd that be led his men into unnecessary danger. Such, at least, a the conclusion that I draw from all the accounts that have yet reached Hi from the camp. G.
