1 0 Part IllFriday, December 7, 1984 J' Cob Anfletes games BACKS NFL Office Throws Dickerson for an 11-Yard Gain Eric Dickerson gained 11 more yards without even carrying the ball Thursday. The National Football League announced that he had been mistakenly charged with an 11 -yard loss on a mishandled pitchout near the end of the half at New Orleans Oct 14. His statistics for that game showed 21 carries for 164 yards. They have been adjusted to 20 for 175, leaving him with 1,792 yards, 211 short of O.J. Simpson's single-season record of 2,003.

Dickerson, told of the correction when he walked off the practice field, said: "I think that's nice. I didn't think I should have been charged with it, either." The error by the Saints' scoring crew was discovered in a film audit of Dickerson's plays by Seymour Siwoff of the Elias Sports Bureau, official NFL statisticians. "Him and me are gonna become buddies," Dickerson said. -RICH ROBERTS Spanos Denies Staff Changes By CHRIS COBBS, Times Staff Writer SAN DIEGO Charger owner Alex Spanos reacted with unusual vigor Thursday to a report in a national magazine that he plans to oust General Manager Johnny Sanders and assistant general manager Tank Younger. "It's absolutely ridiculous," Spanos said in denying an item in the current issue of Sports Illustrated that he apparently intends to sack Sanders and Younger and bring in either Bobby Beathard or Don Klosterman.

"There is no truth to it," Spanos said. 'For the last time. rumors are driving me crazy. I don't understand where these rumors come from. I guess they are part of the business." Spanos reiterated a position he took a month ago, that he plans to retain his front office staff and wants them to feel secure and comfortable in their jobs.

Spanos last month denied a report that he planned to bring in George Allen in a prominent role. He also gave a vote of confidence to Coach Don Coryell Beathard, general manager of the Washington Redskins, said he had not talked with Spanos about a job. The magazine said Beathard has two years remaining on his Washington contract. Klosterman, general manager of the Los Angeles Express, was not available for comment. Spanos, taking pains to try to kill the reports of a front office shake up, concluded by saying, 'I don't want to make any changes.

Absolutely none. We're going to stick together and put together a ballclub." the record to Dickerson. "I'm pretty sure the guy's gonna get it," he said. "I've accepted the fact the record's gonna go. After the Tampa game, I said, 'Oh, Eric's gonna get "So I found myself in one area cheering for him not to get the record, just cheering for him because I like him as a runner.

"You find yourself in kind of a weird position. It's your record he's getting, but I am looking at a guy who I truly feel is as good as you can get as a runner, and he's chasing my record, so I get a certain good feeling about that." Continued from Page 1 Irvine. "It was a big thrill just to meet him." Simpson said: "We had a good time, a fun day. Ahmad and he and I had a good time teasing each other because I'm a fan of his. I was a fan of his from the first time I saw him run the football.

"He's a good guy. You could feel he was by his comments in the past, and that certainly makes it (the prospect of losing the record) a lot easier. I respect the way he plays. His style of ball is my style of ball." Simpson, who set the record in 14 games, doesn't resent that Dicker-son has 16 games to break it "I knew the one thing I'd be remembered for is that I was the first guy to go over it," he said. "I truly and honestly believe that before Eric's career is over there'll be a season he'll go over 2,000 yards in 14 games.

He has the ability to do that. "I don't need to toot my own horn. I think my records and my career speak for themselves." Simpson's attitude contrasts with Jim Brown's when Franco Harris was threatening Brown's career rushing record largely on longevity. "I can understand to some extent what Jim Brown was saying," Simpson said. "I didn't agree with how he did it.

Franco had a great career and Jim sort' of made it tough on him. "But I can understand in a sense what Jim was feeling at the time. I must admit I have a lot of respect for John Riggins (of the Washington Redskins) as a player, but I had a little funny feeling last year when he went over my touchdown record." Most of Riggins' 24 touchdowns were on short-yardage plays. "I would have liked to have seen John do it on the long runs," Simpson said. "I'm a football fan, and I'm a big fan of runners, and I wish every week we could have a Billy Sims, a Marcus Allen, an Eric Dickerson on Monday night football, because I'm going to enjoy myself if we do.

And I don't tune in to watch those guys get stopped. The thrill for me in LAKERS and I'd taken care of the whole area. "I could have done an interview with every single writer and sportscaster in Buffalo and that would have been about eight interviews. In his case, being in L.A., he's got every little paper and every radio station and every television station wanting to do a standup or two-minute (interview) with him. It's that much more added pressure.

"Also, in Buffalo during my last two weeks of the season it was snowing, so if you went out you didn't see anybody. Here, every time he goes out, people are talking to him. In Buffalo, you'd go downtown to get a hamburger and there might be three other people who braved the weather." Simpson sees similarities between the '84 Rams and the '73 Bills. The Rams have been accused of emphasizing the run to the point of being one-dimensional, but they are nothing compared to those Bills, who ran for 3,088 yards and passed for only 997. After 14 games, the Rams have 2,392 yards rushing, 1,795 passing.

"We had a young team an offensive line with two rookies, Joe DeLamielleure and Paul Seymour. McKenzie was in his second year," Simpson said. "We had a rookie quarterback (Joe Ferguson). So there's a similarity there in that the Rams have a young quarterback (Jeff Kemp) and they're trying to protect him. "And with the two-back offense, our fullbacks ran for some good yardage, too, that year Larry Watkins and Jim Braxton." Simpson is resigned to yielding watching football is to watch these guys do their things." Dickerson said that when he was growing up in Sealy, he used to feel the same way watching Simpson play on TV.

"When he didn't have a big day, I was disappointed," Dickerson said. It seems that Simpson has been doing as many interviews as Dickerson in recent days. Simpson said: "We talked about it and I said, 'The biggest problem you will have will be the press right now. It's virtually impossible to walk into a game prepared when all week long they've been talking about the record, and every time you carry the ball you're wondering how many yards you got' "I told him, 'If I was you, I'd cut it off this week. Get your head into the Dickerson decided two days ago to cut off interviews until after the season.

"It would be great if I get (the record), to look in the record book and see your name (with) 2,000 yards," he has said. "But I'm so tired of hearing about it. I'm sick of hearing about it." A writer from Sports Illustrated told him Wednesday that the story might make the cover if Dickerson would agree to do it. "That's OK." Dickerson said politely. "I don't want to be on the cover yet." It wasn't as bad for Simpson.

"The last couple weeks of the season it got sort of tough with the media," Simpson said. "But being in Buffalo, as I told Eric, I had a distinct advantage over him. I was able to get on a speaker-phone to all the L.A. and New York writers last two years. Kareem is not.

"In that case, he almost had an obligation to himself to play." Abdul-Jabbar agreed Wednesday to a $2-million contract to play a 17th NBA season. Tom Collins, Abdul-Jabbar's agent, said it would probably be signed within 10 days. Commissioner David Stern, who watched the Lakers play the Nets Wednesday night at the Meadow-lands, said he was overjoyed that Abdul-Jabbar would return for at least one more season with the Lakers. "He's a tremendous influence on the league and it's clear to everyone who watches the game that he still enjoys playing," Stern said. "Plus, he's been a great leader and a very consistent one at that." Cerritos Wins, 70-60 SAN DIEGO Guard Joe Yezbak scored 16 points and center Brian Coleman added 15 and had 6 rebounds to lead Cerritos College to a 70-60 win over San Diego Mesa College in the Grossmont Junior College Invitational on Thursday at Grossmont College.

Cerritos jumped out to a 17-5 lead and Mesa never threatened. Forward Russell Heake added 14 points for Cerritos. Shawn Hicks had 22 points and 8 rebounds, and Elroy Moses added 10 points and 8 rebounds for Mesa. In other tournament action, Camp Pendleton beat Southwestern College, 71-49. Continued from Page 3 right now." Erving is not offering much in the way of clues.

"I'm just living one day at a time, which is what you should do, too," he said. The only thing Erving is sure of. is that when he steps on the court at the Spectrum tonight, he won't be seeing Abdul-Jabbar there for the last time. "I expect him to perform," Erving said. "When a' guy's out there, you're not expecting someone operating on borrowed time.
