QUALITY OFTHE SCHOOL BOOKS THE MAIN POINT MAXIMUM PRICES NAMED IN THE I BIDS. REVISION UNDER EXPERTS When the State. Board of Education meets next month to award the contracts for furnishing school books. It will be compelled to consider as the most important part of the competitive bidding the quality of the books, for the eighteen book companies that submitted bids on the readers, arithmetics and geographies named the maximum prices allowed by law, fatate Superintendent Cotton says good books can not be prepared at lower figures. The maximum price which the law allows for a primer Is 10 cents; for a first reader, 10 cents; for a second reader, IS cents; for "a third reader, 25 cents; for a fourth 33 cents, and for a nfth reader, 40 cents.

The introductory arithmetic, the law says, shall not cost more than 35 rents, and the higher arithmetic more than 40 cents. The maximum price for tie Introductory geography is 30 cents, i and the advanced book 75 cents. The maximum price "tor the series of eight copy books is 5 cents. The maximum price for the copy books was not so generally adhered to as was that for the text books, soma of the companies bidding as iow as cents. In former years.

Superintendent Cotton said, it was difficult to get the nroDer amount of competition, the low rate es tablished by the Indiana law maklna: It almost Impossible to prepare a book according, to the demands of the Indiana Board of Education. Several Books Revised. v. Whit taker, superintendent of the Indiana Reformatory, who has proposed that the printing of the achoolbooks be done at the Indiana Keformatory. i i TEST OF ILLUMINATING GAS May be Part of Plan to Obtain Cheaper Rate for Fuel.

City Engineer Jeup will probably report to Mayor Iloltzman in the near future the results of the tests of artl ficial Illuminating gas that have been conducted In his laboratory by Walter Buehler for several weeks. Great secrecy has been maintained with regard to these tests. The administration is interested In getting a cheaper rate on artificial gas for fuel purposes from the Indianapolis Gas Company. At present the charge is 90 cents a thousand feet, the same as Illuminating Mayor Holtzman says that he thinks it is not unreasonable to expect that such an arrangement can be made. The company is using natural gas mains for carrying artificial gas and is selling illuminating gas for fuel iurpofe3T These are both In excess or the rrancnise held by the Indianapolis Gas Company.

Evidence is being gathered and the ad ministration is formulating Its case to make it as strong as possible. The results of the engineer's tests will probably be a part of the case that the city is making against the gas company. Representatives of the Epworth. League of Indiana conferred with the Indiana world's fair, commissioners yesterday afternoon In regard to a request that a part of the Indiana building be given to the league to use as a restroom' for the young people of Indiana during the fair.

It was the intention of the league, if the' application had been granted, so to arrange the room that there would be a religious atmosphere the Indiana building. It was planned to hold religious services dally. The commissioners, while admitting the benefit of such a concession, werenot disposed to assign a place to the league on the ground that the Indiana building was for the whole body of Indiana people and that no particular set of persons should receive any preference. The commissioners will, however, further consider the matter. One of the most interesting features of the Indiana exhibits will be a palace of coal built after the mediaeval style.
