Ross Mallaber, Monttreal. Manitoba Teachers Rap Training Plan Opposition to a proposed teacher. training scheme was expressed in a telegram Friday to the Ontaric royal commission on education by the Manitoba Teacher's Society. Suggestion of the Ontario commission to take students from Grade 11 level if necessary to fit them for teaching, providing loans and shortening training, was termed a "make-shift" program. "Standards must be maintained for the sake of our future citizens.

If salaries, working and living conditions were adequate, there would be no shortage of teachers anywhere in Canada" was their retort. The local teacher's organization suggested "militant action" by teachers and interested organizations across Canada against emergency training. The commission has forecast a shortage of 8,000 teachers in Ontario alone during the next 10 years. Mr. Justice J.

Polish Patriots Honor Chopin in Sunday Recital Polish patriots, comprising members of the Society of Polish (Stowarzyszenie Polskich) Kombatantow) paid home to the great Polish composer, Frederic, Chopin by presenting an entire recital of Chopin's compositions Sunday evening.

Despite heavy snow and blizzard, St. John Cantius hall, Arlington and Mountain was almost filled to capacity for the event. The program was given in an a appropriately intimate setting, representative of a music room in a Polish home, with paintings of the composer and of his birth place placed over the fire-place. In this atmospheric setting, Mrs. R.

Janicki acted as commentator. Seated on the stage, she read a script, revealing details of the life and works of the composer, while young pianists and violinists moved on and off the stage, interrupting the narrative to illustrate in performance varied phases of Chopin's career. In a few introductory remarks, Mr. Synowiecki, former Polish consul in Winnipeg, paid tribute to the of Chopin. are not only paying tribute to the memory of a great artist a great Polish patriot," he declared.

"In spite of the fact that Chopin lived for 8 great many years in France, he never forgot his homeland and all his works are indicative of his native soil. On this day, as throughout the world this year, Polish patriots are celebrating the 100th anniversary of his death." The musical program was opened by Henrietta Gura, year -old pianist, who showed great promise in her sensitive performance of the Waltz in A flat. Helen Borowski played three mazurkas, showing fine sense of rhythm especially in her playing of the Op. 68, No. 3 study.

Frances Kagan played the Waltz, Op. 69, No. 2, two preludes and the Nocturne Op. 37, No. 2.

Best performances were given by Alina Drinski, young D.P., whose playing of the Revolutionary Etude and Fantasie Impromptu won unusual acclaim and she was the recipient of a lovely floral tribute. Another sensitive performance was that of Rosalie Xelonka, who played the Waltz Op. 10, and Nocturne in flat. Stewart Thomson was accompanist. One of the paintings on display was that of the birthplace of Chopin, which was painted by Mrs.

Eugenia Greinert. It shows Chopin's home at Zelazowa-Wola, 60 miles from Warsaw. Other works by Mrs. Greinert were on display recently at the No-Jury Art show. Her brother, Zygmunt Greinert, painted the frescoes on the ceiling in Chopin's birthplace, in 1939.

12 Canada's two far -western provinces are in some disagreement on Royal Commission on Transportation, By and large, the British Columbia approves Alberta suggestions for changing the structure, though it takes exception to a couple of points in the submission of its next-door neighbor. The disagreement centres around a group of rates highly regarded by British Columbia. These are the so-called "trans. continental" tolls, low rates on some commodities moving from the east to the west coast. They were put into effect originally to meet water competition between the coatsts by way of the Panama Canal.

B.C. regards some sections of the Alberta submission as threatening the transcontinental rate levels, which bring eastern commodities into Vancouver at cheaper rates than might prevail otherwise. The transcontinental rates land eastern shipments--say, ned goods Toronto -into Vancouver at less cost than into Calgary, for instance. While not protesting formally against this situation, Alberta has advanced proposals for altering the rate set-up which B.C. regards as hitting indirectly at its favored rates.

Long and Short These proposals relate to what is known as the "long-and-shorthaul" principle, a rate-making precept that sets out that rates between two points shall not be than rates for similar hauls between intermediate points. It is contended the rates bteween the east and British Columbia do not conform to the long-and-short-haul principals in relation to Alberta, Alberta has a proposal for nailing down the principle by legislation, allowing certain exceptions. Alberta would have the long-andshort- haul principle set aside for reasons of "active and compelling" competition, B.C. wants to extend that to take in potential competition as well. The west t-coast province's contention is that, while vessel service between the east and west coasts might stop temporarily, that would still leave enough of an element of water competition to justify lowered rail rates to the coast.

Alberta does not regard the oncea-month ship service between Montreal and Vancouver as real competition to the railways. Competitive Rates On the general question of competitive rates those that are depressed to meet competition--there is some discrepancy, too, between the Alberta and B.C, viewpoints. Alberta has brought in a set of proposals that would impose certain restrictions on the railways in setting these rates, including their scrutiny by the board of transport commissioners. The B.C. view is that the board' should set a "floor" for competitive rates, which would cover the rail- Swystun to Head Ukraine Veterans V.

has not. taken with submissions these, in a brief that lays down a number of major These include applying the principle of freight -rate equaliz. ation across the country and ad. justing the relationships between rates on primary and processed products so as to make it more feasible to process goods near the source of supply. The latter proposal is aimed at developing secondary industry in Alberta.

One result might be that it would bring less raw Alberta materials into the coastal province for processing. But the British Columbia view is that the matter probably work both ways and B.C. would gain as much AS it might lose. TO: MICHAEL TRAVIS be made Honor Judge A. R.
