it a If YV XI Oft (j The title players of A Chorus Line (with glossies): another opening (M P3 wise it seems to sit wsll in the Shubert. I've seen it four times now, and each time I've left the theater exhilirated atier two hours of almost total absorption capped by the most inventive and satisfying finale ever devised for a musical. I think wouldn't want to part with a single member. The more one sees "A Chorus Line" the more one is struck by its beautiful archi-tectureby its artful pacing, the joining of song fragments and snatches of dialogue, the crescendo eruptions into full-scale songs and dances followed by diminuendos. The show itself plays like music, with grace notes provided by Robin Wagner's fluid, paneled setting and Tharon Blusser's superb lighting.

And each time I see it, I'm increasingly taken with its ghostly images ths ghost dancing and ghost talk that are like carry-overs from Ben-netts work "in "Follies" but that here have a gentler, more dreamlike quality. By now, practically every- By DOUGLAS WATT Last evening at the Shubert A Chorus Line" had its 208th public performance and second "opening- night." Just as if this jewel -of a musical were brand-new, which I'm happy report it still looks, the critics, who reviewed it down-, town in the spring-, were invited to inspect it all ovc aain, and afterward there was even a second "opening- night" party downat the Public Theater where it all began. And why not? A celebration should be in order every few months or so. For where else, except "on a stage and under the hand of its creator and director Michael Bennett, are we ever again to experience to the full this very unusual, very personal musical Not on the large or small screens, though it may very well be imprisoned by both in time. And not in the summer tents, nor at Jones Beach.

As for its new home, the sight lines are somewhat less advaots- geous than in its original and smaller quarters, but other exciting than when all 17 atep out, all aglow. The amplified offstage voice of the director (this is a heavily miked show, by the way) does seem to have an unfair advantage at timrs, especially when addressing a former flame, Donna McKech-nie, all alone downstage just before her striking solo "The Music and the Mirror," and again when pumping the dancer Sammy Williams, also alone on stage as, in the one sequence verging on the maudlin, he tells about his degrad ing experience as a drag queen- BOX OFFICE OPENS TODAY LIMITED ENGAGEMENT 4 WEEKS ONLY! Again, though the Marvin Hamlisch score is all ty ready to settle for the obvious phrase or interval most of the time, there is no denying its musicality and shrewd underlining of Edward Kle-ban's smart lyrics.

Also, the orchestrations, the combined work of Bill Byers, Hershy Kay and Jonathan Tunick, can hardly be praised enough. So cheei-3 till the third "opening night." Let's make it soon. at 10 AM av at adm i 541 7290. All Maiar Credit Cards Accepted. Only Call Jen-.

The show opens with bursts of dancing and it closes with a triumphant dance number, and there is much dancing in between the songs and monologues. And while there are several splendid' solos, the chorus itself is -the star.

"A Chorus Line" is never more masses about a lusty boor'l named Jake (Steven Keats), who-is so anxious to be "a real Yankee" that he is willing to sacrifice not only his heritage, but his wife, Gitl (Carol Kane), who cannot' assimilate America undigested quite as easily as he. The contretemps between Jake and Gitl is observed with desperate, silent wisdom by their lodger (Mel Howard), with aggressive nudging by a neighbor (Mrs. Kavarsky), -and with courtly -disdain by Jake's mistress (Dorrie Kav-anaugh).
