Section Two FREEPORT JOURNAL-STANDARD Sporf Section FREEPORT, ILLINOIS, MONDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1963 Coll eges Prepare For Cage Tourneys Star's Loss Doesn't Upset Huskies Coach LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP)Washington Coach Jim Owens doesn't appear particularly upset over the fact that his star fullback, Junior Coffey, won't be playing in the Rose Bowl. At least, he isn't showing it. "I don't think this will change our game plans at all," said Owens Sunday night after returning from a weekend at Palm Springs. "We are just now starting to put in our special stuff.

The other fullbacks run the same plays so we will go right about our business." Coffey, who carried the ball 90 times for the Huskies this season, broke a bone in his left foot during a pass defense drill Saturday afternoon. Coffey's replacement for the New Year's Day game against Illinois will be Charlie Browning, a 6-foot, 200-pound junior from Stockton, Calif. Browning was the top ground gainer for the Huskies this year with 421 yards in 48 carries for 5.0 average. He was Coffey's replacement during the first five games this year when the All- Coast fullback was sidelined by other foot injuries. Bobby Hull Helps Hawks Beat Boston By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Bobby Hull appears to be on his way to a single season goal- scoring record and the Chicago Black Hawks may need just that to nail down their first National Hockey League championship.

The slumping Hawks used Hull's 20th goal of the season as a springboard to a 4-1 victory at Boston Sunday night and maintained their four-point lead over fast-closing Montreal. The Canadiens ripped Detroit 6-1 and Toronto tied New York 1-1 on Bob Nevin's third period tally while the Leafs were shorthanded. Hull, who normally does his heaviest firing in the last half of a season, is ahead of schedule this year. His 20th goal came in the Hawks' 32nd game. The Chicago super-star shares the NHL record of 50 goals with Montreal's Bernie Geoffrion.

Sunday's success was only the third for Chicago in its last 11 games. A month ago the Hawks looked like a runaway winner. Last year, the Hawks led most of the way, but lost the crown Michigan Wins; Purdue Loses 4th CHICAGO (AP) The Big Ten's top basketball teams, led by unbeaten and third-ranked Michigan, swing into rugged holiday tournaments this week in final big tuneups before opening the championship race. A assies Will Pit Fraser, Emerson Against U.S. Team By WILL GRIMSLEY ADELAIDE, Australia Australia has decided to stick with experience and throw its two biggest tennis guns, Roy Emerson and Neale Fraser, against the United States in the Davis Cup Challenge Round starting Thursday.

This means both sides will gamble on two-man teams holding up in Adelaide's sweltering 100-degree heat through both singles and doubles over the three-day test. The Americans plan to bank on Wimbledon champion Chuck McKinley and Dennis Ralston. Harry Hopman, Australia's long time captain, left little doubt that Fraser was his No. 2 singles man after watching the Melbourne veteran whip through a smashing workout reminiscent of his peak three years ago when he held both the Wimbledon and U.S. crowns.

"If Fraser continues his present rate of improvement would have to be counted as the man for the job," Hopman said. "He has this vast store of experience behind him and he is gradually coming back to his old form." It is a one-shot deal for the good-looking Victorian judge's son, who retired from big time competition 18 months ago after winning the U.S. championship twice, and also capturing Wimbledon, become the world's No. 1 amateur. There had been some concern that Fraser, now 30, and away from championship competition for more than a year, might not be able to hold up under the rigorous grind and pressure applied by the more youthful and eager Yanks.

The alternatives are Fred Stolle, a range 24-year-old stylist who has a good but unspectacular record, and John Newcombe, a brash 19-year-old rookie whose confidence and slashing play has won Hopman's heart. Huskies Lose Star Back Illinois Holds Ragged Drill; Elliott Stresses Hard Work By JERRY LISKA PASADENA, Calif.

Irked Coach Pete Elliott of Illinois cast a worried eye at the calendar today after his Illini got off to a ragged start in preparation for the Rose Bowl game with Washington's Huskies. "They just looked much hitting and not much enthusiasm," said Elliott Sunday. It was the team's first full-scale outdoor workout since their Thanksgiving Day conquest of Michigan State for the Big 10 football title. The Illini were to hold their second West Coast workout this morning, before joining the Washington squad for an afternoon tour of Disneyland. Go Into Seclusion After today, Illinois will have only seven single-session daily drills.

Monday night, Dec. 30, the team goes into seclusion in the Passionist Fathers Retreat House at the nearby Foothills community of Sierra Madre. Elliott sympathized with Washington for its loss of star fullback Junior Coffey for the Rose Bowl game. But he made it plain he had troubles of his own readying for the New Year's Day showdown. "It's most unfortunate," Elliott said of the fractured left foot suffered by Coffey in a Saturday drill.

"I'm very, very sorry he will not be able to play. But I'm sure Charley Browning (also a top Huskie fullback) is a fine player." At the same time, Elliott stressed "we have an awful lot of work to do in every running, kicking, and throwing and catching the ball." He continued: Drilled Outside "We looked yesterday just like you would expect a football team to look after a three-week layoff from outdoor work" Washington has had two-a-day sessions at nearby Long Beach since Dec. 16. Illinois also start- ed drills at home the same day, but were held to limited indoor maneuvers for five sub-zero weather days last week. Elliott diplomatically discussed Washington's apparent on-the-scene training edge.

Secret Practices "I'd say our preparations will be the way we have to do it, and Washington's have been the way they wanted to do it," he said. "We've got to be ready a week from Wednesday, and so DICK BUTKUS One More Honor Pro Hockey Pts. The Illini are practicing at Brookside Park, adjacent to the Rose Bowl, a site once used for spring training by the Chicago White Sox. Several policemen have been detailed to ward off possible spies who might ferret out Illini secrets. After Sunday's practice, Elliott cracked: "I hope Washington finds out exactly how horrible we were today." Dick Butkus Named MVP By Tribune Dick Butkus, Illinois' unanimous All-American center- linebacker, Saturday was named by the Chicago Tribune as the most valuable football player in the Big Ten.

The Chicago Vocational High School graduate is the fourth Illini to win the newspaper's Silver Football. Red Grange won the first award in 1924, while Alex Agase Northwestern's new football coach was the 1946 winner. Bill Burrel took the honor in 1956. Selection is made by conference coaches, a panel of veteran officials, Big Ten Commissioner Bill Reed, Tribune columnist Dave Condon, and Tribune sports editor Wilfrid Smith. Butkus received more than half of all first place votes Halfback Sherman Lewis of Michigan State was second, while quarterback Ron DiGravio of Purdue finished third in the balloting.

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The air was filled with footballs at Miami and Houston, but at Long Beach, the air was filled with the talk of be exact the fifth one of Junnor Coffey's left leg.

While George Mira and Don Trull sent footballs sailing at a record clip Saturday in the first major session of post-season college football activity, Washington suffered a severe jolt to it Rose Bowl hopes when Coffey broke a bone in his left foot during a practice session. Coach Jim Owens made this short, terse comment on the injury: "He will not play in the Rose Bowl," he said. Third Foot Fracture The Huskies, who face Big Ten champion Illinois in the Rose Bowl New Year's Day will substitute Charlie Browning for Coffey, who was Washington's leading scorer. It was the third foot fracture suffered by Coffey, How will Coffey's loss affect the Huskies' chances? "It's going to hurt them," a team spokesman acknowledged. On the playing field, Mira led the South all-stars to a 23-14 victory over a North team in the Shrine game at Miami, and Trull paced Baylor to a 14-7 decision over LSU in the Bluebonnet Bowl at Houston.

And Mis- sippi State held off North Carolina State 16-12 in the Liberty Bowl at Philadelphia. Still To Come The big attractions are still to come, with three games scheduled for Saturday, another set for Dec. 31 and the New Year's Day classics around the corner. Mira completed 27 of 42 passes for 366 yards, each figure a North-South record, as the Dixie stars overcame a 14-0 North lead and went on to win the 16th Shrine affair. The madness began last week with a handful of major tourneys.

The big one was in Lexington, where the home folks got downright frantic when Col. Adolph Rupp's host Kentucky lads won their own tourney with a 98-75 conquest of Wake Forest in the final game. Seventh Straight The victory was the seventh in a row for unbeaten Kentucky, ranked second in the nation and obviously angling for the top spot, held by defending national champion Chicago Loyola. The champs refused to yield ground, however. Loyola, 6-0, maintained its 100-point-a-game average with two victories during the week, 112-68 over South Dakota and 91-47 over Ohio Wesleyan.

Other ranked teams remaining unbeaten included No. 3 Michigan, 6-0; No. 6 UCLA, 6-0; No. 8 Vanderbilt, 7-0, and No. 10 Davidson, 7-0.

Seventh-ranked New York University wasn't in action Saturday but suffered a midweek upset at the hands of Wagner. No. 4 Cincinnati also was idle Saturday after two victories during the week.

Princeton, unranked but sporting one of the brightest individual stars, took third in the Kentucky tourney, edging Wisconsin 90-87 in overtime. Bill Bradley, a 6-foot-5 junior, poured in 47 points. Ranked teams in tourney action this week include UCLA vs. Yale and Michigan vs. NYU in the first round of the Los Angeles Classic; Chicago Loyola vs.

List Of Unbeafens Dwindling In State SPRINGFIELD, 111. (AP) Fast starting Collinsville and Lockport escaped weekend action unscathed and lead a dwindling list of undefeated Illinois prep basketball teams into holiday tournaments opening Thursday. Collinsville, ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Poll, loom as the favorite in the East St. Louis tournament while Lockport gathers strong support in the Pontiac meet.

Four of the state's top 16 teams muffed chances to take unbeaten slates into the post- Christmas classics, falling before underdogs on a weekend card dotted with upsets. Ranked Sixth Decatur's Reds, ranked sixth, were stopped for the first time in five outings, dropping a 4541 decision to Champaign Saturday. Peoria Limestone handed Pekin its first setback, 66-61, and Springfield Lanphier walloped Lincoln 75-49. The loss was Lincoln's first in eight games. Maine East surprised previously unbeaten Riverside 6154, and Chicago Heights Bloom, rated fourth, bowed to Thornton 53-51.

Sterling Wins Sterling added Rock Falls to its list of victims by a 66-50 score Saturday and carries a 6-0 slate into the Pontiac competition. The field includes Lockport 7-0, Waukegan 4-0, Pekin 4-1, Lincoln 7-1, Streator 6-1, and Peoria Richwoods 5-2. Centralia's Orphans, third- ranked, rate as the team to stop in their own tourney. Other teams in the Centralla event include Quincy, rated 10th with a 6-1 record; Pinckneyville 3-1, Lanphier 3-2, Benton 3-2, and Belleville 4-2.

Could Find Trouble Although Collinsville is the choice at East St. Louis, the Kahoks could find trouble in Springfield Griffin's unbeaten team, who defeated East St. Louis Lincoln 77-66 Friday for five straight. Danville, winner of its last three games, faces rugged opposition in its own tourney from Anna Jonesboro, Carl Sandburg, Blue Island Eisenhower and Rich Central. Decatur Eisenhower carries a 5-2 mark into the Paris tournament against Thornton Fractional South.

Christian Brothers Quincy, Wood River and Pittsfield are among the other entries. Cobden, winner of its first i nine games, steps into action with larger schools in the McLeansboro tournament.
