He returned to Washington less than a week ago with his mind mad up to follow the advice of hi physicians Mr. Lawshe has had a rather distinguished career In the public service. When McKlnley was elected President in MS he was the owner and editor of the Journal at Converse, a paper he edited from 1SS3 to 1897. He had been postmaster of his home town from to lvC but he was not much known outside of his own county.

Investigated Postal Frauds. Charles W. Fairbanks, who was then a senator from Indiana, had become acquainted with hlny and on the senator's lecommendatlon he was appointed deputy auditor for the postofflce department In 1S37. George Pierce, agej flfty cne, of Benton Harbor, created a ttene. late yesterday afternoon, when he ran amuck. But for the coolness of spectators. Pierce would have done himself bodily harm. He was taken to the police station.

Later he was removed to the Jail. After being in a strait jacket for several hours he recovered his senses. He vlll return home today. Pierce's attack is due, hv believes, to the effect of a dog bite received several years ago. He has buffered a like attack bfore and has ai viays recovered without doing any one or himself injury.
