The Flyers' punting game could tho prove troublesome. Regular punter Tom Sothard suffered a broken Jaw iotat Saturday's win at Villanova and sidelined six weeks. And J.D.

Clark. the No. 2 punter, pulled i hamstring muscle in the same game. "I'm not sure who will be punting Carter admits. IOWA STATE COACH Earle Bruct's primary worries have come from his offensive line, where he's been juggling players, and at quarterback.

"We lost Buddy Hardeman to grades last winter." he says of the quarterback situation. "Mike Try on, a redshirf Jast year who had taken over the No. 1 spot, separated a shoulder In the first quarter of the season opener against Wichita State." Terry Rubley, also redshirted last year, and freshman John Quinn have split time at the position since. Rubley will probably start against UD, according to Bruce. Swift tailback Dexter Green eases the Cyclones' offensive problems a bit.

The 171-pound Junior ran for 1.074 yiwis last fall and had 119 In Iowa State's 35-21 win over Bowling Green last weekend. By Leal Beattie Jwmai HtraM Saarfi Wriaar Rick Carter is being realistic with his University of Dayton football team about Its chances of beating Iowa State this Saturday. "We've told the team there's no such thing as no chance In football," the Flyer coach says, "but we're not telling the team to go out there and rip up Iowa State. If we went In with the one and only motive to win, it wouldn't be very realistic." On paper, UD appears to be grossly mismatched even though It will take a 3-1 record into the 2:30 p.m. EDT game at Ames, Iowa.

The Flyers, In the process of dropping to Division III level, have only about 30 players on scholarship. IOWA STATE, a member of the rugged Big Eight Conference, is 2-1 and has 95 scholarship players. "It's a once in a lifetime shot," Carter says. "That's kind of how we're approaching It we have everything to gain, nothing to lose." Carter's main concerns are moving the ball offensively and avoiding mistakes. "They're so strong on defense," Carter says.

It suits Charlie Joiner to a tee. Truthfully, though, Joiner would have been just as happy to spend the remaining winters of till professional football career In the snow and cold of Cincinnati. That wasn't to be. TWO YEARS ago, after laboring 3ft seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, Joiner was traded to the San Diego Chargers.

It wasn't that the Bengals were unhappy with Joiner. On the contrary, he had just enjoyed his finest season In the National Football League. But it took a player of Joiner's caliber to pry veteran defensive end Coy Bacon from the Chargers, thereby fortifying a weak Bengal defensive line. The deal worked beyond the expectations of both clubs. Bacon, a malcontent with the Chargers, led the NFL with 26 quarterback sacks and was named the Bengals' most valuable player.

Joiner went to San Diego and caught 50 passes for 1,056 yards to earn the Chargers' MVP award. For comparison, consider that Cincy leader Isaac Curtis caught only 42 aerials for 771 yards. "I WAS KINDA' disappointed to leave the Bengals because I really loved the team and the situation they were in," Joiner said by telephone yesterday from his San Diego residence. "1 really wanted to play with the Bengals. I liked Kenny Anderson's passing, and I liked playing opposite Isaac." That is not to say he's unhappy In San Diego.

Although the Chargers are not considered to be as strong as Cincinnati, Joiner says everyone has been good to him. This Sunday, when San Diego enter tains the Bengals In Its home opener, Joiner faces his old teammates for the first time. Joiner Is not out of touch with Cincinnati happenings. Me Is well aware that John McDanlel broke his single game Bengal pass catching record of 200 yards by catching nine for 201 yards against Oakland last year. "ONE YARD!" he said In mock disgust.

"I read it in the paper." Joiner also noticed that Cincinnati acquired defensive tackle Walter Johnson, the former Cleveland Brown. "I'll bet Bill Johnson was licking his chops when he saw Walter Johnson's name on the waiver list," Joiner said. "I'm surprised he (Walter) didn't stick with Philadelphia." Joiner predicts that Walter Johnson will be a starter, displacing either Wilson Whitley or Eddie Edwards, before the season goes much further. "No way they can go with two rookies In there against Oakland and Pittsburgh," he said. The 29-year-old Joiner says the Chargers (1-1) are a young team with good talent.

"WE'RE MORE of a big play team than an overpowering one," he said. "We can't overpower you on offense, but we can scare you." Joiner has a new partner at wide receiver this year. He's Johnny Rodgets, the controversial Heisman Trophy winner from Nebraska who has spent the last for years with Montreal of the Canadian Football League. San Diego was shut out 24-0 by Oakland two weeks ago but bounced back last Sunday to beat Kansas City 23-7. That was the game in which defensive end Leroy Jones caught a fumble and headed toward the wrong goal before correcting the error of his way and running 17 yards for a TD.

Charlie Joiner Baldwin shifted in Dodger system Brian Baldwin, former University of Dayton pitcher, has been asked to report to the Los Angules Dodgers' Arizona Instructional League starting this week The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Baldwin, a righthander, signed as a free agent last June and compiled a 2-0 record with three saves for the Dodgers' Class A team In Clinton, Iowa. He was explaining why he chose to go for a field goal in a second-anii-nlue situation on the New England Petriots' 17-yard line in a 27-27 sudden-death overtime Monday night. "I knew all we would run in that situation were some sort of conservative plays," the Cleveland coach explained. "We didn't want to put the ball up or have our quarterback sacked or, worse yet, lose the ball on a fumble. "IN 1974, MY FIRST year with the Browns (as offensive Itne coach)," Gregg added, "I remember about the same.

situation In a game at San Diego. We decided to run one more play to get better position, the snap was fumbled and we lost the ball and the ballgame. I didn't want to see that happen again. "Brian (quarterback Brian Sipc) told me he had confidence the offense could keep going and take the ball in (for a touchdown)," Gregg said. "I told him I have confidence In them, too, but I said, 'I believe we'll just take our three points and go home.

I'm Don Cockroft's 35-yard field goal, his third three-poiuler of the game, ended the nationally televised National Football League marathon 4:45 into the extra period. Both teams held fourth-period leads, with New England kicker John Smith sending it Into overtime, tied 27-27, on a 34-yard field goal as time ran out in the fourth quarter. THE BROWNS WON the coin toss and received the kickoff in overtime, marching from their 29 deep Into Patriots territory before Cockroft's kick. "Cockroft has kicked really well this summer. We just felt really confident that he'd make it," Gregg said.

Gregg looked ahead to Sunday's game with the Pittsburgh Steelers. "Playing Pittsburgh anytime is not pleasant," Gregg said. "But playing them with just six days of work makes it more difficult than usual. And this is the third straight team we have played with no apparent weakness." The 2-0 Browns opened the season with a 13-3 upset over the Cincinnati Bengals. "Going into overtime took a little out of us physically," Gregg said, "but when you win, injuries and fatigue don't seem as hard to snap back from." 10-0 PADRES TONITE 8:05 Fri.

Barbrton IZaneivie 4. WjiHon Caxmrvifi Elder I Sta Walt kwH (eMmrUifilli GaMma liwi Lakraaof St. 6cird By Dale Dempsey Journal Herald Sporta vVriiar Carroll High School Coach Jim Spoerl calls his veer offense, "The Equalizer." However the first three teams on the Patriot schedule may be forgiven for not seeing the equality of it. Carroll has demolished Beavercreek, Franklin and Wilmington so far, by scores of 36-0, 33-6 and 47-7. Parity, it's not.

"WE CALL THE VEER an equalizer, because we do not have the strength year In, year out to compete with some of the schools," Spoerl said while preparing for Friday's first Greater Dayton League encounter with Jefferson. This year is unusual for the Patriots in that they have three players topping 200 pounds and overall strong offensive and defensive lines. Carroll has run the veer offense for eight years not always with the muscle and talent it has blocking this season. Or with the success it's had this year. "The offensive line is vital to the veer," Spoerl said.

"It is crucial that we explode off the line of scrimmage and that our linemen take the all-important direction step. "We call it creating a new line of scrimmage." BY THAT HE MEANS Carroll linemen must adjust their blocking pattern to create openings for the run, the quick pitch or a pass on the run the three basic elements of the veer. One element of the Carroll veer offense is that wide receivers Dave Green and Jeff Miller, two of Spoerl'8 "blue chippsrs" who also play defense, run pass patterns on nearly every play. And that has drawn some criticism from the officials this year. Said Spoerl: "I had a referee come up to me last week and say, 'Stop sending those kids out for 40 yard sprints, every time they go out we have to go with The tight ends also play an Important role In the veer and end John Lebkisher finds his job a demanding one.

"The tough thing is, a tight end has to be able to block and read different defensive backs," he said. "But he also has to be ready to catch the ball." Guiding the Carroll offense Is quarterback Jim Spoerl Jr, who grew up with the veer watching his dad coach. T1IE PATRIOT DEFENSE has allowed only two touchdowns this year one In each of the last two games. Both scores, however, came late in the game and were of little consequence. Against Wilmington last week the defense kept the shutout for three quarters while the offense ran up a 27-0 lead.

"The defense works because we get good hustle from everybody," says tackle John Sears, who at 6-5, 220 pounds is the biggest of the Carroll linemen this year. "Last week we held the Wilmington quarterback (Dave Williams) to minus 14 yards. We just do our job." And presumably let the offense do the rest all things being equal, of course. 4 TIRE SAVINGS FROM '28 TO 52 Depending On Size M-l M-l M-4J M-l OCTOBER ww won run I 1,1 i.
