TV had expected to have a tremendous week in covering the Democrats. It seemed to lots of others, too, that there was a potential for verbal fireworks to go off all over the place and continue to explode throughout the week. From the standpoint of TV interest, it was Sen. George McGovern who blew the whole show. Not him personally, but his hundreds of backers among all those delegates.

When on opening night they fought off all challenges that sought to derail the McGovern Express, and it became apparent that George would do it, any feeling of exictement went by the wayside. EVENING 6:00 4 News, Sports, Weather. 5 MOVIE; "TREASURE OF political convention is automatically full of fire and enthusiasm. This year NBC's David Brink-ley has a new co-anchorman at a convention, John Chancellor. For the first time sines 1956, Brinkley doesn't have Cpt Huntley, who retired from NBC two years ago. It was interesting to note, however, that on the opening night of the convention, during the CBS coverage, a Channel 2 station break presented Chet Huntley in a commercial for American Airlines.

CBS estimated that about 90 million persons watched s.ome part of the convention on opening night. NBC's estimate was 82 million. A sampling by National Arbitron on Monday between 9:30 and 11 p.m., when all three networks were covering the convention, showed CBS with a rating of 13.4, NBC 11.3 and ABC 8.7. 1:00 2 Paul Bernard; Drama. 4 It's Your Bet competition. In the absence of any real conflict, how could TV possibly make it exciting? Not Like Perry Mason It's obvious that the Democratic Party doesn't have script writers such as those who write for Gunsmoke, Bonanza and Perry Mason. Those scripters know how to prolong suspense. They probably know the ending before they start to write the beginning, but they are skilled in stringing it out.

In last night's telecasts from Miami Beach, the letdown was noticeable both among those being covered and those doing the coverage. Democratic delegates seemed to imply that it was all over and the network newsmen were unenthusiastic in going about their work. On opening night, the network floor reporters outdid themselves in buttonholing and interviewing political celebrities of one kind or another. It was exciting to watch just watch the pictures without judging oral content. On the screen came Gov.

Jimmy Carter of Georgia, Pierre Salinger of the McGovern camp, "Walter Fauntroy, first Congressional delegate from the District of Columbia, and Newton Minow, an Illinois delegate and former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, who in 1961 called TV "a vast DRESSING GOWN," Yvonne Mitchell, Anthony Quayle. Husband thinks of divorce but cannot ignore 20 years of marriage (1 957). V2 CHANNEL NUMBERS WCBS 2 WPIX 11 WTIC 3 WNET 13 WNBC 4 WLIW 21 WNEW 5 WNYE 25 WABC 7 WNYC 31 WTNH 8 WXTV 41 WOR 9 WNJU 47 Television introduced a new daytime game show yesterday the Bobby Fischer-Boris Spassky chess match in Reykjavik, Iceland. A recreation of the opening match in the world championship was carried here over Channel 13 and on TelePrompTer's cable TV system on Channel 10 in upper Manhattan. The program on Channel 13 originated in a TV studio in Albany where Shelby Lyman, a chess master, received move-by-move reports from Reykjavik and recreated the play on a chess board in the studio.

TelePromp-Ter received reports from Associated Press and had international grandmaster Arthur Bisguier repeat the moves and comment on the play. Presumably chess fans were elated to find a TV program just for them. But fans of Hollywood Squares, another daytime game show, may have thought the chess telecast was terribly square. Personalities Missing But last night the floor reporters did not seem to find such personalities. Walter Cronkite, John Chancellor, Howard K.

Smith and other commentators kept talking about upcoming issues on rules and platform. There is no question that issues are important, but and personalities are much more readily interesting. Considering all those who came on the tube last night both news TRACTOR TRAILER men and Democratic officials, delegates and all the only figure with enthusiasm was Gov. Rubin Askew of Florida. He made the keynote speech.
