Franklin County Folks Watch UFO Wednesday Night SESSER It was a hectic night in Franklin county, Wednesday, as deputies and police kept their eyes to the sky following a mysterious bright light. The light was first reported over Benton airport, and later was watched from the Sesser area. It reportedly then headed south, in the direction of DuQuoin.

The light, "so bright it hurt the eyes to look at it," according to one witness, was variously described as white, or greeen and red. The sightings lasted about 35 minutes. Dr and Mrs. Arthur Basso, a Benton dentist who lives south of Sesser, went outside their home after hearing of a sighting in Benton on their police radio, and saw the light in the west. Basso said the light appeared white to him, but that his wife thought it was green and red.

She said the light appeared to be roatating. Basso said that if the source of the light had been an aircraft, it would have had to be a helicopter, because of the way it appeared to hover and move. The sighting came between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. The Bassos called the Franklin county sheriff's office about the sighting, but the light had disappeared behing the horizon before a deputy arrived.

Basso s'aid that he trained binoculars on the light, but that he was unable to see it any more clearly with the binoculars. At DuQuoin, a police log entry by city police Officer Don Jackson said," Shift begins 10 p.m. by chasing UFO. Hope they catch it. I would like to know what they would do with one." "What I'm mostly afraid of is mediocrity and boredbm." Sapper confesses to an early inability to coexist with a variety of educational institutions before he enlisted in the Army to learn unconventional warfare. "At first it was all for pie, the flag and the whole I enjoyed what I was doing because we were doing some good," he says. "Then the United States started imposing our own kind of system on the Vietnamese: B52s, ice cream, air conditioners and staff cars. "I think the system stinks. But it's the only system we've got, and you can't do anything by running off and becoming a radical.

"You've got to enter the system You've got to look for the points you can move and the places where things can be changed, and you can't care about your career." Sapper says he left the Army disenchanted and came back to Vietnam as a freelance photographer, "to see if could do it, to see if it satisfied me. "When I got down to about 135 pounds I decided to seek other employment." He took jobs with civilian contractors. "1 wanted to see it through," he says. "There's no political idology or anything anymore. I just like the action.

If I'd saved just that ammo dump I'd have felt pretty damn good." But Sapper says it's almost time to go now, before boredom and bitterness really set in, time to gotoackandsee what formal education has to offer. "The trouble with leading fairly interesting life is that it takes more and more adventures to keep you satisfied, and you begin to see your limits.
