James Kerrigan, the member of the Btsird of Coiincilmen who was arretted a few days since, charged with aiding the escape of Baker, the mur derer, was this morning brought before Judge Woodruff, in the Court of Common Pleat, and his discharge demanded. (The prianner it will be recollected, was committed in default of 1 19,000 hail The spectacle of a member of the city government arraigned on such a charge, drew together a great emwd, among whom were -many politicians, and other friends of the prisoner. Kerrigan's release was demanded on the ground that facts enough were not stated ia the return to warrant detention, and that the statutes in other respects had not been complied with. The District Attorney, however, contended that the commitment was perfectly legal. The Judge bad no doubt of thepowerol magistrate in the the premises and.

Applicatim wat also made this morning, before Judge Mortis, to admit to bail Morrissey, Hyler and Linn, three of the parties implicated as accessories befotothe fact to the murer of Poole. It is contended, that inasmurh as Irving was admitted to bsii, the same privilege should be exiended to bit associstcs.

The writ is returnable to. morrow. Hon. Mr. Soole is hack in town.

He is staying at the Metropolitan, and receives many calls. His tiusiness here has reference to private affairs, and not to the grinding of any political axes, so his friends say. There is hardly a doubt now that the Maine liquor law, in its most stringent shape, will past the Senate as well aa the Assemrly; and that it will receive the signature of the Governor, of course, there is no doulit. Such ii the tenor of private let ters received from Albany to-day, and ths effect among the liquor interest here, in eonsenuence, I need hardly add, is very marked. All along, the Srueral expectation baa been that the bill would killed.

The experiment it proposes, so tar as the city of New York is ouaoarnrd, will he one of monientom import, a great social and moral revolution, for which trier is no precedent in our municipal history. It it not to be wondered at, therefore, that the progress of the bill, through its several stages, is watched with the utmost interest by everybody. A series of very severe criticisms upon Mr. For-reat's acting (at the Broadway), in the Tribune of thu city, are exciting no little remark in theatrical circles. Personally, they are very savage upon the tragrdian, and Mr.

Forrest's friends are not backward in intimation! that spplication for legal redress may be the result. An invest irstion has been going on at the Mayor's Office, the day or two past, into an alleged levy of black mail, by some of the city police, upon the keepers of certain disorderly houses.
