(AP) Delegates to the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) conference will discuss the.

controversial issue of abortion today. Resolutions urging the convention both to state its opposition to abortion and to distribute pro and con arguments on the subject have been submitted to the resolutions committee. The. Rev. Hugh Lindquist, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church of Oklahoma City, submitted a resolution asking the SBC "to Southern Baptist pastors and church congregations to preach and teach against the crime of abortion.

"I also move that we go on record as being opposed to abortion for any reason, and that we go on record favoring a constitutional amendment to the United States Constitution forbidding abortion," he told the a 16,000 delegates. The Rev. Robert Holbrook, pastor of First Baptist Church of Hallettsville, asked the SBC to "instruct the Christian Life Commission to prepare and distribute to the and membership updated materials on abortion, presenting the. issue from all perspectives with a proportionate armed robbery. Prevatte, his eyes dry, shook hands with both his attorneys and was led from the courtroom.

In other action Wednesday, the members approved a resolution encouraging SBC boards and committees to give minority groups a fair representation. The convention later voted down a resolution asking that minority groups make up at least ten per centf.

of the members of all SBC boards. The resolutions approved by the SBC are not binding on affiliated churches. On Wednesday, delegates defeated several motionsin- cluding recommendatons by i i a Life Commission-dealing with freedom for women. Led by conservative sections, they voted to table the commission's recommendations that urged Baptists to encourage women "to achieve their God-intended potential." The commission also urged that Southern Baptists commit themselves to work against covert and overt discrimination of women inside and outside the churches. A commission recommendation calling for amendment of a by-law to establish that at least one- fifth of all members, of SBC boards be women failed to get the required two-thirds majority.

The vote against the recommendations dealing with women and the church was interpreted as a reaction against a possible move to have the SBC recognize women ministers. The question of ordination of women was sent back to the local churches when delegates voted against an amendment that would have prohibited the SBC boards from recognizing women ministers. It is estimated that there are between 15 and 20 women vinisters in local Baptist churches throughout the United Another resolution approved Wednesday dealt with a favorite" Baptist target, liquor. It called on members of the SBC "to urge elected representatives in Congress to initiate and support legislation to ban the advertising of alcoholic beverages on television and to require the labeling of alcoholic beverages as potentially dangerous to the health and safety of the users." The resolution was the result of two separate proposals submitte'd by Carbon Sims of Monticello, A and Josie Montgomery of Wilmington, N.C. Delegates elected the Rev.

Stewart B. Simms, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Greer, S. first vice president of the SBC. Simms defeated Mrs. ert Fling of Pleasantville, N.Y.y and a former president of the Southern Baptist Women's Missionary Union.

Three other convention officers were re-elected. are Clifton Allen of Wiriston-Salem, N. recording secretary; W.
