The chiller is featured at RKO 23d Coliseum and other Showcase Theaters. Miss Page gives a fascinating and outstanding performance as a lady of breeding whose mind slips when she learns her wealthy husband has left nothing but debts. To continue living in the manner to which she has become accustomed, she hits on the murderous scheme of disposing of her housekeepers, lonely women with lifelong savings.

MISS GORDON GIVES an amusing peppery portrayal as "Aunt Alice" who suspects her employer had something to do with the disappearance of a friend (Mildrer Dunnock). The scenes with Miss Gordon and Miss Page, each gauging the other until they I a "The Oblong Box," American International Pictures' screen version of the Edgar Alan Poe dated classic at the Penthouse and Loew's Cine Theaters, has the proper atmosphere of suspense and mystery, plus so many throat-slittings that the staunch-est horror fan will cringe. Opening scenes begin with glimpses of African voodoo rites and an unidentified white man nailed to a tree. Then the action shifts to a mansion in 19-century England where two brothers live. One is a chained prisoner, supposedly afflicted with a tropical disease that leads to madness.

The other acts as his keeper, but also shows concern for appearances. WITH THE HELP of the family lawyer, the ill brother seeks treatment from a witch doctor. Plans go awry and the afflicted man is buried alive. Grave robbers bring him to another doctor who has been paying for stolen bodies. Revived, the patient discovers no treatment is available and he goes on a vendetta.

Debts due him are repaid in blood. ACTING IS competent enough with Vincent Price and Alastair Williamson playing the brothers, and Christopher Lee skulking about as a doctor who experiments on dead people. Hilary Dwyer as Price's fiancee, and Sally Geeson as a maid, lend genteel screaming support. is uneven with a definite lag before a surprise ending. But that ending will make your skin crawl.

Rounding out the cast are Rosemary Forsyth as a next-door neighbor who almost gets killed for meddling; Robert Fuller as Miss Gordon's solicitous nephew; Peter Brandon as Miss Page's less principled nephew and Joan Huntington as his cheating wife. BUT ASIDE FROM strong competition from Miss Gordon, Miss Page runs away with the film.

Her performance overshadows that of the rest of the players, capturing interest from beginning to end. The production, based on a novel by Ursula Curtiss, was filmed on location in Tucson, Arizona, and at the Aldrich Studios in Hollywood. Aldrich left the directing to Lee H.
