1 Standard-Port Mwiltai ft. INt Several cities in market for Rouse-Thornton fight By FRANK QUINN Standard-Post Staff Writer The World Boxing Association hasn't yet taken action on vacating at least for an interim the world's light heavyweight championship held by Torres. Several cities, however, already in the market for a title bout between Wayne Thornton, No. 1 contender and Roger Rouse, of Anaconda, the No. 2 WBA aspirant.

It was learned here Wednesday that Tony Petronella, Providence, Rhode Island, chairman of the WBA Ratings Committee, and other WBA brass, will be meeting in New York, PICTURE CLOUDED Late Wednesday night IB a message received over the Associated Press wire, Jim Deskln, president of the WBA laid. "Torres remains champion. He was granted honorable six-month medical leave by the New York Athletic Commission. He is not being stripped of his title. Rouse remains No.

2 contender hi U.S. and World WBA rankings." Thursday or Friday. It is ex- pected that the committee will declare the crown vacated, placing Torres on an interim basis, and tossing the already heralded Rouse-Thornton scrap up for grabs. Such action by the WBA has been anticipated and has led to matchmakers in Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle and even in New York putting out feelers for such a fight. Dewey Fragetta of New York, International matchmaker, who describes himself as "an international boxing agent." is reportedly among those interested in such a fight.

He is a one-man operation and maintains an office under the firm name of World Boxing. He arranged for Paslrano's defense of the LHW crown against Terry Downes in England and the Eddie Perkins- Carlos Hernandez junior welterweight bout in Caracas as well as many title and title elimination battles in this country. He is not a manager, promoter or matchmaker, simply an agent for fighters. Pete Jovanovich. Anaconda, manager of House, has been in communication with Thornton's camp, and reports Thornton is willing to go for such a bout.

Jovanovich expects to hear Friday from Ben Greene of New York who will be in on the Petronella-called meeting. He has already informed Greene, who writes the column on the Fistic Scene for Boxing Illustrated, that Rouse wants the fight in Butte. Jovanovich said that Montana Boxing Enterprises of Anaconda, is definitely interested in making a bid for the scrap, if it is arranged. Greene has been beating the tom-toms for such a fight. He packs weight with the WBA.

Meanwhile Rouse continues to get Montana, particularly the Butte-Anaconda area, national publicity. The January issue of Boxing Illustrated carries a lengthy, illustrated article on the Anacondan. Pistures show Rouse with Jovanovich, Rouse cooling Johnny Persol in one round In Anaconda, and Rouse with former world champions who were in Anaconda for another Montana Boxing Enterprises Inc. presentation in which Rouse decked another opponent in one stanza. The article also tells of his draw here with Ed- die Cotton of Seattle over whom Rouse later scored a TKO win here in seven.

That win skyrocketed Rouse into the WBA No. 2 contending ranks. Torres has not defended his title since he clobbered Willie Pastrano to capture the crown in one of 1965's biggest boxing upsets. That was last March. Recently the New York Stale Boxing Commission gave the champ a "medical suspension" which also gave him a reprieve from the rule requiring a champion to defend his title within six months after winning It.

Jovanovich, prior to that, told Cain Young, Torres' manager, Montanans were prepared to offer $75,000 for a light heavyweight title scrap. It was after that that Torres came up with a pancreas condition. WBA officials have indicated they'd prefer to have Torres take an interim vacation, putting the crown up for grabs, with Torres to get first shot when he is back in shape. That's also the feeling of Troy Evans. Helena, chairman of the Montana Athletic Commission, and a member of the WBA rules group.

Games getting easier? no, says Rae, Simon By BOB BROWN Standard-Post Sports Editor They're not getting any easier. Both Bob Rae, Butte High basketball coach, and Otto Simon, Butte Central coach, were in complete agreement with that statement Wednesday as they commented on their upcoming Big 32 games. Butte Central's Maroons have one game on tap this weekend. They meet Missoula Hellgate Friday night in Missoula. Butte's Bulldogs play Anaconda Central in the Butte High Gymnasium Friday night before taking off for Bozeman where they face the talented Hawks Saturday night.

The Bulldogs are winless in three outings, but they've been improving with each game. Butte's latest setback was a heartbreaikng 76-75 loss to Mis- ioula Sentinel in a double overtime. "Our shooting was a lot better and we showed more hustle in that game," Rae laid. "It's too bad we couldn't have won It. If Brunei! (Ron) hadn't fouled out, we may have woo it." Brunei! scored 21 pointi before fouling out Witt 1:14 remaining ta the fourth quarter.

He wasn't around for either overtimt period Little John Dawsoo, who scored 16 points, showed remarkable poise for a sophomore. His performance earned him a starting position. Rae plans to start Dawson, along with Brunei), Ron Godbout, Jim Parrish and Chuck Schindele, Friday night. Rae had words of praise for Godbout, who poured through 20 points, many on long jump shots, in the game against Sentinel. Brunei! Is Butte's leading scorer after three games.

He's netted 44 points on 13 field goals and 18 free throws for a 14.7 average. Dawson, with 33 points, is averaging 11.0 ppg. Anaconda Central is 1-1 In Big 32 play and 2-2 overall. When asked to comment on Butte's game against Bozeman, Rae said, "If we expert to win, we'll have to play flawless basketball, and even then we'd have our hands full." Bozeman, rated No. 1 in the pre-season poll, was upset, 78-64, by Helena last weekend.

Butte dropped a 55-54 to Helena in the Butte Central Roundtable Tourament. If comparative scores mean anything, Butte has the advantage over Bozeman. But rest assured, comparative scores mean nothing. And Rae would be the first to tell you that. On the Central scene, Sim- Mi Isn't as happy at Name on marquee dream come true-Gonzales NEW YORK (AP) Manuel Gonzalez saw his name on the Madison Square Garden marquee for the first time Wednesday.

"This li a dream come true," laid the 26-year-old welterweight challenger who can't read or write but can make out "Griffith vs. Gonzalez." "I saw our pictures and names on the posters around town," said the Texan from Odessa. "The first time I saw the poster I rubbed my hand across his picture and left me all alone the champion. "I beat him before and I can beat him again I know I can do it." The oddsmakers think differently. They have made weltwer- weight champion Emile Grifftih a 14-5 favorite to win the title 15- rounder at the Garden Friday night.

A $7.00 Scotch for only What's the gimmick? Here it is: would expect him to be. His team has reeled off four straight victories, the last two were 56-49 and 81-64 decisions over Dillon and Deer Lodge, respectively. The first two were over Billings Senior and Helena in the Roundtable Tourney. "We didn't play as well last weekend as we did the weekend before in the tournament," Simon said. "We rebounded poorly and our fast break didn't pick up until the second half against Deer Lodge." Getting back to rebounding, Simon said, "We didn't screen our opponents off the boards.

That's something we must do If we expect to beat Hellgate." Hellgate's starting lineup averages slightly over 6-2. Mike Judd, at 6-2, in Central's tallest player. Gene Lewis, 6-5 junior, is Hellgate's starting er "We'll really be at a height disadvantage," Simon said. That's why it's so important we get position under the boards." Pat McMahon, who upped his average to 13.5 ppg with 18 and 22-point putputs last weekend, was "our best all-round player in the two games," Simon noted. "Judd looked good in the second half of the Deer Lodge game.

It wasn't until then that he started to rebound well. Whenever Judd is rebounding well, his scoring picks up." Judd scored 35 points in the two games. He is Central's leading scorer with 74 points an 18.5 average. The Petrioo twins, Pat and Mike, are tigers on defense. They can harrass you to death," Deer Lodge Coach Frank Pitman said when he called the Central-Deer lodge game into the Standard-Post Saturday night.

Simon plans to go with his usual starting Pet- rinos, Jim Davis, Judd and Hellgate. "We're stressing team work In practice this week," Simon emphasized. "Team work is a must if we're to be successful." Hellgate was rated No. 4, along with Central and Libby, in the Lee Newspaper pre-season poll released last Sunday. SCORING BUTTE 6 FC FT Pis.

BALTIMORE Baltimore Colts made official Wednesday that injured quarterback John Unitas will not play any more this National Football League season or in the title game. They put him on the reserve list. Unitas already had been eliminated from playing against the Green Bay Packers Sunday or at Los Angeles the following Saturday when the Colts wind up their regular schedule. Wednesday's action removes any possibility of him appearing in the title playoff, if the Colts make it. The Colts are one-half game in the lead of the Western Conference and can clinch the title by beating Green Bay.

Torn ligaments in his knee were repaired and a cartilage removed after Unitas was injured in the Colts 13-0 loss to the Chicago Bears last Sunday. By placing Unitas on the reserve list, from which he cannot be recalled this season, the Colts are one short of the allowed maximum of 40 players.
