The thing is that Norman Lear based his creation upon the BBC comedy "Till Death Do Us Part." That show is no longer on the air in England.

ARCHIE BUNKER, played by Carroll O'Connor in "All in the Family," first saw life as a lower middle-class Englishman who had an opinion on everything and everybody and expressed it freely. Lear acquired the American rights three years ago, turned it into Archie' 'The Winner' Bobby (Mike Lookinland) tries to eat his way to a trophy in an ice-cream eating contest, in ''The Winner," on "The Brady Bunch," tonight at 7: 30 on Channels 12 and 22. 7:00 a.m. Today Show (2) (5) Barbara Walters' report of preparations for Tricia Nixon's wedding at 8:30 a.m. is a highlight.

When another artist is arrested for the crime, a flamboyant lawyer is brought in. Jose Ferrer, Carolyn Jones, Roddy McDowell and Clu Gulager are featured. 11:30 p.m. Tonight Show (2) (5) Orson bean, Alexis Smith and Bob Uecker, former pro-baseball player, are guests. 11:30 p.m.

Dick Cavett (22) (12) Ballet dancer Jacques P'Amboise and partner, Carole Schimoff, are featured. TV Movies A-EXCELLENT B-GOOD C-FAIR D-POOR an American family and got ABC to finance a pilot show as "Those Were the Days." ABC financed a second pilot but eventually lost Interest and Lear took it to CBS. "All in the Family" had its premiere on CBS in January, and within a few months had captured Emmy awards as the best new series and best comedy series. JEAN STAPLETON, who plays the long-suffering wife, won an Emmy as the best actress in a comedy. The show has been the highest-ranked regular series 1n the past two Nielsen rating periods.

First it was topped only by the Emmy awards show and, in the latest rating period, for two weeks ending May 23, it is outranked only by the Miss USA Beauty Pageant.
