By SANfORD MARKEY Written Especially for Central Press and this Newspaper IN THAILAND, when they stags a roundup, they do it with the biggest animals of all--elephants. Taking a pago from our western rodeos, the Thais have fashioned an elephant roundup that has become a tourist attraction that encompasses history with all the ingredients of a three-ring circus.

Once the pachyderm was the symbol of the land of Siam and meant good fortune. He played a dominant role in the nation's history, being engraved on the first Thai coins and on many old monasteries. Even the map of Thailand resembles an elephant, the trunk being the peninsula, the upper portion, the animal's head. When the kings of Thailand or Siam went to war, they rode elephants decked in most colorful howdahs, and loaded with weapons and supplies. Even today, when a white elephant is discovered in.the northern forests, it becomes tha king's property, and a day of festivity is proclaimed.

At one time, tha Thais had more than 200,000 domesticated elephants in the Surin area, about 300 miles northeast of Bangkok. Annually, the natives "Went into the forest to capture, subdue and sell the pachyderms to augment the local economy. AS the elephant supply became, the government, in 1951, passed a law prohibiting their hunting, killing and exporting. Furthermore, since elephants suffer from the heat, laws now permit them to work only four or five mornings a week, freeing afternoons for "grazing and rest, particularly in teak forests. Even though they live to a great age, the elephants' best working years are between 30 to 80.

Elephant today, with their additional rodeo flourish, began in 1964 when the government tourist office instituted "Elephant capture in reverse." Instead the hunter going into the forest, the government brought the. elephants to the Surin Airfield, about two miles from town. A GRAND parade of 200 elephants opens the festivities that include i for tourists; a tug-of-war i a .70 men against one beast of burden; races that make the charioteers of Rome fade by comparison and, of course, a demonstration of how Thai hunters subdue the wild elephant by lassoing his hind foot and then training him with the help of domesticated animals. Recognizing, too, that half of the fun of travel is getting there, the Thai tourist office arranges for special trains to make the overnight trip from Saigon with a native breakfast, folk dances, and hours of sight-seeing to allow for the of Thai products.
