00 00 Death Notices r CM W M r w u w Q Q "K K H C2 PS w Puf Gow on Screen Hollywood, Dec. 23 (AP) Charles Ruggles, 84, the lovable and witty character actor of Hollywood's warm and funny movies of the 1930s and 1940s, died today ot cancer. A wagr who took humor sen ously, Ruggles liked to say that people had told him time and time again a comedian had to be born funny "which is a lot of bunk." Ruggles, a short chunky fellow with a loo t of mischief in his eyes, had a career that spanned almost all of this cen-turv Anil inrhtrl- Charlea ed stage, silent Buggies and talking movies, radio and television. Often he played the long-suf- ferinjr husband of scatterbrained actress . Mary Boland. Later he settled into roles as t. kindly and wise old-timer, often a rascal and sometimes a bit rakish, as in "The Pleasure of His Company." Two Series on TV He starred in two short-lived television series, The Ruggles and The World of Mr. Sweeney. In 1958-59 he returned to the Broadway stage for 'Th Pleasure of His Company." Death came at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica. He entered the hospital in September. He and his wife Marion, spent recer.t years in their home at nerrby Pacific Palisades. OBITUARY MIMI HENZELL Mimi Benzell, 47, once a reign ing soprano of the Metropolitan Opera Company and later a ra dio and television pop star, died last night in North Shore Hospital, Great Neck, L. I., after a lengthy illness. Miss Benzell made her debut with the Met in 1945 at 22 and remained there for five years before accepting more lucrative night club and TV jobs. She was married to mu-s i c publisher Walter Gould. They lived at 45 Cardinal Road, Flower Hill, L. I. - A funeral service will be held Sunday at the Riverside Chapel, 70th St. and Amsterdam Ave. f I Mimi Benzell BESSIE IIILLMAN Mrs. Bessie Hillman, 81, a vice president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, AFL-CIO, and widow of labor leader Isidney Hillman, died yesterday at St. Vincent's Hospital. Mrs. Hillman, who lived at 341 W. 24th St., was a women's rights advocate in the labor movement. A member of a subcommittee of the President's Commission on the Status of Women in 1963, she also served as a delegate for the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions at meetings of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in 1962-63. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Free Synagogue, 30 W. 68th St. ISRAEL SCHAWARTZBERG Funeral services for Israel Schawartzberg, 56, general manager of Scanlan's magazine, will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at the Riverside Chapel, Amsterdam Ave. and 76th St. Schawartzberg spent a total of 14 years in prison for offf.nses ranging from swindling to fixing basketball games. He attained a reputation as a jail- house lawyer and during his periods of freedom lectured lawyers on finer points of criminal law. While serving in Dannemora and Sing Sing for attempted robbery, he won 29 out of 32 writs for fellow prisoners. Schawartzberg died Tuesday in Montreal of a heart attack. WILLY IIOFFLIN London, Dec. 23 (AP) Willy Ilofflin, general manager of the Savoy Hotel for 19 years until his retirement in 1960, died today at his home in Rottingdean. The Swiss-born hotelier, who came to Britain as a potato peeler, was known as the confidant of kings, presidents, duchesses and .debutantes. LAWRENCE HAMMER A service will be held for Lawrence Hammer, 59, of 206-15 26th Ave., Bayside, Queens, today at 2 p.m., at Garlick's Memorial Chapel, 98-16 Queens Blvd., Queens. Hammer, a retired police captain and attorney, died yesterday at Booth Memorial Hospital, Main St., Flushing. BAILEY B. PEPPER Funeral services for Bailey B. Pepper, 65, chairman of the department of entomology at the College of Agriculture, Rutgers University, will be held at 2 p.m., Monday at the New Brunswick, N.J. Presbyterian Church.
