1 Storm birth televised by Skylab HOUSTON (UPI) -Skylab's astronauts Saturday televised the birth of tropical storm Brenda in the Gulf of Mexico and planned to beam back more pictures of it early Sunday. Alan L. Bean, Owen K. Garriott and Jack R. Lousma, showing the benefits of manned spaceflight, interrupted their day off to photograph the tropical depression near Cuba that later turned into the second tropical storm of the year.

Although ground controllers asked the pilots only to take still photos of the storm, Mission Commander Bean insisted on television which showed the swirling winds expected to reach hurricane force of 74 miles per hour early Sunday. "We'll get it with both because I think one of the advantages of manned space- SCLC raps Americanism award rite News, Twin Falls, Idaho Sunday, August 19, 1973 flight is to give a quick look at something that's said Bean. "Whereas these photographs get back in another month and they won't do any good. By then the hurricane will have disappeared from the face of the Earth." "It looks like it's just being born out here in the Gulf," Bean reported as the television showed the mass of clouds and air currents. "You can see the circular structured pattern of an embryonic tropical storm.

We'll try to keep an eye on it for you on a day by day basis, not only where it is but how it's developing as far as size and intensity is concerned." Flight Director Philip C. Shaffer said the television of such things as hurricanes is an eventual goal of spaceflight, but may not always be as good as higher -flying satellitepictures. "They show the overall picture for better weather forecasting," he said of the satellites. "But they certainly don't get the detail that we get 270 miles." Bean planned Sunday to test a new type of flying device that looks much like a saddle with jet shoes instead of stirrups. He controls the device by wiggling his toes to fly up or down and has to maneuver his body to go forward or backward.

"We had a good busy day today," Shaffer said in a briefing. "We have a full science day again tomorrow." The rural fire department put out a fire in a potato cellar on the Ed Adams farm about five miles southeast of town. The cellar was destroyed but firemen saved a truck parked inside. Damage was estimated at $10,000 to $15,000. Adams said the fire may have been started by children playing with matches. Shortly after that fire started, another fire destroyed two outbuildings, a chicken coop and straw pile at a home about three miles northwest of Jerome.

City firemen also answered that alarm. Damage was estimated at $5,000, including about $1,200 worth of antique harness. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (UPI) -The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Friday criticized Sen. Edward Kennedy, for presenting an Americanism award to Alabama Gov.

George Wallace, although Kennedy actually did not make the presentation. The SCLC, in a resolution adopted by delegates to its 16th annual convention, said Kennedy gave Wallace the award July 4 when the two shared a speakers' platform at Decatur, Ala. The award, however, was given Wallace by Decatur city officials. The resolution said Kennedy presented the award in an act that was "the height of political opportunism in the United States at a time when the crisis in our nation demands electoral leadership uncompromising with racism, police statism and mob rule.
