Nicklaus, with the U.S. Open and Masters titles already tucked away, immediately began a week of intensive practice for the July 12-15 British Open.

FIDE President Dr. Max Euwe said he felt the major outstanding differences had been settled at a meeting between FIDE, the Icelandic organizers and Spassky's advisers ending early Thursday. "The match will start on Sunday or at the latest A MOTOR HOME containing nearly all the boxing gear owned by the Quarry brothers, burned after a tire blowout on the freeway in Riverside Wednesday. Things can still go wrong," he added. Schmid said the draw of lots to decide who is to play white in the first of the 24 games in the $250,000 match will be held at 8 p.m.

(4p.m. EDT) Thursday. Dr. Euwe said a new meeting, also involving Fischer advisers, would be held Thursday. He also said he felt the Soviet demand for a penalty for the 29-year-oldAmerican challenger for showing up late for the start of the match, originally scheduled for July 2, "might be settled later" at the FIDE congress later this year in Skopje, Yugoslavia.

But Schmid said the Soviet demand that Fischer loses the first game and a crucial point in the battle for the world title was still not completely solved. Chess sources said Gudmun-dur Thorarinsson, president of the Icelandic Chess organization, was communicating with the Soviet chess federation in Moscow concerning the demand. One other point to be settled is Spassky's demand for an apology from Fischer with the American's signature on it. No such document has yet been presented to the Russian world champion, but Dr. Euwe said he was satisfied that it would be forthcoming.

I spent a couple of days clearing up in the office and have been to the Bahamas on a 10 day holiday with my family, fishing, skin-diving and swimming. "I wanted to let my game drop down so I could build it up again," Nicklaus added. I have played a couple of times and have been practicing with the small ball.

"I have come early because there is a variety of things to do. It takes three to five days to get over the time change and I have to learn Muirfield again. I shall play at least one round a day, probably 27 holes. "If I win the Grand Slam I have no intention of eettine out of the game. I have no reason to because I have enjoyed the game so much more since I won at St.

Lee Coleman, who was president of the now defunct all star boxing club, received $30,000 and Perry Payne of Beaumont, former manager of light heavyweight contender Mark Tessman, received $20,000. Their attorney, Ted Musick, received $5,000.

Judge Allen B. Hannay ruled against Patterson for failing to show up to contest a $380,000 suit filed by Payne, Coleman and Tessman. They contended Patterson did not show up for three fights scheduled with Tessman in 1970. Patterson claimed he suffered hand injuries twice. Payne said Patterson refused a third time and invited the suit.

(UPI) Gordon Tovani, who calls himself the world's greatest barefoot place-kicker, Wednesday lofted his one millionth place kick in a familiar school yard. Tovani, a 46-year-old medical supply salesman, booted his millionth place-kick 58 yards on the fly over the top of a 40-foot building at St. Anselmo's School and through a football crossbar. He claims it's a world record. In 1932 at the age of six, Tovani place-kicked his first football at the same school.

About 33 years ago, he began keeping a careful log of his place kicks which average 74 a day. "I figure I have another good 30 years of kicking," said Tovani who is regarded as the dean of American place-kicking coaches. The former kicker of the Oakland Raiders is author of a booklet titled "Agility Drills for the Field Goal Unit" used nationally by colleges and high schools. Always kicking barefooted by swinging his toes straight into the football, Tovani holds the world record for the longest barefoot place-kick of 83 yards at Reno, in May 1959. PARIS (UPI)-An East German team Wednesday set a new world record for the women's relay event by shaving a half-second off the former record, also held by East Germany, with a time of 3:28.8.

The quartet, made up of Monika Zehrt, Helga Seidler, Dagmar Kasling and Brigit Rqhde, turned in the record performance during a track meet with France which East Germany won 220.5 to 187.5. Miss Zehrt, who Tuesday equalled the world record for the 400 meters in 51.1 seconds, ran the fastest 400-meter leg of Wednesday's relay in 51.7. Miss Seidler was second fastest with a 52.1 clocking and the other two members both did 52.5 to put together the record time. The former record of 3:29.3 was held by an East German team which included Miss Zehrt and Miss Seidler. In spite of two new national records set by French competitors, East Germany took first place in 14 of 20 events to win the pre-Olympic meet.
