Idaho B-3 il alone picks apart Chargers' defense, 52-24 The victory improved the Browns' San Diego's Joiner snaps NFL receiving mark I- 1 I By The Associated Press The Pittsburgh Steelers may not be ready to nickname their offense Air Noll, but they cut San Diego off at the pass Sunday with the Chargers' own best offensive weapon. Mark Malone riddled San Diego's porous secondary for 18 of 22 completions and four touchdowns, three to John Stallworth, and ran for a fifth touchdown as the Steelers ended a tim-Toma Incincr ctronlr with the Chargers' final possession of the game. He later caught a 19-yard pass on the same drive. Joiner's scoring catch came with 5:11 remaining in the game.

All of the receptions came on passes thrown by Chargers' reserve quarterback Ed Luther, who replaced Dan Fouts late in the second quarter after Fouts suffered a groin pull. Joiner had six catches for 70 yards and has 55 receptions this season, tying him for the team lead with the injured Kellen Winslow. Joiner also broke the overall pro football record for receptions held by Tommy Joe Coffey who caught 650 passes in a 14-year career in the Canadian Football League. "I would trade the catches today for a win," Joiner said. "We weren't in it today and I started everything out by droping a pass in the first quarter." The 37-year-old Joiner, who broke into pro football as a defensive back with the Houston Oilers, set the record with a three-yard catch on PITTSBURGH (API Charlie Joiner of the San Diego Chargers broke the National Football League's career receptions record Sunday by landing six passes in a 52-24 Chargers' loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

X-rays of his neck showed no broken bones, and officials believed he may have suffered a pinched nerve. Cincinnati 35, Atlanta 14 In Cincinnati, Turk Schonert threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Cris Col-linsworth on the game's fourth play, sparking a 21-point first-half scoring spree that carried the Cincinnati Bengals to a victory over the reeling Atlanta Falcons. Schonert, a backup quarterback making his second straight start for Injured veteran Ken Anderson, completed 11 of 12 tosses as the Bengals rolled to a 21-0 halftime lead, their most productive first half of the National Football league season. The Bengals cashed in on a fumble recovery for a 28-0 lead early in the third quarter, and Schonert hit Col-linsworth with a 20-yard TD pass late in the fourth quarter to deflate the Falcons' comeback attempt. McDonald completed 16 of 26 passes for 151 yards, including scoring passes of seven and 14 yards to Brian Brennan and 12 yards to Ozzie Newsome. The Steelers' early lead, helped by two of the Chargers' five turnovers, enabled them to withstand two San Diego touchdowns in a 90-second span and maintain their two-game lead in the AFC Central Division race. Stallworth, enjoying his best pro season at the age of 32, landed scoring catches of 30, 5 and 45 yards and now has 11 this season, the most of his 11-year NFL career. "One of my reasons for coming back this year was because people were saying my career was over.

"Mark had time to throw and the receivers made the big plays," Noll said. "When we have time to throw, we are able to do a lot of things." Stallworth had seven catches for 116 yards and Louis Lipps had seven receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown. And those are 14 reasons why it was anti-climactic by the time Chargers' wide receiver Charlie Joiner caught six second-half passes. Chargers, who had five turnovers.

"Every time we went on the field we felt we had to do something because of San Diego's offensive potential," Noll said. "Against the Chargers, we wanted to be aggressive and try to score. That's what we felt we had to do to win. We wanted to control the football with the run and the pass." That's exactly what they did. They were outpassed 391-243, but mainly because San Diego was forced to throw on nearly every down after quickly falling behind 24-3.
