THE STAR: Part 1 Friday, Feb. 8, 1952 Korean War Hero's Widow Receives DSC The last chapter in an heroic story of the Korean conflict was written recently when members of the John Mcllquham family of Thornton participated in ceremonies during the Distinguished Service Cross was awarded to the widow of their son, First Lieutenant Alfred K. Mcllquham, in Harrellsville, N.

C. Mrs. Grace Evans Mcllquham, widow of the Korean hero who died at his post under Communist fire, received the award from Major General William A. Beider- linden, deputy commander of the Third Army, who made a special trip to Harrellsville from Atlanta, to make the presentation. As parents and sisters stood at rigid attention during a recounting of the exploits of their son and brother, the two-star general turned to the widow and remarked, "It is a great honor for me to meet so great a wife and parents of so noble a soldier." Extraordinary Heroism A member of Company 29th Infantry regiment of the 24th Infantry division, Lt.

Mcllquham distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in a i against the enemy in the vicinity of Anui, Korea. On July 27, 1950, when Company was attacked by overwhelming Communist numbers, the lieutenant and his platoon remained in position to furnish covering fire for withdrawal of other troops. Moving about repeatedly to deploy and direct his men, the soldier was constantly exposed to enemy fire. When two of his men were wounded by machine gun fire, Lt. Mcllquham, single-handedly charged the machine gun nest, silenced the Communist guns, then carried the wounded men to a safer position.
