Quinn learned from a show writer that Rex had been in jail at one time, but that was all. Keeping the actor in the dark, if possible, is the norm on afternoon shows.

If Rex and Alex are foolers clad in varied stripes, so is actor Redeker. His dressing room borders on CBS stage 41, a cubbyhole barely long enough to contain a writing table. When Quinn isn't playing Rex on camera, he's at the table knocking out a screenplay; He's a writer with Academy Award credits, but he pays his bills by performing on soaps. For almost a decade on "Days of Our Lives," Redeker became Alex for a few moments, then could be heard typing away in his dressing room. "The last two years on the writers had nothing for Alex, maybe two lines a day.

Then I was free to write," Quinn explains. Redeker happens to be the original co-author, with his friend Lou Garfield, of the 1979 Oscar-winning picture "The Deerhunter." But producer Cimino used only Quinn's Quinn. "I only know I have to do it. Then the writer goes on camera and becomes a bum, but his fellow actors listen when he ad-libs. PLOT PORTENTS: Stephanie is pleased with the way daughter Kristin takes her bait, handsome Clarke, on "The Bold and the Beautiful." Rocco's flirtation with Donna seems to work, offering a new direction for the show.

Foiled again, Harper schemes to polish off Kayla once more on "Days of Our Lives." Roman leams about Justin's revenge plans for Stavros. Serena will use Diana to stop Roman. Andy may have a kidney tumor on "General Hospital." The Laverys hold their first Thanksgiving dinner. Autumn learns about her father going to jail. Scotty springs Bobbie from jail.

Ed swears he'll kill Herbert. Sophia learns about Gina blackmailing Pamela on "Santa Barbara. Eden begins to despair over Cruz winning a new trial. Keith is impressed by Dr. Clark, the newcomer.

Gina has doubts. The Faren-Evan fight over daughter Betsy heats up on "The Young and the Restless." Kay doesn't believe Rex, yet keeps him dangling. Victor is determined to win Ashley again. Even Jack fails to comfort Nikki. Travis admits his transgressions to Erica on "All My Children," but she says Jackson is to blame.

At Ross's trial, a mysterious witness comes to light. Matt hears one "Clif-F too many and walks. Silver seems to have a strange visitor. Clint learns that any little jolt could kill him on "One Life To Live. Mari Lynn finds new significance in Thanksgiving day.

Cassie discovers John's masquerade. Max offers to help with Al, for a reason. Patrick thrusts Cord into an explosive situation, but then finds out who gets to say, "Cheese!" Steve's condition vacillates on "Loving." Cecilia thinks Rick got canned because of her, while Gwyn finds him another job. Anne finds Gwyn in Harry's apartment again, and thinks the worst. Emily is in hot water on "Ryan's Hope." Evidence points to her, but the doorman may know something.

Frank and Pat are ecstatic about their success. "3 1 QUINN REDEKER Screenwriter actor Vietnam portion, along with his scary Russian roulette sequence, and the actor had to fight for that. The pleading paid off, and Redeker split the money with his wife Patricia, who had suggested the roulette idea. A few years ago, Redeker ran an industrial film company on the side, learning how to do things cheaply.

"It can be done," says Quinn. "Give me $500,000, 111 shoot my movie, take it to Cannes and I'm home free." Last year he shot a TV pilot and didn't like it, so he put it on hold. He did the same with a recent script. But in that "Restless" dressing room, Redeker plays what can be the most satisfying game in town when things go right. "Sometimes it Richard N.
