The Pirates started badly as Kenny Strayhorn fumbled on the first play from scrimmage at his own 22. The Indians recovered, but their offense could not move past the ECU five, and they settled for a 20 yard field goal.

After that, it was all East Carolina, though, it took the Pirates a while to get their offense going. The key move was the insertion of Grumpier, an all-league player last year who had spent much of the year on a i Stiayhorn. Midway through the second period, the Pirates swept 59 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with Grumpier carrying it In from nine yards out. The Pirates added a second touchdown just before the half after Jim Boulding returned a punt 31 yards to the Indian 24. Six plays later, Summerell 'passed to Mike Shea for the score.

East Carolina drove 53 yards In the third period to make it 21-3 with Crumpler plunging in from the one. The win gave East Carolina a 5-0 conference record, 7-2 overall. William Mary suffered its first conference loss and stands 3-1 in the and 6-3 overall. Guilford Dietzel Says State Loses Was Besf Ball Club By PAUL SHINN Associate Sports Editor COLUMBIA, B.C. At this point in the 1973 football season, coaches of losing teams are likely to turn to thoughts of "character," "pride," "bouncing back," and things like that.

Those were some of the things on the minds of South Carolina Coach Paul Dietzel Saturday night after his club had been soundly thrashed by N. C. State. But Dietzel, now in his eighth season at USC, got to the point when he said, "There was no doubt in the minds of those.who watched tonight's that State was the better team," The score reflected the truth of the a The execution of the plays did the Possibly, had the game gone on for another 60 minutes, the Wolt'pack could have doubled its 56 points. Well, that may not be exactly true.

Before State Coach Lou Holtz gets accused of running up the score on the Gamecocks to impress Bowl scouts, let him tell his side of it. "Our first-stringers came out with 13 minutes to go and never re-entered again," he said. "We played people at positions at this time who had never ever practiced. I'll never make that mistake agai.i. South Carolina is just a couple' of steps away from having a great football team." Both teams scored 21 points in the fourth quarter, but South Carolina was more than a step away from being great on this night that belonged to the Wolfpack.

Holtz could only add, "I thought we played very well. We fell down some on defense, giving up some long runs and long passes. We may have gone over board in trying to stop (Jeff) Grantz. "Still I thought we had too many penalties and gave up a few big plays. But it's good to win because it insures us of a.

winning season. Holtz said that he wasn't surprised that Grantz didn't start the game. He said that he figured that Grantz would get into the game some time any way. Grantz was pressed into action after starter Ron Bass was unable to move the club in two tries, while the Wolfpack quickly to two first period touchdowns. Holtz acknowledged that USC was battered and bruised from the game the week before against Louisiana State, the game the Gamecock almost won.

"We were fortunate to catch them at this time," Holtz said. "I saw them last week and I guarantee you that they are an excellent football team. At the same time I feel we are a i to a some progress at becoming a real good football team. We throw the ball better to to with our running." While State's passing game did open up as Holtz iiad promised a week ago in a win over Clemson, Dietzel was more awed by the running attack. "The thing they kill you with are those big running backs," he said.

"They're hard to handle. They run so well inside. They also have a line offensive line. "The big thing about State is that it is very hard to contain their offense. Overall their backfield is better than anyone else we have faced.

It's close between them and Houston, but I believe N. C. State has a edge." Dietzel said Grantz was far from full speed, but he played with a lot of leadership and effort. Mills: We Have Passed The Point Of Inspiration' By JIM PETTIT Enterprise Sports Writer CLEMSON, S.C. Wake Forest coach Chuck Mills believes in inspiration for football teams, but don't ask him to write a thesis on the subject just now.

Mills, half in and half out of the doorway to the Deacon dressing room after Wake's 35-8 loss to Clemson Saturday, could find very little -to inspire his team. "We're past the inspiration stage," Mills groaned. "When you lose seven straight you're past inspiration. The only thing to inspire us is the end of the season." Mills can be pardoned for his sarcasm. Littje the Deacons have tried has worked this season and Saturday's game was no exception.

Clemson handled the Deacons easily and had the game out of reach in the second period. The Tigers substituted heavily in the second half but were still going for touchdowns when the game on pass attempts. "I hope at the end of the game they got all the work they wanted on their passing game," Mills griped. It was a game of experimentation for the Deacons, several new players getting large amounts of playing time. "We played about a dozen freshmen," Mills noted.

"I noticed (John) Bryce did a goodsjj.ob at-middle guard for us, mit the others I didn't We'll know more when we see the films." about any bright spots the Deacons might have displayed Mills smiled weakly. "Hope springs eternal, but right now is a bad time to ask about any bright spots." Quarterback Kit Easier relieved Andy Carlton in second period in an effort to generate some offense. The Deacs moved the ball well at times under Basler's direction, couldn't punch one in. Carlton, returning to action after Easier, was shaken up in- the final period, directed the lone scoring march. By STEVE BECK Special To The Enterprise JEFFERSON CITY, Temu Carson Newman, ranked seventh in this week NAIA football poll, crushed visiting Guilford 34-0 Saturday night.

Vince Dial led the Eagle attack with 92 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns. Guilford took control of the game early in the first quarter, only to have a missed 28-yard i goal a Momentum then swung to Carson Newman as Dial and quarterback Tim Hartsoe pushed the ball close enough for two 27-yard David Ward field goals. Guilford's dynamic duo of fullback Mark Whitley and tailback Reggie Kenan was shut off by the inspired Eagle defense. The two only gained 50 yards rushing combined. i a beat two in the closing moments of the first half to haul in a 61-yard scoring pass from Hartsoe.

The 5'8" senior contused Quaker defenders by going in motion the only time in the game. The long scoring strike still had Carson Newman fired up as the Eagles scored on their first two possessions of the third quarter. Skip Johns scored on a five-yard run after a blocked Quaker punt, and Dial scored his second touchdown on an 11-yard run. Van Filligam added the final Carson Newman score on a two-yard run. The loss drops Guilford to 18, while the Eagles improve to 6-1.
