The Independent Record, Helena, 1983, when a grade-school teacher of Kirkpatrick's claimed to have spotted her in the Frontier Bar in Anchorage, Alaska. Hale left that morning for a test drive and was expected back for dinner after running a few errands. "He hasn't been seen or heard from since," said Sanders County sheriff's deputy Mark Denke. "He just kind of disappeared." Hale was last seen in Levis, a sweatshirt and work boots. He was a Vietnam veteran and said to be suffering from emotional problems. "Where did the pickup go? You can't hide those that easy," Denke said, assuming that, even if it were concealed somewhere in the area backcountry, a hunter, logger, hiker or berry picker would have probably happened upon it by now.

"We've just kind of run into a brick wall." "I'm really concerned," said Little, who added that he has reason to suspect foul play, though he wouldn't elaborate. Hale had left behind glasses, elatives and police thought Nancy Kirk-patrick had run away again when she disap peared April 21, 1976. But this time, the teen never resurfaced, leading authorities to suspect foul play. Kirkpa trick was from a broken home and was living with her grandmother in Columbia Falls at the time. She was a chronic runaway.

Authorities would track her down in places as far away as Los Angeles and Seattle, retrieve her, lock her up for a day (that was the norm -then) and let her go back to her grandmother's, from where she'd eventually take off, said White-fish Police Det. Dan Voelker. The last time she was released from Kirkpatrick custody in Kalispell to return to her grandmother's, she never arrived, he said. "We had no clues nothing," said Voelker, who inherited the case in 1980, when it was four years old. The trail was cold until May CO i LaJ JODY FERN HOWARD of Frazer Last seen: Oct.

Nelson Heart, special investigative officer with the Bureau of Indian Affairs on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, said he and other investigators have looked into reported sightings of Howard at various places in the area and in other states, but turned up nothing.

"We've just been looking all over," he said. Foul play is a possibility, he said, because she has money in a tribal account and "hasn't touched it." atricia Meehan disappeared after walking away from a head-on car collision on High way 200 seven miles southwest of Circle, and her family has never heard from her. Meehan, who had been living in Bozeman, was traveling north west on the highway when her car crossed the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle. She crawled out of the wreckage, looked blankly at the other driver involved in the accident, Meehan climbed over a fence beside the road and walked off across a field. A search turned up nothing. Her parents, of Pittsburgh, were convinced their daughter sustained amnesia and then hitchhiked aimlessly across the country with truck drivers.

Through photographs and videotapes, her family verified several sightings in the ensuring months in towns in Washington, Montana, South Dakota and Minnesota. Meehan's story has appeared twice on the TV show, "Unsolved Mysteries." And the Dawson County Search and Rescue team searched old coal mines around Circle after a Florida psychic said she believed Meehan's body could be found in a cave or mine in that area. Before her disappearance, Meehan had been doing odd jobs for her landlord and had been a iimni tnm I Pettinato help locate the teen, but to no avail. Police investigated past boyfriends and acquaintances, using lie-detector tests in some cases. "We did a lot of work on this case and could never even come 1 up with clue," he said.

Esther Pettinato, Robyn's mother, said nothing has hap-' pened in the 19 years since her daughter vanished to shed any light on the case. After so long with no leads, she said she can only assume the worst that she'll never see her daughter again. "You always keep hoping," she said. after all these years, you just kind of give up." Voelker recalled getting a call in the 1980s from investigators in Florida who said the Whitefish teen matched the profile of the victims of serial killer Ted Bundy, who was executed in Florida's electric chair in 1989. Voelker said his office never could document that Bundy was ever in Montana.

Shortly thereafter he told his boss at the telephone company that he had been stricken by a disease and had no reason to live. He said he was going to quit, sell his belongings and give the money to needy people for Thanksgiving, said Kalispell Police Det. Gene Holliday. Kimbrell asked his boss to mail his last Kimbrell paycheck to his mother, Venetta, in Kalispell.

"She did receive the check, but didn't hear from him," Holliday said. The last time Kimbrell was seen was Nov. 29, 1987, by friends in a bar in San Francisco, according to reports from the investigation. On Aug. 6, 1989, San Fransisco police impounded an abandoned vehicle registered in Kimbrell's name, but authorities found no sign of foul play or evidence that shed any light on the mystery.

His mother reported to authorities in August 1991 that she had received a call from a man claiming to be her son, but she didn't recognize the voice and dismissed the call as harassment.
