There best -known characteristic is their spotted hind quarters, since appaloosas may be from a number of crossbreeds. Because of the wide range of breeds that may be mixed together and still produce an appaloosa, the. size range of these horses is variable because of their mixed ancestry. 17-19. Most authorities agree the Arabian horse probably has had more influence on the bloodlines of every breed of light horse than any other breed. He was the basis of both the thoroughbred and the Spanish horse that later was bred with thoroughbreds to produce the quarter horse. The Arabian's blood is common also in many other breeds developed in the United States in the past two centuries, either through the thoroughbred lines or directly from Arabians. Initially, the breed was developed by the Bedouin tribes of the Arabic countries to be used as a war mare.

Stallions were considered inferior to the mares by the Bedouins and seldom used for battle. The characteristics of the Arabian developed by the Bedouins make him an ideal pleasure horse. In size, the Arabian ranges from 14.1 hands to a maximum of 15.1 hands and weighs from 9C0 to 1,000 pounds.
