Nov. 23. 1986. Murfreeiboro, News Journol 6B today lias Washington Redskins 'get' Da By DAVE GOLDBERG AP Football Writer As the clock mercifully wound down a few minutes before 1 a.m. Tuesday, the fans celebrating Washington's 14-6 victory over San Francisco began shouting, "We want Dallas!" game because we want to go back i there and It's a mirror matchup.

The Denver defense has allowed 285 yards a game; New York 28S.J, and the Broncos have 44 sacks to San Francisco, Kansas City at St. Louis, New Orleans at the Los Angeles Rams, and Pniladlephia at Seattle. The New York Jets are at Miami Monday night 1UI UIC UWUwi to'. touchdowns to Joe Montana and San Francisco Monday night. Washington's best defensive back, Darrell Green, may be out with i bruised shoulder, leaving Vernon Dean, rookie Tim Morrison and second-year pro Barry Wilburn on the corners.

But even a win won't solve everything for Dallas. "We've got to be considered a long shot," Coach Tom Landry said. "It wouldn't be so bad if we were chasing one team, but we've got two teams ahead of us. We'll need a few miracles to win it." Denver at New York Giants -2 fcr BE DRIVE A NEW It's known as "Dallas Week" in Washington. To the passionate Washington fandom, the New York Giants, with whom the Redskins share the NFC East lead at 9-2 are well, the New York Giants.

The Cowboys are the despised enemy, making this a game to savor the Redskins have a chance to knock Dallas out of the division race and cripple their playoff chances. While the Cowboys beat the Redskins 30-6 at Texas Stadium six weeks ago, they are just 7-4, two games out of first. Moreover, while the Redskins and Giants are close to clinching a wild-card berth, a fifth loss could be devastating to Dallas. "It feels good knowing we can knock them out of the division race if we win this game," Redskins linebacker Neal Olkewicz said. Tight end Don Warren said, "We don't like them and they don't like us.

A win Sunday would-be very sweet." The Cowboys figure to throw a lot today against a Washington defense that allowed 441 yards but no Denver returns to the scene of a 22-10 pounding by the Jets a month ago, in which quarterback John Elway suffered a concussion. That's a bad omen Denver's offensive line is banged up, and in the past three weeks the Giants have knocked out quarterbacks Danny White of Dallas, Ron Jaworski of Philadelphia and Tommy Kramer of Minnesota. "I think it would be more a revenge type of deal if we were playing the Jets again," Elway said. Now all this has ended. "Nick Gulas says we were the first to put the Lady Raiders on radio and now other stations are trying to jump on the bandwagon and get in on something successful that nobody wanted two years ago. Nick says, the team, school and everybody involved in the program knows who the, originators of the broadcasts are and what station was the first (WSVT) and no matter who, or if anybody broadcasts the games in the future, they are only imitators and not the originators," George Gulas says quoting his father.

"Nick also said that the new coach will have big shoes to fill and the program may never be the same without Coach Larry Inman. "All basketball programs wish they had someone like Nick Gulas to support their program like he did the Lady Raiders," says the younger Gulas. "He will be missed at MTSU and there will never be anybody to replace him, just like Coach Inman." Two years ago, the MTSU Lady Raiders were winning basketball games and the Ohio Valley Conference championship, but nobody knew what they were doing unless you read about them in the paper or went to the ga mes Wrestling promoter Nick Gulas and his. son George thought about the idea of putting the Lady Raider ballgames on radio. The cooperation of WSVT in Smyrna with station manager Jack Bursack, MTSU's Lady Raiders officially had their own radio station broadcast every home and away game starting the season of 1984-85.

George Gulas was given the title "Voice of the Lady Raiders" and kept that title until a couple of weeks ago when Coach Larry Joe Inman resigned the head coaching position. "Loyalty to Coach Inman means more to me," George Gulas explained, "than continuing with the Lady Raiders, who now have a new coach. Nick Gulas thinks the Lady Raiders will not be the same or the enthusiasm as high with Coach Inman gone. "Njck Gulas did more for the Lady Raiders than anybody has done in the past. He has donated money for the program, helped kips yon fa things right.

After voicing this sentiment to his captors, Sam Davis died by these words. As the inscription on his grave at his family home in Smyrna states, he laid down his life for his country. It was on a special mission as a Coleman Scout that 21 -year-old Davis was arrested by Union soldiers. In his possession were mcdrninating papers, describing the movement and position of Federal troops in the area.

So accurate were the plans that Davis was charged with being a spy as well as a carrier of information to persons in arms against the Government. Although Davis was repeatedly given-the opportunity to divulge the source of this information in exchange for his life and his freedom, he firmly refused and was hanged. The identity of his informant remains uncertain. He showed no bitterness toward (he authorities who imprisoned him, only kindness and courtesy. The rare courage and loyalty exhibited by Sam Davis under such dire circumstances make him one of the truest heroes of the Confederacy and of Tennessee.
