Washington dated Elizabeth Town eb 25 1779 SIR The enemy attempted a furprixe this morning They difembarked about three at which time Col Og den officer of the day obtained information and convey ed it to me Their landing was made on our left i as it appeared the moG unfufpefted part being a very difficult marfh Not knowing their deGgn or numbers after aiiem bling the troops I marched them to the rear of the town that they might not turn our left flank or gain our rear When daylight enfued we preffed upon the enemy who were then retiring to their boats In the purfuit a fewf them were killed and feme others fell into our hands During our abfence from the town they collefted a number of cattle and horfes which upon our advancing immediately fell into our hands They returned by the fame difficult and altnoft inacceflible marfh or fait meadow Colonels Dayton Ogden and Barber withfeleft anddif rerent detachments purfued them but the quicknefs of their embarkation added to the difficulty of the marfh i presented any other fuccefs than capturing one of their boats with the hands Our lofs I think does not amount to more than three four men Major Ogden who flrfl reconnoitered theenemy received a fudden wound by a bayonet but it is hoped not dangerous i The militia affembled on this occafion with the ut inoft alacrity 5 and Colonel Shrieve from Newark having early taken the
