12 to C4 -3 P P r &sovm$ Liz & Burton Torrid in 'Sandpiper Magic names, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton! The world's most exciting film couple are appearing at the Radio City Music Hall in "The Sandpiper," a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer drama of illicit love and its inevitable penalties. As Mr. and Mrs., Elizabeth and Richard take full advantage of the opportunity to scorch the screen with torrid lovemaking1, the first chance they've had to indulge in such cinematic intimacy. AS HISTORY'S MOST famous. or infamous, lovers, Antony and Cleopatra, they were not permitted by "Cleopatra" director Joseph L. Mankiewicz to gro into long:, amorous clinches. His rea son: to prevent snickering; by viewers seeing the lovers in amorous embraces. In "V. I. P's" Burton and Taylor were cast as a married couple and had no love scenes. Mis3 Taylor, ravishingly beautiful, is seen as a woman with her own code of morals, defying conventions and the first to reveal that she did not marry the father of her illegitimate son be- I y I. A V Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor cause she didn't love him; that she wanted the baby in spite of parental objections. Such a woman is Laura Reynolds and the star's portrayal of her is adeqjate, sometimes sensitive. BURTON" PORTRAYS Edward is committing but lacking the will power to end it before he gets irrevocably involved. Burton's performance is of his usual high quality, his expressive face and cultured voice adding up to perfection as he presents a realistic image of a supposedly holv man who becomes a liar, a Hewitt, a married man wno is trie , , , -v-- nnsesine thin highly respected head of a reli- woman witn whom he is complete-gious school for boys where ,v jnfatuated. Not quite. THERE IS SOME good drama in "The Sandpiper" and it's a pity that the further it goes th more sudsy it gets. Director Vincente Minnelli should have known better than to let it take on a soap opera aspect. He could have eliminated a lot of sentimental talk and beatnik participation in a story where it did not belong. Eva Marie Saint gives a valiant portrayal as Hewitt's trusting wife who reacts as most women would when she learns the truth from her husband. In supporting roles are Charles Bronson, Robert Webber, Tom Drake, James Edwards and Morgan Mason as Laura's son, Danny. THERE HAVE BEEN complaints about Miss Taylor's "The Sandpiper," a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Filmways release in Panavision and Met-rocolor. Produced by Martin Ransohoff and directed by Vincente Minnelli from a screenplay by Dalton Trumbo and Michael Wilson based on a story bv Ransohoff. Presented at Radio City Music Hall.
