20 (Reuters)- In one of the most thrilling finishes ever staged in a cricket test match, England today snatched a last -minute two-wicket victory against South Africa in the first test. South Africa has been dismissed in the second innings for 219. Battling in the fading light, England scored 128 at the rate of a run-a-minute for the loss of eight wickets. In the first innings England tallied 253 and South Africa 161. Wickets tunbled before the fast bowling of 19-year-old Cuan Mc-1 Carthy, playing in his first test.

Reid. DANIEL THOMA Word has been received of the accidental death on Sunday at Victoria, B.C., of Daniel Thoma, formerly of Morse Place, Winnipeg. Mr. Thoma had been a resident of Morse Place for over 40 years where he operated a dairy. He was very active in community affairs and was a member Fellows Lodge, Elmwood Branch.

He had resided in Winni50 years, moving to Victoria seven years ago. He is survived by his widow: a daughter, Mrs. H. Sky, B.C. WILLIAM G.

SHORT William George Short, 68, of Ste. B. Crescent Court, died Monday in Grace Hospital. Born in London, England he was a life member of the Imperial Veterans and had been with them since 1924. Mr.

Short served in the Boer War and the First World War. He is survived by widow, Alma Nellie; five sons, Wihiam Scarborough, England; Leonard England; Reginald, Lemington Spa, England; Frederick Victoria, B.C., Horace Winnipeg; five daughters, Mrs. J. Belleville, Mrs. D.

20, 1948 21 Smashing of Atoms Blinds Scientists NEWTON, Dec. 20 (AP)--Dr. Shields Warren, head of the Atomic Energy Commission's medical department, said Sunday several U.S. scientists are going blind as a result, apparently, of radiation from atom-smashing machines. Dr.

The Ukrainian Canadian Committee representing Canadian citizens of Ukrainian origin in Winnipeg, today wired a protest over Czechoslovakia's treatment of soldiers of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army Trygve secretary general tot the United Nations. The wire voiced protest against the treatment of the soldiers as common criminals. A despatch from Brataslava said the people's court had condemned to death by hanging four soldiers of the insurgent army. The committee appealed to the United Nations to take insurgent soldiers under protectorate of the U.N. and the International Red Cross and asked that the Czechoslovak government be persuaded to treat the soldiers as prisoners of war.
