7. Three Manitoba dancers have reached Broadway by the long, hard route of the slx a day in movie palaces and vaudeville houses, and countless engagements in supper clubs and dance halls all the way from Montreal to Rio. Now, in Eddie Cantor's hit musical Banjo Eyes they come on for only seven minutes a night, yet their act stands out as one of the brightest spots in a bright show that features such dancing nota bles as the De Marcos. They are known as the team of Lynn, Royee and Vanya, and their satire en ballroom dancing which open the second act Is an Ingenious humorous setting of the sort of thing the De Marcus have polished to perfection. Lynn and Royce are stage names for the brothers Frank and Dono van Simpson, who were born In College while "Vanya" Is Ella Rosenman, daughter of Mr.

and Mrs. S. Rosenman, of 255 Russell street. Miss Rosenman took up dancing under the tutelage of Miss M. Yeo mans of this city, and some time later Frank Simpson became a pupils.

They studied together under Miss Yoemans in 1927 28, with Don also becoming interested in adagio work. Later Frank Simpson started his own class here, and then went to Winnipeg to join a road show. The show folded up somewhere in the east, and Frank eventually landed in Montreal. There he started teaching again, and soon hud a large class. He then sent for his wife (Ella Rosenman) and with Don they conceived a dnnclng number that shortly earned them considerable Simpson, residing at 28th st.

and fame in Montreal night clubs. I Like The Movies By Ben Lepkin THE Man Who Came to Dinner is a hilarious comedy whose smart riinlncniA anrl eirnArt uptlnc ahnur 1uct hnw ennri Hnllvwnnrl ran he when it puts its mind to turning out sparkling adult entertainment. It The Man does not persuade those highbrows who scorn the pictures to change their mind, then nothing ever will. Monty Woolley In the title role Is perfect. He should be since he created the part on the stage and played it for years sitting around In his wheel chair polishing It up.

As Sheridan Whiteside, pampered writer and women's club lecturer on the finer things of life, Woolley is not only the lead Jt practically the entire show. So brightly does he shine that all other roles are minor even though they are played by such experts as Bett Davis, Ann Sheridan, BUlie Burke, Jimmy Durante and Reginald Gardner. The story is about Sheridan Whiteside who arrives In a small town to speak to the women's club. Invited to dinner at the home of one of the members, he slips as he Is entering the house and fractures his hip. Confined to a wheel chair, he takes over the house and starts running it and the lives of ts Inmates to suit himself.

He does his level best to mess up their lives as well as that of his secretary and almost succeeds. As the great man's secretary, Bette Davis is something of surprise playing her part with a reticence usually absent In the Davis eye rolling histrionics. Her quiet, restrained playing Is a pleasant change. Ann Sheridan afc a seductive actress is the most obvious type casting and very easy on the Billie Burke flutters in her best manner. Reginald Gardner in a lovely burlesque of Noel Coward Is very funny.

Jimmy Durante, rough, tough and loud, utters one of th? funniest lines since the movies began to talk. Richard a newcomer, Is effective enough. But really worth watching is tho actress who plays a somewhat fey maiden, lady with particularly shady past. Sundown is a melodrama about the men who guard the outposts of the British Empire. Set In British East Africa, it tells the story ot some men who learned of a plot by Britain's enomUs to stir up revolt among the tribesmen and in this way win over the country.

Th picture Is the story of the struggle between the two factions, of plot and eounter plot, of a tiny handful against preat'odds and victorious because they believt In their cause and are willing to dla for George Sanders and Bruce Cabot are the two Englishmen, tight lipped against all adversaries. Gene Tierney stalks Inscrutably through the film looking like an adolescent Hedy Lamarr, the white chief tainess of a native tribe who comes to the rescue of the wtilte The Red Army THOSE who have been thinking that the way the Russian armies have been chasing Hitler's troops all over the landscape was nothing more than a lucky fluke may change their minds when they te Red Army, an official Soviet picture of their forces action. Especially Interesting are shots of the famed ski and parachute troops. The ski troops, merging perfectly In their white suits with snow covered ground, give an Idea of how much havoc they must be playing with the Nazi retreat. The Russian air force and navy are shown and on tat screen at least seem as formidable as anybody else's.

But what makes this short different are the Russian songs given with tremendous gusto by massed choirs. When the Russians sings they like to throw their heads back, open their mouths, and let it come out. If it is their black bread ana borsht that gives them their vigour a good many singers we could think of eould do with a bit of the same diet. It Is the music that does much to distinguish Red Army from the routine short of Its kind. It pivos it an added Interest that makes it particularly worth seeing.

9tK WINNIPEG TRIBUNE TAGE If Brandon Trio Scores On Broadway Hartney, and raised in Bran don. Vanya is the stage name for the lady member Frank Simpson ran a school in competition with Miss Vanya, In Brandon. Later he went to Mon' treat, taught dancing there, and finally the two teamed up. In Montreal tney danced on every possible occasion. Later in Tor onto they taught tango and ta and continued to fill dancing en gagements.

'Meanwhile Donovan, whose In terests were academic, graduated from the University of Manitoba with a bachelor of science degree In biology, botany and geology. He could put this Knowledge to no lucrative use during the depression so he wound up by turning the dance duo Into a trio. Billed as Don, Donna and Don they danced through Canada and the United States with an ever Increasing reputation. In 1939, seeking more colorful names, they decided on Lynn, Royce and Vanya. Frank, a slender and wiry young man, works hard at his dancing and when he relaxes he likes to go in for aviation.

He has done some solo flying. Mitt Vanya, petite, with pointed features, lively eyes and brisk in speech, is also bound up with her stage work. When she's not dancing she Is an assiduous play goer. Donovan, round faced and jovial, says he has no hobby "except buy ing defense bonds." All three re visited their homes In Canada last December, Miss Vanya especially to see a brother who Is In the R.C.A.F. TRIO LEARNED ART IN BRANDON (Special to Tli Winnipeg Tribune BRANDON, Feb.

She was with Carols Lombard during most of her stay back there, and writes: "I was with Carole Lombard during most of her stay back there, and writes: "I was with Carole until 1 a.m. the morning she left, and we listened to the playback of her radio speech together. She was so pleased. It was unrehearsed and she hadn't known how it was going to turn out.

The people of the town art so grief stricken they feel as though a steam roller had gone over them. It all seems like such needless waste. And Indianapolis, because they asked her to come on, feels guilty." And speaking of Carole reminds me of Hedda Hopper ttoriei going on about Clark, who, without a doubt, has the sympathy of every living being. Some say he'll never do another picture, that he'll retire from the screen. It's all pure conjecture.

Nobody knows what Clark will do, not even Clark. But a can tell you this from one who's worked all her life: the only salvation for sorrow Is work. It makes you forget your own troubles. And Clark's a worker always has been, always will be. I wouldn't be surprised to have him turn up any day at Metro, and say, 'Come on.

boys' let's finish the picture," and when it's through, ask for three or four months off, get together a bunch of his friends, some fine sketchps, and tour the army ramps and entertain the boys. Giving joy to others make you forget yourself. But whatever he does will be all right with the American people. Because there Is a swell guy. If It's the aim of K.

T. Slovens to he an actress, she'd better stop such tnctlrs as petting off the train with Alfred Vanderbllt and refus ing to be photographed. Reason Claudette Colbert will take that Sun Valley vacation alone Is that her husband has to here for his duties with the Navy. Nothing else. Local Girl Stars In British Comedy Sailors Three, starring Tommy Trlnder and Carla Lehmann, a former Winnipeg girl, is a British comedy which should prove very' popular with followers of the all out, slap stick humor which George Formby has made famous on this side of the water.

I Three sailors on leave In South America meet an English gover i ness, Carla Lehmann. After a series of comical flirtations they miss their ship and board a German cruiser by mistake. They are put In irons but finally manage to take command of the cruiser. They do this In a way so Improbable that it becomes hilarious at times. They bring the German ship and Its crew safely into the hand of their commander and are decorated for their heroism.

This fanciful plot is played with a great deal of gusto by all concerned. E.CM. RIDE WITH ALL PASSENGERS INSURED A Notice To Parents The Manitoba Censor Board classifies all moving picture films as ADULT or GENERAL. "ADULT means NOT SUITABLE FOR. JUVENILE ENTERTAINMENT.
