Saturday, on his return from an extengive tour of Manitoba addressing secondary schools, under the all spices of the National Council of Education. Mr.

Paton, after a distinguished AS an educationist in Engcareer land, during which he was master at Rugby and lecturer at Cambridge, has accepted recently the position of principal of the junior college at John's, Newfoundland, the first effort of the crown colony establish a state university and keep its many successful students at home. Mr. Paton's itinerary was arranged Hon. Charles Cannon, minister by of education, and on several occasions the minister accompanied him. He addressed secondary students at Atrathclair Neepawa, and Minnediota, Newdale, students from surrounding districts coming in to hear him.

"I was impressed with the strikIng evidence of the interest in secondary education," Mr. Paton said. He congratulated the authorities and other persons co-operating in providing means for attaining higher education in the province. JOSEPH SHAW, PIONEER, DIES Came to Winnipeg in 1881- Funeral Will be Held Tuesday Morning Joseph Shaw, aged 78 years, 864 Stella. died Sunday at St.

Joseph's Hospital after a short ness. Shaw was one of the West's earliest, pioneers, having resided in Winnipeg since 1881. He was born at Bolton, Lancashire. England, October 7, 147 and came to Canada in 1868. He was employed for 13 years by the G.

S. Railway, before he came to Winnipeg in the spring of 1881. Until 1921, when he retired from active life, Mr. Shaw was employed at the Weston Shops of Canadian Pacific Railway, where he worked for a period of 381 years. At his death, Mr.

Shaw was the oldest living member of the culate Conception parish, having been congected with it since its Inception. He is survivad besides his widow. by three sons and three daughters. The sons are Joseph Shaw, Charles, Edward Shaw. of Winnipeg, and William Shaw, of New York City.

The daughters are Mrs. T. F. Kelly, Mra. James M.

Kelly and Ellen V. Shaw. Besides his sons and daugh ters there are also 19 grandchildren and two great grandchildren living. The funeral will take place 3.30 o'clock morning fro Immaculate Conception Church, St. Mary's Cemetery.
