of The Independent Record, Helena, Mont. Thursday, June 25, 1953 rage Three Benson Going To Drought Area of Texas Dallas (P)-Agriculture SecreEzra Taft Benson heads for Texas Friday-into a rising clamor for help by farmers and ranchers suffering the most punishing drouth in southwest history. Benson will attend the American Cotton congress in Lubbock. He has said he wants a firsthand look at drouth conditions. Farmers and stockmen whose losses have pyramided into the millions promise he'll get it.

County drouth committees are to meet with Benson Saturday. The southwest's soil conservation chief Wednesday called the drouth in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana "the longest and most severe and widespread in history." Regional SOS Director Louis Merrill said the drouth is eclipsing the storied spells of 1886, 1909, 1917-18 and 1934-36. Crops are scorched. Deep cracks are spreading through seared and barren rangelands. Cattle are starving.

Merrill said virtually the entire Texas landscape "is browned and bleak." "Pastures are completely burned up all over the state and the north Texas corn crop is in danger of being completely destroyed," he said. In one particularly severe "dust bowl" area- -three million acres between Lubbock and Big Springgraders are working daily to keep roads clear of shifting sand, Merrill related. L. J. Cappleman, state farmers' home administration director, said cotton "just didn't come up" in the area west of Wichita Falls.

He reported the north Texas plains wheat crop is "virtually a complete failure." Merrill added that "except for small areas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana just as dry." Heat records broken almost are daily. Wednesday's 108 at Amarillo topped the all-time mark there of 1069 on June 15, 1939. At Presidio, in southwest Texas, it reached 113. In recent days there bave been at least two heat deaths. Water is rationed in several Texas cities.

There has been no substantial rainfall in weeks--and none is in Immediate prospect. Refuge Captain Said In Bad Books of His Red Government London- (AP) -An exiled Pole said Thursday that Capt. Jan Cwikyinski fled the Polish liner Batory and asked political asylum in Britain because previous desertions by his crewmen in western ports 1 had put him in the bad books of Poland's Communist government.

This source said Cwiklinski, the Batory's skipper, probably had, to act when he did even though his wife and two children are believed to be still in Gydnia, Poland -because the ship's medical officer jumped ship here eight days ago and "after that, it would have been impossible for the master to have returned to Poland." Andrez Mielec, a former officer in the Free Polish army now employed by an engineering firm in Newcastle, gave this version to newsmen as the 3-year-old Swiklinski was held in London's Brixton prison pending a decision on his plea for asylum as a political refugee.
