Sloan was born in Pittsburgh, was named to one of Fielding Yost's all-American football teams before graduation from Ohio Wes-leyan in 1900.

Ho was named to the 1900 American Olympic team in the shotput and javelin, and during his athletic career held several world swimming championships. Howiand is playing in Class 'A' for the first time and was not expected to offer any great obstacle to Massillon.
