iiiitiiiiiittiiiiiitiiiitiiimitiiiiiitiitiiiiniiiiitiiniiitu CHANGE OF Dy Dill IJUtJri, Jr. iiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiitmiiiiiiiiniitiii'iiiifi Those close to new champion George Foreman will admit in private that they are willing to wait for at least a year before putting their man in against Muhammad Ali. In that year they feel the ex champion will have reached the stage in his career where he will be ready for the chopping block. A black college assistant coach at a major white white university has the South Carolina state football coaching Job all wrapped up if he decides to make a move, The betting here is that he'll take the job. Tennessee state head football coach John Mcrritt was a big success at that super football coaching clinic held in Pittsburgh last year.

But the man who drew a lot of raves was Merritt's defensive coach, Joe Gilliam, who also participated in the program. St. Louis pitching star Bob Gibson feels he will again get over the 20 victory mark in 1973. Gibson missed the magic figure by one game last year and is anxious to reach the 250 plateau in victories (he has 228 major league wins) this season. If he reaches that mark Gibson figures he may still have time to win 300 games before ending his major league career.

Franco Harris, NLF rookie of the year with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, isn't planning on being a flop in his sophomore year. Harris has sent word to his attorney that he'll accept no public engagements after May 15. From that moment on the brilliant running back will be in training preparing for another football season Many sports figures around the country are pulling for Earl Banks, Morgan state grid coach, to be named athletic director at the school. Certainly in recent years no man has done more to bring Morgan back into sports prominence than Banks. They couldn't have picked a better honoree as Baseball Mother of the Year than when the Youngstown, Ohio Heart Fund named Mrs.

Era Allen, mother of Richie, as their selectee recently. Not only did Mrs. Allen raise a group of outstanding athletes (three played in the majors) she encouraged them every step of the way The Boston Celtics just laugh when those rumors about them trading Jo Jo White crop up. "In this league you don't trade players like White," says Boston Coach Tommy Heinsohn. It seems as though we've heard that song before.

Wali Jones, who is out in the cold after being put on waivers by the Milwaukee Bucks, must be seething these days. Jones was in the second year of a four year, no cut, no trade contract that called for him to be paid between $90,000 and $100,000 a year. With that kind of salary no one wants to touch him. And can you blame a team for turning in the other direction before paying a possible bench sitter that kind of dough One of the unhappiest players in the NBA this season must be Butch Beard, the guy who went from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Seattle Sonics in exchange for Lenny Wilkeris. Wilkens, who formerly coached the Sonics, was not only the team's big star, he was a hero in the town.

Beard, picked as the man to make the fans forget, hasn't come close. There are times when he even sits out entire games now and a lot of folks around Seattle are still grumbling over the trade. Don't be surprised if Al Attles who coaches the Golden State Warriors doesn't walk off with Coach of the Year honors in the NBA this season. Attles, a former star performer at North Carolina continues to draw raves for the job he is doing with the Warriors (I 0 FORTY ItHNTS FOR COGDKM All CIAA candidate Alton Cogdel scored a season high of 10 IMtints against F.liabeth City recently. The Bronco forward is averaging over 20 prints a game for Fuvclteville state university who are 13 6 overall and in the CIAA.

The Codgell brothers. Devastating cage FAVETTEVILLE Swish! Swish! Swish! Is it Alton Cogdell? Is it Larry Cogdell? These two players are presently bringing a lot of "oohs" and "aahs" from Bronco followers around the CIAA with their spectacular plays and play making. Coach Thomas Reeves, skipper of the talent laden Fayetteville state university Bronco basketball squad has a brother combination this year which is oving to be a devastating force on the hardwood. Everyone in the CIAA is quite familiar with number twenty one of the Reeves men. He is All CIAA candidate Alton Cogdell, a sure handed shooter rebounder, and catlike ball handler, who is averaging 22.5 points a game and 9.6 rebound per contest.

However, another Cogdell, Larry to be exact, has emerged on the Bronco cage scene which is giving Reeves double dynamite material on the hardwood. Alton, the younger brother, plays forward while his big brother, Larry, holds down the pivot sspot. Larry, a 6 6 220 pounder who wears number 51 for the Bronco men, started playing in the second semester at FSU and has been nothing short of sensational. In nine games for the Reeves men, Larry Cogdell has poured in a total of 82 points and grabbed 72 big rebounds. At this point, older brother Larry is averaging eight rebounds a game and has a 9.1 scoring average. Little brother Alton is not doing too bad either. In a super individual effort against Elizabeth City state university, Alton tossed in a season high of 40 points while pulling down 19 rebounds. duo In 19 games for the Broncos this campaign, Alton has .722 field goal percentage mark.

The classy 6 4, 190 pound forward has pulled down 183 rebounds, bucketed 429 points for a 22.5 game average. Alton was also been selected as the "Player of the Week" in District 29 of the NAIA during December. Presently coach Thomas Reeves is seeking his second straight berth in the CIAA with 13 6 overall mark. His CIAA record is 8 3. Last year, the Broncos were runner us at the CIAA Tourney and Reeves was selected "CIAA Tourney Coach of the Hampton out home court HAMPTON INSTITUTE, Hampton, Va.

The Hampton Institute Pirates, can count on setting at least one record this season by being, "the only basketball team I've ever heard of that doesn't have a home court," according to Athletic Director Dr. Herman N. Neilson. The team holds another record by being the first one in five years that has a chance of competing in the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic assn. tournament.

The college's gymnasium has been unusable since the flood hit the city in September. The team was left with no home court, a factor "worth 10 points in a game," according to Neilson. The team had to adjust to several courts, which coach Louis Shackelford says, "has definitely been a deterrent to their top performance." Shackelford explains that players become accustomed to the proximity of the crowd in their home gym. and that they use various fixtures as reference points in making Iree throws and in shooting for baskets. The Pirates practice at Langley Air Force Base gym, at Hampton High School, on the better half of the damaged floor at Hampton Institute and, sometimes, even outdoors on a playground court.

Their home games have been scheduled at Hampton high school and the Hampton Roads Coliseum. Team members have, however, overcome the inconveniences and drawbacks of required mobility and are "emerging as a new power," in the CIAA, says Samuel E. Massenberg, chairman of the Committee on Athletics. The Pirates rank in the top four of the northern conference division, being tied for second place with Virginia Union University and Virginia State College. Should it hold its place in the division, it will be the first HI team since 1967 to compete in the CIAA tournament, scheduled to take place Feb.
